Toyota caliper swap clearence issues...
ZR8ED replied to ToplessZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Well.. first thing.. what Toyota calipers? I am running the large 4 pistons from a 88+ 4Runner with 300zx rotors. They have clearance issues.. they stick out just over a 1/4" more than stock calipers.. Depending on the style of your rim.. you may have problems.. The problem is at the centre of the rim.. if it has a bit of a "hat" mounting point like the 280zx 6 star rims.. then you may be ok.. I have the BBS styled mesh rims.. they are pretty flat accross the back.. I needed 1/4 inch spacers to clear my rims.. BTW they were 16x7's. -
After further testing with the cars handling, and letting some pro drivers behind the wheel of the car, There is a conclusion that my rear shocks are not strong enough. They are only a couple of years old and are in good shape.. they just can't control my upgraded rear springs. Anyways, there are Tokico Illuminas. I need something stiffer.. maybe adjustables? The front seems to be ok.. it was too loose before, but with the better weight distribution of the driveline, the front end is now just right.. I had to stiffen the rear springs after the conversion, as the torque from the engine would bottom out my old springs. hehehe Any ideas for a stiffer shock in the back? Thanks.

I just received my new boost controller. I was going to order a TurboXs model, but ended up ordering a Turbosmart boost controller.. (the parent company of TurboXs) Made in Aus. Looks like a very nice piece of equipment looks like a high quality unit. I'll keep you posted on how it works out. $89.00 Cdn. + shipping and tax.

Hey guys. I think I've found some rims that I like, and a company that does custom rims. The site was suggested to my by someone here on this board. Compomotive wheels. Has anyone actually dealt with these guys? are they good guys to deal with? I've heard of their rims and I know their quality is pretty good.. just looking for good customer service, as I will need these shipped sight unseen. Here are the rims I'm looking at. http://www.usacomp.com/ts.htm Looking for a 17x11 back 17x8 front. I haven't sorted out the offset needed yet.. just looking for suppliers that can meet my needs. 315/35/17's (viper size) hehehe ought to look beefy enough under my car. gonna have some wicked deep dish though... only going to have 3.5" back space I think.. (I don't have coilovers... It is going to be a super bitch figuring this all out, and where I want the outside edge of my wheel/tire to be...soooo much room under those flares... might order them to be ready for next season.

I carry a shallow tool box 3" deep max. Long enough to carry a 1/2 drive torque wrench for properly tightening lug nuts. I also carry the most common metric sockets for the car, open ended wrenches 10, 12, 13, 14 large flat screw driver, philips head, spare wire, spare aligator jumpers, electric tape, duct tape, vice grips, spare clamps, fuses and even a couple of glow sticks!!.. ya never know when the battery might fail!! Sounds like a lot, but it gets me out of a lot of jams.. ie like when i was popping I/C hoses!! hehehe I carry it around all the time. as well as a couple of body colour matching towels to lay on the fenders!! Ya I'm sick.. not easy finding black bath towels! Not that my car is unrelieable. But it has saved my butt a couple of times, as well as fellow Z'rs at a club event. Hehehe what is funny, is I don't carry a jack or spare tire!!! Bwahahaha (car is too low anyways.)

Thanks for the replies guys. The research continues..I'll decide and order one by Fri. Won't matter much anyways.. need to run lower boost till new engine breaks in. But when its time to turn it up.. Got a cylinder head job, p&p and combustion chamber work, that is astounding.. just beautiful. The rods and crank all look like jewlery..you can use them as a mirror! Lightweight flywheel and pulleys. T3/T4 hybrid turbo. Polished downpipe. CF II clutch. stock manifolds but had them portmatched. New just about everything. Goal is 450hp (flywheel) 15+ psi of boost. Should still get me 28mpg on the highway!.. if I ever decide to drive it easy. (current best of 28mpg) This is actually working out great.. the summer is winding down, all my major car events are done, so I can drop the new motor in, and take it easy while I break it in for the fall. Should be tip top tuned and sorted out for next season. BTW current motor is holding on at 18psi.. burning a bit more oil.. but still ok.. I raced a late 70's TA on the weekend.. should have known better since guy had huge blower sticking out.. and no hood..and steel wheels with DR's on them.. I held on not too bad..He was extremely impressed with my little car!! Yes I lost..its ok though.. he probably had 500+ hp. Next time.......

