    My new L6

Those are some pretty decent #'s. I like seeing others build monster N/A motors as well. Nothing like the skill needed to get 100hp per litre from an N/A! I too had a killer N/A engine. Not cheap either almost $12K including everything. I was pushing 300hp from a 2.9L with 10.5:1 compression. ran it with 94 octane and occasionally with some octane booster on track days in the summer with up to 40 degrees of ign advance. The secret in the engines is all in the cyl heads. I'd like to talk to a few of you guys about jetting with your carbs. I have found that most guys are over carbed. I don't know who is recommending all these huge carbs for our cars. I usually hear about that you should not run anything smaller than a 45mm DCOE! its absolutely bullsh*t for anything other than a full tilt gt race car. I have tried several different main venturi sizes in 40 and 45mm Webers, and got some decent learnings in jetting for our z's. Anyways I'd love to chat about your bogging problems. I may even be able to help you out. I had someone help me work out the cfm of my carbs (40mm doces) I can't recall off the top of my head the size of venturis we did this excersice with... but anyways, it worked out to almost 1100cfm. Just some food for thought. Thanks, Scott. aka retired "Weber Warrior" now a boostaholic.
  2. most new player are DIN size. There is enough room on the stock console.. you do need to cut a DIN size hole (where stereo faceplate sits) take the console out for this. I would think that most newer stereos would have a sheet with the instructions for exact size hole to cut in the console.. It is a fairly tight fit..not much extra plastic in the consol left..so you need to be careful that you don't break the plastic. I used a metal DIN mounting plate from my stereo to attach at the backside of the console to give it more support. (not sure if all stereos come with this plate or not.. (I originally did this 10 years ago) I currently have a new Sony CD/MP3 player in the car. Fits well, and only skips on the harshest of bumps on the road.
  3. After my turbo engine swap, I test drove the car with my old R200 4.11 that I used very successfully with my high reving N/A L28. Funny as heck.. with almost 1500rpm less to play with, I was shifting like a madman. I raced a newer DSM, and I was winding 3rd gear as the DSM was just still in 2nd. hehehe Anyways back to the reason for this post. I could not build full boost in any gear.. 5-7 psi that was it...Well all in the same day, I brought the car back to the shop and we swapped in a 3.9 that I had laying around at the shop.. The boost came up a pound or two.. (no mods..just the diff)I blasted up the street a couple of times then brought it back. Right there and then we swapped it out again, and dropped in a 3.54 that a friend had left in storage at the shop..Now I had boost! Now I could hit max boost in all gears! (12psi) Unfortunately I had to return the 3.54 diff, as I purchased a lsd unit that had 3.7 gears in it..I'm not entirely happy with the 3.7's..I'd like to swap out the crown gear and make it a 3.54. I'll get around to it... (my boost is now uneven in each gear.. boost a lb or two low in 1st. perfect in 2nd and 3rd, and too high in 4th and 5th.. 3 diffs within 3 hrs..
  4. Looks like a bike the Terminator might drive! 0-60 in 2.5 sec 500+ hp I wonder how it corners..does the chassis lean?..but leave the tires perpendicular to the ground? Talk about intimidation factor at a light!
  5. Anyone have any info on these units for a Z? Anyone use one? I went to their site, but they only mention a kit for the R200 in the 240sx. Will it fit our R200's (ours have a longer pinion drive correct?) I'm just curious on the kit itself.. are they any good? I hardly trust a mfg claim.. let alone a company I only know through the internet. Thanks.
  6. Do you think the headers will hold up those turbo's.. longterm? Or are you going to ad additional insulated bracing to support their weight? Looks awsome so far!
  7. As I understand (and seen) The front rubber insulators (on top of the strut) are the same thickness. the rear rubber insulators on the 280 are almost 1.5" thicker. Free length on the front springs from 240 - 280 are about 1" different in length. Sorry.. don't have much more experience with 240's..
