The twin turbo is a very tight fit. I'm not sure about the clearance for the steering, but it just barely fits between the shock towers. If it does interfere with the stock steering, you may have to make extensive changes to the steering shafts like I did. Not only did i move the shaft, but i moved it further outboard. This forced me to cut 1" out of my frame rails. and re boxed it in. Not to mention more reinforcing added in the wheel well area to compensate. More structural steel was also added under the frame rail. When this happened, it also interfered with the bracing that holds the compression rod. The actual mounting point was not moved, but the extra bracing around that mount was cut away, and redesigned. It is such a critical area, and I took no chances on safety. I never would have even done this had I not had a full cage that mounted to brace the compression rod..(from the main hoop down to the lower floor/firewall..then continued out behind the front wheel. Plus my extra tower bracing. I believe I don't need the cage to hold the car together, and that my steering mods, and my frame rail mods are strong enough on their own...but I feel that it is just that much stronger with it...especially with triple the horsepower trying to twist my car in two!

Hey Guys, I have my own avatar I'd like to upload, I have no problems getting it under 6k..prob is I can't seem to shrink the pixel size smaller than 120x80 or so.. Anyone have a program that can shrink better?.. I'm using my camera software to get me part there, and microsoft paint the rest of the way, but I just won't let me shrink it small enough. I'm still gonna play with it, and Maybe i'll do something else for an avatar... maybe something with microsoft paint...not sure.. I like the site so far!

I remember doing the same test, (just not using the same example.) Makes me think back to the brutal job interview processes I had to endure.... I'll draw you guys a pic of my job interview process... here goes.. First..I was already a temp for this large chemical mfg corp. I was doing the job for 1 year, and Had 3 summers of previous experience in the exact same job as a summer student putting myself through college. They decided to hire 4 people in a plant of 400. There were approx 60 temps on site..some working as long as 5 years. 600 outside people applied as well. I applied for one of the 4 full time jobs..(my own job to be exact) was one of the 4. I started by going off site on my days off to a specified location. (local highschool gym) There within an alloted appointment, applicants took a 45min written test followed by a 1/2 hour interview by 2 supervisors (supervisors that report to the plant manager no less...) After this selection process (2weeks. they narrow the 600+ to 120people. They have two sessions now.. 60 to a group and we meet at a site that has convention/meeting facilities. This interview was a full 8hrs!!! with 2 10min breaks, and a 25min lunch (provided by the company) This group of 60 is sat in a room with tables of 6. We go back and forth between 45min-2hr written exams 3 in total, and group projects, which were monitored by at least 4 supervisors. We were given problems like above, and we had to solve them as a team within a certain length of time...everyone in the group was competing for the same jobs!.. each wanted the other to drop dead, but still had to work as a team. That day was killer, as you were being judged by many people all the time, on how you interacted, who lead the groups, who slacked off, who followed, did we get the correct answer, and how did we work as a team to get the answer... After this, it was knocked down to 20. 2weeks again passed... Then I get called in for a final 2hr interview... 5 one 1... all top supervisors, who grilled me my on best/worst experiences, and what did I learn/what would I do differently etc.. how would I react to certain situations, where I wanted to go in the company etc... I made it through all of them successfully. Oh and this was for an entry level mfg job. And you should have seen what I went through to move into my current position in which I interact directly..onsite with our customers as a Technical Service Representative.

I win! Just worked it out. I'm paying .92 cents per litre here in the suburbs of Toronto..To the US crowd, that works out to paying $3.48 per US gallon for premium fuel. Not always great to win..

New Rims..dove head first off cliff
ZR8ED replied to ZR8ED's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Welcome to the cliff Big Phil!! anyone else wanna join us? You must be crazy! you already had wicked looking rims on the car. Slownrusty: Yep thats exactly where the shop is.. west side of street two lights past Elgin Mills. I'm pretty stoked about the whole deal! -
Ever heard of the X10 cam that you see advertised on the web?.. well I bought one... Works pretty good to!! Anyways, I found that it runs on 12volt, and I was able to wire it to me inputs on my camcorder (RCA type), and wired on a cig lighter adapter on the camera, and wala! I have a very small camera with full colour and sound with 25ft of cable!!! My buddies and I are going to mount it on my airdam, and maybe out behind the car, and do some trick shots on the racetrack etc. Wouldn't be too hard to mount it to the rear control arms.. just like in the Nascar!.. small enough (golfball size) to hold in your hand, and put on on the dash to do driver shots etc... a camera like this would work perfect for this kind of stuff.. only $80, and keeps your camcorder safe in the car.