Well I sold and shipped an L28 to the US, and I had to have it weighed. motor, head, cams, oilpan..no oil.. no flywheel, no starter, no distributor, no fan/clutch, no intake. but had headers. Including a 44x44 inch skid and a box made from 1/2" plywood.. 32" high. and various 2x4's for bracing, The whole smack came to 600lbs. I figure 50-75lbs for the wood... Don't know if it helps..but..
-
what about fuel? what octane? don't use anything under 91... especially in the summer... also.. hows your fuel pressure? if it is low.. you might go lean..hence pinging.. are you sure its pinging?.. check your plugs..are they very clean?.. any damage to them? are they the correct heat range for your 300 ? hmm can't think of anything better to check..my brain is ready for bed i guess.. becareful.
-
hmm no measurements, but I can tell you this. I have one bolted into my 78 280z, and it just bolted right in.. one thing.. it is taller..I had to oblong the holes so the hood could close. It is from an 280zxT with auto trans. Works great.

ya know I'm curious also. My rear wheels are ok toe wise, but my wheel base is slightly longer on one side by 1/2 inch when we measured from wheel centre to wheel centre. I had the car aligned last year, and the guy gave me the readout, and nothing looked really out of wack.. it was actually pretty close to stock settings...even with the car being so low.. If you look at my flares, you can see one wheel is tucked in tighter than the other.. ?? weird huh? I'll investigate more when I pull the diff this winter..I'm tossing my solid mount in the trash..WAY too noisy.

Guys, I'm now assembling my new motor, and I am going to buy a proper boost controler. I priced out some electronic ones ie the ApexI fancy dancy everything but the kitchen sink model.. $1200.00 !!!!!!!!! Cdn. ah.. pass I said. Just want to take a poll or so to see what kind of manual boost controler you guys are running or would like to run. I so far like the turboXS models.. not a bad price either. I really like my turboXS BOV. Thanks,

ok guys raced the ss that i played with last night

Very reminisent of me pounding on a 99-2002 Firebird firehawk. He had me off the line every time, but I was sqwaking the tires as I shifted into second RIGHT BESIDE HIS WINDOW, as I blew by. He never new what hit him. They do hook VERY well, as he could get half a car length in front of me as we launched through the intersection. It was all over after that, and that is all that matters to me. BTW now I run an LSD and wide sticky autoX tires out back. hehehe And an IC, And more boost, AND, AND, AHhhh will it ever end? Nice kill. Heard about the first time you met the SS. You needed to run him fair and square.. now its legal..uh er.. or is that illegal? Never mind... you beat him! -

Did ya notice the dash of that GTO.. someone here posted that pic a while back and guys weren't sure if it was real or not.. Remember the twin shift lights? Tons of action in that flick..big time.. Loads of laughs and fun!

Yesturday was an Ontario Z Car driver training/track day at Shannonville raceway. 10 turns with a 1/4 mile straight away. All flat with mostly flat runoff areas. A pile of Z's arrived, as well as 4 BMW's a Camaro, a couple of turbo'd XR4TI's, Porsches, and some plain cars, ie dodge avenger, chev beretta, Golf. It was sunny and hot at the track all day, and most people had a blast testing their cars and their skills. Now I can write all day about what happened, but I'll keep it to a minor report on my VG30ET powered 280Z with 18lbs of boost. Even with it being hot, my engine temps were absolutely normal, even at mid day. Power was wicked, and surprisingly easy to control, though I carried so much speed, I was shifting more than the other z's. I was getting in to higher gears on the various straightaways. Man did this car pull. But this is not the best part.. THE HANDLING!!! MAN does this car turn... it almost feels like steering one of those 4 wheel steering cars. Dead flat through the turns, and it ate up all kinds of mistakes I made. I never pushed the car over its limits.. it just kept turning the harder I pushed it. (I never did find its limits) It is very neautral feeling, and very light and tossable through the "S"'s I was able to get on the power very early in the exit and the car just tracked straight and ate the power and put it down, I never fishtaled once!. I was worried with this much torque, I would give it too hard, and just spin, but nope it just went. Also to report, the car is working well with my rear wheel adapters, and I am sure the extra 3" of track in the rear was making the car more stable. It felt very safe, and controlled. The brakes seem to work better with the weight being more even now.. (not as much weight on the front under braking) I was extremely impressed and surprised!! till my ignition packed it in... could not get it going..had to be towed home, and cruised back in my friends Z and followed the tow truck home. (1 and 1/2 hour tow) Expensive day. Price of racing I suppose.. Not angry though, it was near the end of the day anyways. New ignition module to be installed this week.. I'll be back on the hunt soon. hehehe