  8. I know a member of my Z club has done it in a full tilt race 240Z. Super fast. I heard he hit 174mph on the back straight at Mosport! I have no other info for ya http://www.whiteheadperformance.com/ This is the engine builders website.. Greg is a great guy with tons of info on Modding Z's. Not sure how forthcoming of info on the V6 swap as it is for a private customer. Ya know racers secrets? that kind of stuff.

    SR20 or RB

Well I'm going to respond to the VG30ET engine route, as I can attest to "been there done that" NO way you can build 500hp for less than $5k.. MAYBE you'd come close if you did ALL the assembly/rebuild work. I know.. I just finished my motor. way over $8K, and I did not build the motor myself. Yes you can buy a cheap low mileage block and do it up.. but i'd hardly trust a $5k investment in a USED engine with an unknown past. I had all my parts machined, balanced, polished etc...new parts where needed. Reliablility is a huge factor at the 500hp level... in other words..things need to be perfect... I also agree with Scottie FULLY on the part of spending BIG $$$$$$ on the rest of the car. 500hp WILL KILL YOU AND YOUR Z. This is FACT brakes are critical, so is a cage, so are lsds, stronger halfshafts etc.. you will break things in a hurry. Too many people driving Z's into the 12's in which the rest of the car is near stock.. WAY TOO SCARY. I'd also be quick to challenge most Z owners truely being able to handle a 500hp Z. down a straight line is one thing.. on the street is a whole other ballgame.. rain, other cars, kids etc... $5K on motor (you do all work) $5K on brakes, suspension $1K on cage, harnesses etc.... Plus another $2K for miscellanious breakage (they are at least 25yr old cars now) Now your talking realistic attainable goals.. Account for another $5k if you are not able to, or have time to do a lot of the work. Now thats more real. Just my 0.2 cents (14yrs Z experience)
  10. That spitfire with the vette wheels.. anyone else see the resemblence of a BMW Z3? I can hardly believe that someone actually stuffed a 460 in one!! Those guys sound pretty nutz! I love it!!!
  11. I work with technical services for a large automotive paint mfg. I work onsite with the customer to ensure they get the maximum performance from our coatings. I help oversee quality with 2 high tech spray booths over 300ft long each! and they paint 1100 cars a day. Cool job that I love that lets me talk cars all day long. (ok not always Datsuns) Yea I'm a car nut.
  12. Oh just in case your wondering, I'm not on crack. I did the swap as a challenge, and just to do something different with my Z.. kinda personalize it a bit hehe. oh.. and the "WOW" factor!
  13. Hey hotshift and redbaron! I am the one Hotshift mentioned. You are going to find little to no info on this swap. I did plenty of research, and to my personal knowledge. I only know of one other fellow with the swap, and he is from Australia. I did the swap almost 2 years ago, and still have not heard of a single person that has attempted the swap. It is not because it is too hard.. it all comes down to money. The cost per hp (including the install) is about 4 times higher than building and swapping in a 400+hp V8. Just my personal experience. email if you want any other info. I'll help you out where I can. As pointed out above, I have written a couple of pages worth on the subject, and have posted lots of pics at the zdriver.com site. Good luck if you decide to go for it!
  14. BTW don't just look at hp comparisons. The Altima has only 5hp more than the Accord... but almost 40 ft/lbs more torque.
  15. Hey what about the Nissan Altima? It is a direct competitor with the Accord. When I got down to comparing apples to apples, I just could not ignore the Altima. Standard features/optional equipment, the Accord just didn't match up. I bought an 03 Altima 3.5.
  16. I don't know who's worse? The guys for typing all that stuff.. or me for spending 3/4 of an hour reading every page while at work? Funny reading.. LS1 guys should not be so cocky.. most seemed good about it...They better becareful coming on this site talking how fast they are!.. they'd be in for some big surprises from our members.. Never underestimate the little guy.. Y'all know the new Mini ads right? "My money's on the little guy" I have been/will be the underdog, and it makes victory that much more satisfying.