Hey Scott, not you Scott, the other Scott, Its me Scott! Scotty miz You are not off base here at all. notice that older fullsize stationwagons and some mini vans have the spoiler on the top of the roof, pointing down. They do it to keep the back windows cleaner, by forcing air down the window to cancel the vortex created by the original aerodynamics of the vehicle. Form over function..its a catch 22, we want better looks, so we mod the cars rear/exhaust etc... when in effect we are making it worse. So now what.. no one is going to remove their msa body kits, rear wings, or like me expensive performance mufflers. So I guess the challange is to retro fit our cars with something/things, that can help us rid our fumey cars while maintaining our cars looks.. Definately some good ideas are coming out of this. People who are starting to mod their cars should look at this post, and US..well.. we are going to have to work at this a bit. I've been talking with some of my local Z buddies who are suffering as well, and we are thinking of trying some experiments to help ourselves out....though we are about 2-3 months away from our cars coming out... Cardboard is a wonderful material for mocking up wings etc... As far as the yarn on the back of our cars, someone here posted they did this and noticed that many across the middle of the rear of the car (licence plate area) the strings just hung limp at 70mph!.. definately a dead zone there. Sitting here typing and another idea hit me... ever see the belly pans that stick out front under the air dams on race cars?.. kinda stick out a couple of inches parallel with the ground....this helps seperate the air above and below the car before it gets to the car.. Hmm.. they do the same out back...maybe some kind of ground effect with a smooth bottom for the lower rear 1/4 panels of the car. This could help keep the air at the ground level moving faster...thus helping draw the stagnent air behind the car away... not nessesarily a rear belly pan..just on the sides...some of the msa rear bumper kits could be fitted with some aluminum sheeting under them to smooth the air out... I'm just tossing more ideas out guys, maybe one will spark an idea with one of you. This is the way of the inventor...hehe Good discussion going on here!!

New Rims..dove head first off cliff
ZR8ED replied to ZR8ED's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Slownrusty: The shop was called "Wheel and tire zone" Guy who was managing it said he ran "Tire mag" for 10 years before that, and knew Greg Whitehead for a long time. Anyways, they are on 11300 Younge st. in Richmond Hill. Next door to several car dealerships. Hmm Wheels direct? I've heard the name, but don't know about them or anyone who has dealt with them. Figures eh?.. getting advice about local rim shops from a guy 4300miles away.. Thanks for the tip though! -
http://www.hybridz.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=13;t=000358 Just wanted to link this to the "Coefficient of drag for 240Z" thread since the two topics are kinda crossing over here.

New Rims..dove head first off cliff
ZR8ED replied to ZR8ED's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Oh I'm pretty sure they will fit just fine under my rear flares. My 265's have more than 3" of clearance as it is... ON3GO..My tires have less than 500miles on them. I'm looking in the neighbourhood of $1000.00 USD for my rims/tires -
O the joys of I/C plumbing.. just wait till you get it all done, then spend the summer tweeking it when a pipe keeps blowing off!! I wanted to shoot my car after a while of fighting i/c pipes blowing off under boost... A tweek here, a tweek there...22 more tweeks..WAAHLAAA!! working i/c pipes! Ah... I love my car again! Enjoy!