Got some more details on this car today. (from guy who built it. I heard the guy wrong.. he meant supercharger. It has a late model Grand Prix GTP 3.8L supercharged engine with some port and polish work, mild mods and some boost. They are 240hp stock. Serious Fiero indeed. Scott.

The boost bug that is... I think I'm getting really sick. I was looking at my stripped down block, and actually had the nerve to ask my mechanic to polish up my main water pump passeges... whatever he could see. I was looking in there, and I saw all kinds of very rough casting marks, and thought it would restrict water flow, thus making my water pump work harder, thus using MY!!! hp to drive the darn thing!! Is that over the top or what? Ahhh the bottom end looks like jewlery now.. nice and shiny.. no rough edges.hehehe My mechanic is pretty cool, knows his Z's, and is friendly enough to put up with my crazy ideas, suggestions, and requests for more power. I thought 7-10 psi with no I/C would be enough.. but NNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!! I had to get sick and turn it up to 15psi.. then decided I needed an I/C.. cool that ought to do it. But NNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!! I had to turn it up to 18 now.. and now it spikes almost 20 briefly... I may need my new engine quicker than I planned if I keep this up.. Man.. I may need a girlfriend to keep me from spending all my money on my car!! or killing myself!! or both..hehehehe

I've been hanging out with a pretty large core of muscle cars/street racers lately. I'm quite shocked at the lack of safety equipment being used by people upgrading the performance of their vehicles. I mean I talked about upgrades to suspensions/brakes, belts, cages etc.. only a handful of guys even up graded their brakes from 4 wheel drums to front discs!!!!!!!!!!! The import guys were only marginally better with upgraded 4/5 point harnesses, and the odd guy with bigger brakes. What is it with safety. yea it adds weight, and cost to a car, but come on I really don't want to die in my car. Do you? There were some wicked fast cars there with next to nothing else done to them besides driveline..9-10sec cars.!!! I was not the fastest car their by a long shot. But I'd rather be in my car than any car there if I was in a crash. I've been hearing guys stipping their cars down to save weight, but hey don't go too far fellas.. Lemans cars are light, but they could be much lighter and faster without all that safety gear. Not trying to sound preachy guys. I drive my car to its limits too.. but I also take safety seriously. Workplace safety is a big focus at work and it has rubbed off on me over the years. I'd hate to hear of anyone here killing themselves in an unsafe Z. oh and do it right to. improperly installed safety equipment may be even more dangerous..(false sense of security.) Make sure you all save some $$ for some brakes, suspension/tires, seatbelts, etc, for when you drop your 300++++ hp driveline in. Ok ok I'll get down off my soapbox. I don't mean to offend anyone.. Just don't want to see any hurt themselves out there.

I know a guy who has a 350 in his 87 300zx 2+2. He had a turbo engine. He likes the low end grunt of the v8 but thinks his turbo engine (i/c'd with 15psi) was quicker in the top end. BTW he modifying his Z with one of those saleen bodies.... yea.. he nuts.. needs to widen the suspension by 8" to fit the kit..