  17. I bought myself a turnkey 72. Strolling through the local Toy store doing some xmas shopping for the nephew, and came accross a 1972 240 Diecast. 1/18 scale. I had seen them in the past, but only green or orange. There was one left..BLACK! Wahoo! Looks cool on my movie stand. Black Z to match my Black Z. Very detailed as well (working steering, doors/hood open up etc...) I was impressed for $29.00! I'll set it up on my dash at my next car show. I like shopping this way.. "one for me, one for who I'm shopping for next"!!
  18. Drop me an email. if you want some pics. It is pretty hard to take good interior shots, and it usually takes many shots just to get an idea of whats in the car. Because of this, I have only 1 or two shots @ zdriver.com I do however have several pics of most of my cage saved on my computer for just these kinds of instances. Hehehe some of you who have received Z car vids from me (VHS copies) have had some bonus stuff at the end, when I did a tour of the Mosport racetrack upgrades, and a few minutes of me walking around my Z with the video camera shooting as much of the cage as I had in the car at that time. (it is more extensive now)
  19. Hehehe all ya need is another L28 engine in the back of the car just to help spool the turbo for ya!! Not like the extra weight will affect 1200hp very much!!
  20. 50lbs? ouch. So much for weight reduction.. As far as suspension goes.. I'm right in the spring range now.. (maybe a bit higher) I have the illuminas in the car now.. though I want the adjustables in the back to stiffen it up a touch more. Understeer huh?.. hmm this could lean me slightly more to the other side of the neutral "feel".. Mine is pretty neutral feeling now..the front goes so well around corners, I'm sure the car will oversteer at its limits currently (haven't pushed it enough on the track to find out this season.) Not real happy with the unsprung weight...it probably won't be all that noticeable .. maybe after some serious track time..I guess I should weigh my wheels, so I can get a before/after idea of changes.. Been looking seriously at the compomotive site with the 5 star rims (avail in 4 lug)
  21. Ok here is topic I've not seen discussed. How does larger rear tire width affect handling.. either street use or track. I'm talking Wide tires. I'm running 225's out front, 265 out back. Not that wide in the back I know, but I have lots of flare to fill, and I want to go wider. More for looks.. It looks like I'm going to end up switching to custom made 17" rims to get the width I need as well as keeping the overall diameter under 26". I'm planning on a 315/35/17 in the rear and possibly a 235/35/17 out front. (ya they will fit... even without coilovers! How will this large rear tire affect my cornering, as well as overall grip, and street highway handling/stability. As long as it is not worse, I'm ok with it.. Like I said I want the looks.. not neccessarily more traction... my 265 Victoracer 700's are wicked for hooking up! The car doesn't feel "darty" on the highway now.. will it later? Thanks.
  22. BIG flares, or smaller flares/and coilovers are the only way to stuff that size in those wheel wells. 3" flares with coilovers should get you there. I'm not running coilovers, but am using large flares to fit my 265/45/16's in my wheel wells. They are mounted on 16x9 rims with near zero offset..(can't remember my offset..its not much) That is all I can help with..
  23. Yea remember the new batmobile going around the corner? (first batman movie I think).. he shot out a cable to a lampost, and cornered that thing like it was..uhh on a cable! Hmm let see in batman forever, didn't his wheels.. (front and back) weren't they able to turn fully perpendicular?.. talk about 4 wheel steering.. ok I've said more than enough..
  24. Not sure how great ME is, but my buddy has been using Kazaa with ME for a couple of years with no probs that I have heard him talk about. File is approx 20 megs.. I'll have to check.. Hey I still have no host for my 48meg Z video. still have a couple in the under 12 meg size as well. All Z's..
  25. That vid is on the net. I got a copy from Kazaa (file sharing system similar to napster) I think I also saw it at racingflix.com. cool vid though... Nice to be able to beat other fast cars that easily.
