  1. Put the new carb on (Holley Street Avenger 670) and now the hood won't close on my 280zx. I wanted to try to keep the hood stock, but now I don't have much of an option. It's a shame, too, because this hood is completely straight and rust free. But then again I remind myself that it's a zx so it's value isn't as high to me as the original Z, so it's not exactly "mutilating"

The only other thing I can think of is if I buy one of those air filters that has a setup like a "T" (the quotes being the air filters) which is supposed to help with hood clearance, but they cost over $250 (in the Summit catalog, at least) and I really don't feel like spending that much on an air filter, seeing as how I just dumped $1100 into the engine. :?

A $50 hood scoop seems more in my range, but anyways, like I mentioned earlier, I would rather choose to not resort to that option. What would you do in this situation?

Thanks in advance for the replies

  2. BTW - it's coming back

Holy Sh!t  My prayers have been answered!! :hail: :hail: :hail:

It's about time somebody got their head on straight and decided to put the show back on. :2thumbs:

How did it get cancelled in the first place? :twak:

  3. If you've done a good job of matching the components then there should be no problem.

The biggest problem you will have is cam and lifter wear. Cams that make 400 hp will not have a 100K mile lifespan like a stock cam.

My current setup is mild. It's a stock bottom end, stock dished pistons, Holley Systemax II aluminum heads, victor jr intake, Msd ignition, Rhoads lifters, 280H comp cam (230 ; 480/480), headers, 8mm wires, and I'm sure I'm missing a couple of other small things. So with that cam setup, how long do you think I should wait before I change out the valvetrain components?

The cooling system is a griffin 26 x 19 radiator with dual electric fans, and when I was referring to problems with carburetors, it was mainly directed towards their cold start issues and having to tune them...although I have heard that Holley's carbs are easy to tune.

Furthermore, if you drive a lot on the highway, keeping the rpms low will extend the engine life. So a 3 speed automatic car with a 3.90 gear will last half as long as a 5spd car with 3.55 gears.

I'm usually running around 2000 rpms on the highway. I do have a 3.9 rear, but I also have the advantage of a T56's wonderful overdrive, so it compensates for the rear ratio.

Thanks for the replies...any others want to chime in?

  4. This post is pretty much a question to those who drive Zs with carbed Chevy 350s or have had previous experience with them. I'm concerned of the reliability issue of having a carbed 350 and needing it to drive every day, seeing as how it's my only car. I will rely on this car to get me to college, work, and then safely back home without overheating or leaving me stranded. The engine is not a monster, but I'm pushing around 400 hp, and sadly yes, it is carbureted with a brand new Holley Street Avenger 670. I know that these engines are dirt cheap and are a penny a dozen, but can you actully put your trust it? :?:

I just need reliable transportation for about 5 years -- this includes frequent oil changes, plug changes, timing chain, etc. I will not neglect this engine, I just don't know if I can trust it, and I'm wondering if buying a second car wouldn't be a stupid move and a waste of money.

Again, I'm just asking you about your previous experiences with the reliability of a 350. Thanks for any help or advice.

  5. Sorry to bring this post back up, but I figured that I'd share let you know that I recently recieved an email with the artist and name of that ghetto song. He said it's "Love Joint" by the Mercenaries, but he's not sure if they ever put out an album. He said he'll look into it for me. I've been looking around, but I can't seem to find that song anywhere. Anyways, just figured I'd throw that out in case somebody else wanted to search around for that song. :2thumbs:

  6. With the search function not working I can't find the answer, but I know it's in the archives, so here's the question:

What size radiator fits best in a 280zx? I'm fixing to order a Griffin tonight and I just need to know what size to get. I believe it's a 26 X 19, but I couldn't find any info to back it up, so I'm just going to make sure before I order the wrong one.

Also, I'm having some trouble removing the oil pan and ALL of the bolts are off -- any suggestions? (for a 350 sbc)

    Thanks :D

  7. Hey, thanks for the tip -- that's a great site. It's such a pain trying to find lights with the white round middle cheaply and in decent shape, I think I'm just going to stick with the plain red lights. Thanks again...now if I can only find those little round headlights...

  8. Maybe some Audioslave and Perfect Circle too

It definately wouldn't be APC's Weak and Powerless :-D

Hatebreed delivers some damn heavy power music with a kickass head-banging beat...my v8 is fixing to go back in, so I think I'm going to have one of their songs as the stdk.

On a side note, I'm glad we're putting together this video -- Darius's was a huge hit, and I'm sure this will be too. It's about time that the world finds out what these Zs can do -- I know my hometown is fixing to

  9. if you want NO hassles, go eldebrock carb

Heh, that's why I have to get another carb -- the Edelbrock 600 on there is crap, and it's only a couple of months old. It had the a/f ratio so messed up that there was tons of white smoke would constantly pour out of the v8. I tried adjusting it, cleaning it...I even took it to a mechanic who's been working with those for over 30 years and he told me I'd be better off just buying a new one, although he never told me which brand.