Well I checked out the local (1hr away) shop that does custom wheels. I trekked out to north Toronto (Richmond Hill) and checked out their shop and sized up their operation and their people. I talked to them about their experience with Z's, and whether or not they personally like them..(I am extremely picky when it comes to my Z money) I spent an hour with the manager, and I think I can trust them. I was looking at all kinds of different options/prices. Well I kinda took a freaking dive off a cliff, and decided (4-6weeks delivery time) is just about the time I'll be prepping the Z to come out of hibernation. I ended up going with a Simmons wheel. 17x11 with -36mm offset, and a 17x8 front with zero offset. And a matching set of Yokohama AVS 315/35/17 and 235/40/17. here is a pic of the wheels.. just try and image them dished another 4 inches or more. And yes they were not cheap, if your curious, and have a strong stomach.. Steep $ though.. (crappy Canadian $) $5200.00 Installed. wheels/tires. On a lighter note. My Epsilon 3 Piece wheels 16x9 and 16x7 mesh style with 225/50/16 BFG KDW's and Kumo victoracer 700's 265/45/16's will be for sale shortly after my rims are installed. Here is a pic of them. I know its mainly a pic of my engine, but it shows the front rims in decent detail.

Here I sit working..er..uhmm yea.. skip it.. They should apply there for work.. think of the savings in traveling to work back and forth.. uhmm yea.. real nice of me eh? I'm desensitized to it all.. Toronto is full of young street people... makes me angry... I wonder where that pic was taken?... Tim Hortons.. if it is in the US It could be in one of a few locations... If it is in Canada...heck..I can think of 12 Tim Hortons with in a 4 mile radius of where I live... I won't even get into how many "Country Style", "Coffee Time" let alone all the mom and pop places.... I think we could give Seatle a heck of a run for coffes shops per capita.

Ok so I can't shut my mouth. My brain won't stop working ok? Speaking of the BMW spoiler brought to mind the later model 300zx's 87-89 had a third brake light mounted on the top of the hatch..and it was almost 2" deep, and left a 1.25" vertical drop to the glass. I wonder if that made a difference in handling?.. or was it just their for safety?..Nissan did some unusual things to make mods to their race cars legal. Ie "Gnose", "ZXR" wings etc... I also wonder if it would fit our 1st gens?.. hmm I'll have to look into this further....I recal mine was screwed to the hatch some way.. it just might be removeable.. (maybe for bulb access?) Ok ok..like a fat kid playing dodge ball...I'm out!
-
Ya know.. you could paint the aluminum body coloured to kinda hide it, or... or you could make it from Lexan...hmm kinda high tech looking. I made a flat wing from lexan years ago on my Z, and left it clear. looked kinda neat. I'm kinda picturing this in my head...growing on me a bit, as long as its not too extreme looking. Chrome it... hmm my personal fav.. stainless steel (insert mental image of Homer Simpson drooling) Ok I'll shut up.

Doug. The wing over the rear wheels would not neccessarily be more effective.. the wing over the rearmost part of the car will act like a lever, and the wheel will act like fulcrum. Any gains in downforce would be multiplied over the distance from the wing to the wheels (fulcrum) But the idea of the "supra style" wing may not add downforce, but may reduce "lift". My Q stands though.. anyone with a fume ridden car want to try this experiement..I'm not sure I can wait till spring to find out.

While your at it project Z
ZR8ED replied to Georgia Flash's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
At least your here among friends.. hmm "Zedaholics anonymous" (sp?) As long as you have $ and your Z, you can't be cured. my "while its apart" stories are many..all with happy endings..some needed lots of blood/force/willpower/spite/ego, and yes lots "O" $$$$ When I first got this disease, I used to think others like me were nuts.. Now I've joined the ranks of "nutdome".. maybe even a little nuttier.. -
As many of you know, I'm going to order a set of custom 17's to fill my rear fenders properly. I had my rims all picked out, and had done research on who could do custom ordered rims, and finally settled with Compomotive USA. I started by filling out an info request form for their rims (on the website). It said to wait max 1 week for a response. After 2 weeks, I did the form again... still no response. I then emailed the webmaster on the lack of any response to my web requests... 2 more weeks.. nothing. Yea I can call. (long distance of course), but this is no longer the point. 3 requests for ordering info... no response...Is that a way to deal with a customer, who may spend thousands of $$? too shakey for me.. and with them being so far away, and in another country does not make this one bit easier. I'm not really hear to rant and rave about their business, I'm in the marketing business myself, and I'm very critical of customer care. Anyways this is just a heads up if you are considering ordering custom rims long distance..becareful. I called Simmons wheels personally, and they gave me a # of a dealer local to me who can handle my requirements, even if I don't choose Simmons (these guys do custom ordering/modifying of custom rims from various mfg. They are located within 60km of me, and I plan on visiting their location on Saturday... they even told me of a Z in their shop who is fitting 17x12.5's for his 240 before he ships it to Germany for a race at Neurburgh.(sp?) Now thats service! beyond my expectations.

