  1. Has anyone put together a list of headers that will work with the LS-series engines in the 240-280z cars? Would sure make a nice sticky post to have around. Thanks, Stewart
  2. Ones I have are the vette C6 ls2 listed above. They direct the exhaust right into the framerails on the 240z. Suppose I'll have to come up with some 98-2001 camaro ls1 manifolds. Those being the ones that John and johns cars based his kit after. Wonder if there are any cheap headers that would work... (150 bucks or less). Thanks, Stewart
  3. I bought a GM LS3 376ci 480hp crate motor. I also purchased a john's cars kit to install it with into my 73' 240z. The problem I'm running into is the exhaust manifold on the drivers side is dumping too close to the motor mount (right on top of the steering shaft). I thought about trying to buy a 98-01 camaro manifold but i got to looking and the exhaust ports are way smaller on the ls1 than on the ls3. I don't have the cash to buy a new set of headers to remedy this. (Taxes hurt this year) So i'm stuck trying to piece together stuff from junkyards atm. Anyone have any suggestions on a good flowing manifold that exits as far to the rear of the engine as possible? Mine atm exits under the third cylinder back and needs to be under the fourth. Been working on car for 6 months and almost finished only to be stumped here at the end by a manifold lol never fails..... Any ideas would sure be appreciated. Thanks, Stewart
  4. Car-parts.com best used car site I have found. Got 2 sets of 300zxt cv axles for $180 shipped. May have posi unit there thats useable. Stewart
  5. Need mustache bar from a 280z so I can install r200 rearend under my 240z. Willing to pay $40.00 + shipping. Thanks, Stewart
  6. Grumpy i was looking on LS1tech.com and may have stumbled apon a couple ways to fix my problem. Just wanted to pass them on to you incase someone else asks my question at a later date. One guy there just created a bracket that is attached to his gas pedal that pulls the TV cable to its w.o.t position as the pedal bottoms out. He says its works fine. Another option is to attach a "dummy" throttle cable to the gas pedal and run it underhood to a spring loaded lever that would then pull the TV cable instead of the throttle body butterfly. I think i'm going to go with the second option myself. I think it will be easier to adjust it that way. Thanks, Stewart
  7. http://i445.photobucket.com/albums/qq176/55cannonball55/DSC01970.jpg Wish I would have spent the extra few hundred bucks and went with the 4L60E trans.
  8. Yeah, wish my engine had the cable run butterfly like in the above picture. Mines all enclosed and the butterfly inside the throttle body opening is the only thing that pivots. Nothing at all for me to mount it to. I was thinking about possibly mounting it to the gas pedal but, that sets off all kinds of alarms in my brain... I don't want to watch a $2,300 TCI trans go up in flames.
  9. If you decide you want another 73 motor that runs fine shoot me a PM I just pulled mine for a swap. $750 + shipping oh comes with 4 speed trans also. You'd be back on track for cheap. Has a bit of upgrade (ported polished heads, bob sharp intake, holley 650 cfm carb) I'll go into more detail if your interested.... Thanks, Stewart
  10. Grumpy, got a question for you that has stumped several long time hotrodders. I bought a LS3 that is drive by wire. The wiring harness from GM actually came with an electrically controlled gas pedal to run the electric throttle body. Problem i'm having is a bought a 700r4 trans to go behind it and I have no clue where i'm going to mount the TV cable. I have seen the results of not getting the TV cable set right. Watched peoples expensive trans go up in smoke it 5-10 miles. Any suggestions? I'd really like to stick with the trans if able. If it comes down to it I'll just install a fully manual reverse valve body and shift it but, since it is a street car I'd rather not have to go that route. Thanks, Stewart
  11. Rims came in and they look much better than I had imagined. The pictures do them no justice. What tire sizes people running? I was looking into 275/40 in back and 255/40 in front. Since i got the staggered set of rims. Thanks, Stewart
  12. Does anyone have a part number for the axles needed to run with the billet conversion from modern mototrsports? I have read numerous threads here before asking, and they say z31 turbo cars have them but nissan no longer makes the axles. I plan on buiying them from Orielly's but hate standing in there all day while they chase down some part they have no clue about. So much easier if you have a part number... I have learned thru my searching the threads that some people are having serious problems with the axles and modern motorsports conversion kits working smoothly? Does MM recommend an axle to use with their system or do they just leave ya hanging to figure it out for yourself? Their kit cost me $1300 and for that price I don't wanna deal with any headaches. I hate buying stuff to find out its not what I need and having to rebuy. Any help would be much appreciated. Parts being used from MM : http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32_53&products_id=46 http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32_53&products_id=62 My car is 1973 240z with r200 rearend. Thanks, Stewart
  13. Check Gm part # 19201327 its a kit for the LS series engines. comes with wiring harness, all sensors, the electronic accelerator pedal (complete bolt in pedal), computer, weld in bungs for O2 sensors, Mass air flow meter (with mounting boss) I think I paid 900 for mine thru jegs. Mines for the 480 horse power LS3 but they make one for each motor. Its a complete kit and very well built harness, same as would be in a new vette or whatnot, not some crap built in some guys garage with crimped on ends and electrical tape. Kinda nice that is runs fuel pump and trans shifts also but they are not needed to be hooked up if you don't want to use them. Stewart
  14. Scoop that parts bin out from under the hood and slap in a LS series and you'd have something. It is a beauty though.