I've always liked their Quadrajet before, but now after this I think I'm going to give Holley a shot. Sorry, I know my opinion is biased and I shouldn't let one bad apple ruin the rest of them, but I don't want to have to go through this crap again.

  10. I've had my eyes on the Holley 670 Street Avenger for a while...does that have a pretty good rep? I've always heard to go with Holley (mostly from my redneck cousins though) for their easy tuning and reliable quality. The only things is I'm more familiar with the Bosch EFI system on the Zs than carbs b/c I've never really dealt with them in the past. Thanks for the tip btw.

  11. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, but when I search the archives all of the matches just come up for Zs with the stock 6-bangers. I'm wondering if somebody could give me advice or at least direct me to a link to help me out here. I'm trying to find the pros and cons of TBI or a good carburetor for my sbc 350. I would like to stay with a carb, but if it's going to cause a lot of trouble in the long run then I might as well go with TBI.

If any of you have any links or can help please reply. And yes, I'm 100% sure this has been discussed before, I just can't seem to find it. Maybe I need to learn how to use the search function better

  12. Is it the cost of the ticket or the clean record you're worried about? If it's cost it's probably cheapest to do the defensive driving course, if record only then get a lawyer. Although I think if you do dd it keeps your record clear anyway.

The cost really isn't anything -- it's only $177 -- I would just like to keep it off of my record. I can go to defensive driving to get it taken off my record, but then that means that if I get caught speeding again within another year, that WOULD go on my record and jack up my insurance. I would like to go to court in hopes of the cop not showing up, but like I mention earlier, if he does I would be screwed and most likely I'd have to pay for dd, court fees, and the ticket.

I have been thinking about a lawyer...about how much do they charge for just a little case such as this?

BTW, those are some great stories! V8ZRACER260Z, you better consider yourself damn lucky to have escaped a 175+ ticket. That must've been a pretty awesome feeling, though  Thanks for sharing those -- I'm starting to regain hope again. :-)

  13. I just recieved a ticket from the good ole HP for doing 82 in a 60, and I'm contemplating if I should go to court for it or not. About the only hope that I would have is if the officer doesn't show up; if he does, I'm SOL. The only thing I can think of is just to try to extend the court date as far as I can, and about the only thing I have going for me is that I haven't had a speeding ticket in 3 years, and I'm a college student (late for class, thus the reason for my ticket). I think I'm going to buy a jammer -- I read it's not illegal in TX.

So anyways, I'm just curious as to how high of a speeding ticket YOU were able to get excused...maybe it'll give me some hope. Thanks

  14. One thing to remember if you were to find an acceptable way to reinforce the back of the car is, what happens to the rest of the car if the back does not "give" in a collision. I thought about doing the same thing at one time, but decided that in a limited range of collision speed, a dinged up rear panel will be a lot easier to fix than a straight panel that is behind two buckled quarterpanels that were bent because the rear panel didn't give any.

That's what I was thinking about. I guess my safest bet would be just to leave the rear bumper on. I guess I'll check it and see if I can push it in after I bleed the rear shocks. I have the MSA II fiberglass rear bumper, so maybe if I can shorten it down to where it won't stick out so far it would be a happy-medium. Thanks for your replies. Oh, and 80 lt1, I'm at college right now, but when I return home I'll post up some more pictures of that zx since they're on my harddrive.

  15. I would really like to shave the rear bumper on my zx to give it a cleaner look, much like this:

    shaved_bumper_zx.jpg

The only thing is that I don't want some jackass demoloshing my rear because he can't hit the brakes quick enough. Is there any way that I could weld some reinforcements behind the rear piece of metal (pretty much a hidden bumper) instead of having the big bulky bumper sticking out? I've seen many z's with a shaved rear and I think they look great, but I don't know if they did anything else to help support the rear of the car in case of a collision.

I searched around but I couldn't find anything related to this topic. I was debating between posting here or the chassis forum, so I apologize if this should've been posted there. Thanks for any help.

  16. The theory CO won't get in the passenger compartment if the exhaust exits behind the cab (trucks) or behind the rear axel (Cars).

In that same little 4-banger truck, I've had the tailpipe off before with the exhaust ending at the muffler outlet, which is about 3-4 feet passed the cab and that wouldn't pass inspection either.

I hate all of these damn laws; soon engines are going to be either electric or hydrogen-powered so why can't we at least enjoy the gasoline engines before they're extinct? Oh, well, I suppose if I just wait a couple more years I'll be able to do whatever I want with it...

Looks like I'm going to be buying a fuel cell