I did find 2 firewall leaks.. for harnesses passing through the firewall.. I've since plugged them with sealer.. not sure on the effects though, as I did them in the fall, and it was too cold to drive with my windows down. It is a good thing to look at though.. everyone looks at the back of the cabin.. And to who ever mentioned "carbs" not FI add to this problem.. I have a FI car..

I was afraid to even look at this post.. as soon as my car even thinks about me thinking of rust it start to rust on me.. Yep Charlie is the man!

Hey guys. While reading a post in this same forum about "whats the 240's drag coefficient". I read an interesting article reagarding this issue, and touches on the rear slope of our cars causing lift.. Ok now... remember the 82-85 Toyota Supras? with that wing near the top of the hatch? (actually designed as a sunshade for rear passengers) A spoiler of that type might disrupt the flow of air over the roof of the car..maybe this might help that dead area behind the z.. might help with fumes getting in... (I know they didn't do it stock, but I'm getting tired of smelling fumes when my window is down, have made a ton of fixes and I'm grasping at straws now..) Anyways someone who's z is not in winter storage could try this.. I was thinking of how to experiment with this without making permenant holes etc.. on our cars to test a wing... Then it hit me. Imagine a wing like that on the back of Blue Ovalz car.. angled and essentially a flat sheet (I'm simplifing this a bit) You could make this from aluminum, and bend a lip in it that could be tucked between the hatch seals and close the hatch on it to hold it in place... (hmm didn't some of the cars in mad max had a rear roof spoiler kinda like this ?) You could then drive the car and (hope it doesn't fall out and scratch the car) and see if it reduces the exhuast fumes... technically it should kill a lot of rear lift according to the article... it might not have to be all that tall to disrupt the air...1-2" high? I'm just sitting here thinking this stuff up...its been a long winter so far.. Anyone have any thoughts on this.. Anyone with a not painted car want to try this?.. (incase it fell out) Anyone have a fume ridden cabin desperate enough to try this? I'm going to file this till spring...I'm crazy enough to try just about anything at this point..
-
I just read that article, and thought it was excellent reading. It makes me wonder about the effectiveness of those toyota supra inspired hatch spoiler (up near the roof... Thoough on the Supra (82-85) they were designed as a sunshade because the rear passengers heads are under the rear hatch glass. I wonder if that type of spoiler.. maybe not that particular one.. but something installed in nearly the same location would really benifit out cars... This kinda goes back to the hightech forum where I started a thread about bellpans.. etc.. to reduce exhaust fumes entering the car.. Hmm I think you could easily test this theory on our cars without drilling holes or making permanent alterations...hmmm If you bent a piece of aluminum into a shape similar to that of one of the many variations of aftermarket/nismo rear wings.. but left a lip that could be tucked into the hatch/seal.. close the hatch and wedge in this aluminum wing...kinda hard to describe, but you could disrupt the flow of air enough for testing..... I think I'll add this over in the other thread as well.. maybe someone with a z (not in winter storage) could try this... Sorry to highjack the topic...

Got Plywood? The drag # sounds about right... I also recall hearing a VW microbus is only .48, and a 4x8 sheet of plywood is .50!!! Our cars suck for areodynamics.. weird since the car has such awsome lines and agressive stance. go figure.

I have lots of pics at zdriver.com. in the rides section.... last page I think.. (alphabetical..ZR8ED).. hehehe figures. Hmm I have a link to more pics and a 3min video at the sony imagestation site...I've posted the link here, and zcar.com a few times now.. though I'm at work and don't have a link handy for you.
