  1. carbs need rebuilt, check your vacuum advance. that engine is just fine, its something on the intake, could be fuel lines clogged as well try flushing the tank.
  2. I probably have one of the crappiest z's on here, but she has been a faithful DD for almost a year... she's 35 years old and when I bought it I pulled the head to see what state the engine was in, smooth walls... it doesn't use any oil and still has plenty of power... I am so glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the gas smell... my girlfriend calls it my perfume.
  3. if possible stick a shifter on one and count.
  4. I've started to draw some things out and have been collecting bar... dune buggies are pretty fun me and my dad have built two and are starting on a third...
  5. I have been debating this for along time but I figured I would take this discussion to this forum... I have a 240z who is way past her prime, her frame rails are gone, and she has been picked and parted to near oblivion by myself and others, but what she does have is. 1) solid engine, turns runs well. 2) solid transmission, shifts smooth and clean. 3) the body past the front fenders is relatively solid and easily shored up. so here is my question to you. If I ran a roll cage through the car and put a tube frame front end similar to a double a-arm set up on a long travel dune buggy, then do a similar long travel setup with some king coilovers on the back... do you think she would make a spanking sand car?
  6. my 260 does the same thing, I'm not really sure whats up with it, but its gone 6,000 miles in my possession and hasn't died yet, i think its bad support on the mustash bar for the diff, but who knows...
  7. Mine is 100$ a month on one ticket so 1200 a year and I'm 20
  8. do you have to run a cat? you don't have to in Kansas, mine is set up 6 to one into a resonator and into the muffler, I am not an exhaust expert but does the cat really do anything other than make hippies happy?
  9. oh jeez, you want to talk about rat rods, I need to take pictures of my heap. Mine is a 74 shell with a 73 engine and tranny, (sadly the good 240 was title less and the 260 with the bum engine wasn't) it is currently in four different colors with the roof in primer, the rockers are gone and I patched the floors with fiber glass. my hatch is off of my 240 and soon the hood will be too, I couldn't get the blinkers to work so I installed dune buggy blinkers in the grill and now the lower valances just have gaping holes( I tell people their break vents.) the cars lower center valance is off the 240 and was collapsed in so I beat it back out, it looks horrible. but I don't care because the look on every ford mustang owners face when I beat their asses in my jelope is good enough for me.
  10. I had a rattle, when I pulled the panel I found that the glass had been previously broken and there was a ton that had collected at the bottom of the door.
  11. this just goes to show, with Dr. Pepper, you can accomplish anything.
  12. I was up until 2:30 am after starting to replace on of my U-joints and it got me thinking whats your worst project day? here's how my Saturday went: 1. got up at about 8:30 feeling good. 2. started my drive to my dads house(My car is an hour away from me.) 3. my van stalled on the on ramp for the interstate(coil roast.) 4. two coils later and a lot of heartache, it is now 11:30 am and I am finally at my dads house. 5. 1:30pm: two hours later my dad pinned down the electrical problem and fixed the van(I'm not the best at electrical work, I'm lost AC or DC. feeling confident that my van is now fixed, I pull it out of the garage and go to start my Z.... dead battery, no problem quick jump and I start to roll it into the garage..... upon entering the garage my car makes a hideous scream and dies... dropped the transmission, apparently it developed a slow leak the two weeks it was parked and had no fluid what so ever in it. no problem I figure, I have a spare. 6. 8:30pm: well that's over, with new transmission, it will be fine now... as I was leaving the underside of my car I noticed a rather bad gas smell, I glanced to the rear to see gas dripping from the top of the gas tank... well I figured, "Its already on jacks." 7. 11:30pm: after replacing every single piece of hosing for the gas tank, that managed to disintegrate in only two weeks, I felt that all my problems were finally behind me. after pouring my siphoned gas back into the tank I started the car and let it warm up. 8. 11:40pm: I hop in my car and flip on my lights to discover to my amazement, I don't have any, at all. 9. 12:00am: it's not the fuses not the fusible link. I've checked all my grounds and traced every wire... in sear frustration I kick the tire... bingo! Lights on and I'm starting my drive home... only to find to my amazement, I forgot to plug in my reverse lights. 10. 1:30am: after spending an hour and a half trying to make them work, I quit in frustration, and started my drive home. 11. 2:30am: I begin wondering what I really accomplished that day, My car runs no better than before and I'm pretty sure that the light situation is going to come back and haunt me sooner or later. So somebody cheer me up, lets here your story.
  13. my word thats some moneys... I'm just happy mine starts in the morning.
  14. i'm doing the same as dhp but I am shaving the armrest/handles... I just dont like the way they look.
  15. I used truck bed liner, may the flaming begin.
  16. I bought the 260z for 100$ then the next day I bought the 240z that was next to her for 100$, I would say I put about 2000$ in the project, but a lot of that was vanity( I like comfy seats)... if you are buying a "parts" z.. what is going to kill you is rubber, all kinds of rubber, rubber, rubber, rubber... I swear if I have to replace another piece of rubber I will snap... but on the other hand, I will have to agree with whats been said multiple times in this thread... fix it to street legal, don't bother with anything else... then drive the sweet piss out of it... you won't be disappointed.
  17. I just ran some spare hose into the hole and held the bottle upside down on the passenger side...
  18. well I know for sure that it will fit in a 260 automatic but yes you will have to cut about 3/4 of an inch on the front of the opening.
  19. I searched the site but could not find an answer to this question. I am trying to order k&n airfilters for my '71 carbs but can only find a set for '70 carbs, are there differences? I know that the 71 and 70 carbs are both roundtops so I was just wondering if I order the filters for the '70 carbs will they work?
  20. well atleast you didnt have holes you could put your foot through.
  21. is it surging and slowing really quick?... my parents put a rev governor on my corolla (AHAHAH!) when i was in high school and 4 grand( I'm really not sure what rpm it was at, corollas dont have tacs.) it would just kind of... man how to describe that in text... it would just but its max and cut back a few hundred rpm and bump again... like wahwahwahwahwahwah but rapidly like just enough to almost sound like bad timeing.
  22. Was bought for 100$ 20 minutes from the crusher? My pics are on another pc but if you look at them I swear it's smiling. it better I saved it's ass.
  23. I had that happen when I first bought my z and was driving it home... pretty funny on the side of the road with expired tags and a non-op title... ended up being a bad wiring job on the battery, the negative wire vibrated off its grounding.
  24. oh and i believe they are 73's, how do you tell? The thing is that the car I pulled them off is a 260z but it has a 71 240z engine and tranny, the guy that put them on didn't know about the older carbs being better until later, but he is pretty shure they are 73s... I got the car with the old style su carbs in the trunk as well as a driver side door, driver side glass, and AC.