  15. Rofl, that motorhome is the funniest thing i've seen in a long time.
  16. I got a running motor/trans/rearend combo you can have out of my 73' 240z 500$ ,but I won't be pulling it for another month. Pickup only at that price. If it was me though i'd just buy the conversion kit from jags that run and put you a smallblock chevy/turbo350trans combo in there. It will be much more fun than one of those cubic inch challenged 6 bangers. Stewart
  17. In a perfect world (where tires never spin ). What kind of power would it take to lift the front end of a 2300lbs 240z during acceleration? Just kinda curious if i'll be in that territory with 500hp. My guess is i won't be bothered with it though since torque is only gonna be 480ft lbs. I know there will be a ton of factors to figure this out but i'm just looking for a ballpark figure, doesn't have to be exact. Thanks, Stewart
  18. Thanks Grumpy. Really cool of you to take your time out to help everyone out like this. Thanks, Stewart
  19. Heya grumpy. I'm building a 1972 240z. So far I have purchased these parts. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=NAL%2D19171224&N=700+4294925232+115&autoview=sku http://www.jegs.com/i/TCI/890/371000P1/10002/-1 R200 rearend unit the stock CLSD unit (bought some of those clutches that were cut by a member so will have 6 new clutches in it) I have not started any of the conversion. Just getting everything purchased and ready. The car should weigh about 2400lbs. at the moment I hope to get it down to around 2100-2200lbs. What rear end gearing would you suggest? I do plan on flaring the rearend and running bigger tires. Maybe 10.5 cheaterslicks on weekends and something bit less sticky for the street. About same sized though. The gearing in it atm is 3.70:1. I was kinda leaning towards maybe 3.23 for better mpg and higher top end. Whats your thoughts on this? I want to keep the car streetable, but be able to get the blood pumping when i press the "Go pedal".
  20. The cam in the stock ls3/480hp is Camshaft: (88958733 -LS "Hot Cam") Hydraulic roller .525" Intake lift, .525" Exhaust lift, 219° Intake duration, 228° Exhaust duration, 112° Lobe seperation Which seams kinda mild to me with only .525 lift. yet gm calls it their "hotcam". Yet the thing has great power curves. heres dyno page link http://paceperformance.com/ProductImages/manufacturer/gm/images/19171224Dyno.jpg Should i stick with this stock cam or upgrade and make more power? I hate to install the motor if i'm gonna want to change the cam but I also hate to install a cam and kill the 2 year warranty. Thanks, Stewart
  21. all things considering is John's car kit the best one out there? i plan on buying one in next couple weeks and don't want to have any problems. thanks, stewart
  22. jegs has it for right at 7,000$ including shipping it looks like. heres link http://www.jegs.com/p/GM+Performance/1127485/10002/-1 still worth the trip to local chevy house. plus easier to deal with customer service issues (incase something is wrong) with someone local instead of online company. as far as lightening my z i plan on all bumper removal, running aluminum driveshaft, removing door crash bars, removing and cutting out sparetire and dish out in the truck, removing gas tank and installing poly fuel cell, lightweight rims with low profile tires, not sure if i can hit 2,100lbs. but going to give it a shot. i figure its possible since a stock 240z weighs only 2,300 lbs. and the LS3 i'm installing only weighs 35lbs. more than the stock motor.
  23. building 1973 240z with ls3 bolted to 700r4 trans and a r200 clsd for the rearend. trying to get 525hp with 2100lbs. of weight. hopefully it will be interesting to drive.
  24. guys just a heads up if your looking for a great price on a LS3 376 c.i. 480hp/475tq. the sticker price on these are 8,900ish bucks but most chevy dealers will price match with other chevy dealers. so i looked forn 3-4 hours and found a dealer in lancaster,pa that actually sells this motor at cost. thats almost 3,000 off sticker price. 2,000 cheaper than jegs. they have it listed at $6,299.00. heres a link to them. https://store.gmperformanceparts.com/store/SelectProd.do?prodId=7714&redir=true&manufacturer=GM&name=LS376/480%20EFI%20LS3%20Gen%20IV%20V-8%20&model= i had my local chevy match their price and got mine in last week. just wanted to share with you guys. edit:when you go to the link... where it says find a dealer type in the zipcode 17601 then click on the jones gm parts warehouse.
  25. got a link to your brother? yeah carquest sounds good i called the wolf creek guys and they want a grand for their axle kit with axle stubs. i didn't want to invest that much in half shafts. i figured 500-600 bucks max.