Hanging out at the local coffee shop again last night. More nice iron. Supercharged SVT's Blown Novas, tubbed camaros, classic mustangs, Hondas, Acuras.. and my buddies supra, and myself in my 280Z. Beat down a modded firebird on the way there.. The guy could not believe it.. I didn't just beat him, I buried the man!! With the boost turned up now, I can spin my sticky Victoracer tires, as I was blowing his doors off. I could hardly believe it.. this car is insane! Like Scottie MiZ my BOV must be scaring off people.. most guys so far have backed down after reving me. hehehe Anyways here is why I'm posting. Came across a wolf in sheeps clothing last night.. the cold air intake over the roof of this Fiero was a warning of things to come. He knew my car was a 240Z...(280Z actually, but close enough) He was heading in the other direction. He u turned and followed me. Hoping for a quick kill. hehehe We were cruising on the outskirts of town on a road that forked and went from 4 lanes to 6 and became one way streets. 3 in each direction. We toyed a bit, just as the road opens to 3 lanes and floored it. It is a 50kph zone with a nasty S curve at the start. We blast through the s at triple digit speeds, I hesitated slightly (didn't want to kill myself) and followed just behind him and to the inside. Man do Fieros ever handle well.!! We line up at a empty light.(a lamo in a wide tired Cutlass catches up and lines up in the far lane..hehe) The dude in the Fiero was impressed with me staying with him through the curves. We line up and start reving. light goes green and we both light the tires.. too much wheelspin for me though, and we are off. Bam 1st gear, (cutlass is way behind) wind out 3rd and this fiero is right beside me. We cruise together for a bit as we enter the town, and as we leave the town, we race 2 more times, same results.. even do a 3rd gear rolling start.. both of us spinning our tires. I could not believe how fast this Fiero was!! He said he was running a 3.8L v6 with a turbo (GN?) don't know. very fast. he said he thought he was just going to beat me bad. So it turns out we were both wolves in sheeps clothing prowling last night. I was still over boosting last night, so I had to feather the throttle all night to keep the boost around 15-17psi. Not too bad. I figure if I could have floored it, and speed shifted, I would have beat him. We were side by side everytime..he could get his door past my hood when I shifted, that was the best he could do. I have not launched the car that hard with my lsd this year.. So I need some practice on my launch, but not as bad as last year... (no bogs) I was amazed at how quick I was in 3rd gear... Just raw power. I have to be running extreme low 5's or lower 0-60mph. seat of the pants tells me the car is huge amounts quicker than before when I ran high 5's 0-60. I can't wait for the new motor. Who ever said boost isn't an addictive drug was a down right lier. I think I'm going crazy!

Hey Scottie. I'm running a stock VG30ET motor with an I/C, throttle body, exhaust, and upped the boost. I do have a motor being rebuilt as we speak, and I just picked up a t3/t4 hybrid for it. It is getting lower end work, head work, etc.. Looking for 400 hp. Easy to say.. hard to achieve.
-
Widest part of the VG30DET motor is @ the valve covers (approx) I meausred it leave us 1/2" clearance of the shock towers on either side. Tight fit. Scott. I have a TT drivline at the shop I can measure if anyone really needs some dimesions.. its for sale to BTW.

Mine started out towards a street legal full tilt race car... It has now evolved into an exotic super car.. designed for a road coarse, but still driveable on a semi regular basis. Mine is not a sunday driver.. not a daily driver... somewhere in between. I'm not afraid to take it to the track. Though I try to get through the day without a scratch. hehe Street warrior/roadcourse

IF you want to talk stock.. the automatic turbo zx was .6 seconds faster than the 5spd. 0-60 manual was 7.7 auto was 7.1.

Hey Rated Z. It is a TurboXS type H BOV. it is adjustable, but it vents to atmosphere. as an eg. my buddy can hear my turbo and my BOV every time I shift with his windows up, and 50ft in front of me... he can always tell when I'm on the throttle, and uses it to get a jump on me.. (just playing around tho. I can match him with 1/2 thottle) hehehe he doesn't really like that part too much..hehehe now he wants to go turbo. I can make people jump on the sidewalk if I shift when I pass them. Its like a truck bleeding off his air brakes.. ... Loud. I never floor my car.. "you see I had a hole cut in the floor. I smash the gas pedal 2ft beyond the floor. I stretch out my leg all it can suffer!" Boost is addictive man.... BIG time!!!
