Fast Floridian's 240Z Track Build
FastFloridian replied to FastFloridian's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Thanks guys. Making me feel confident in my set up. @74_5.0L_Z good info and impressive dyno on old engine, I’m hoping for something close when I’m done. What is your new engine, still a ford 302? Slight change to my diff setup. Didn’t do enough homework, but I think it’s actually going to come out better, just by dumb luck. I didn’t realize auto vs manual was a different sized pumkin on the 370Z. I bought an auto diff, and the wavetrac doesn’t fit an auto. Good news is I really wanted the 3.3 gearing and that only fits in the auto pumpkin (dumb luck). An OS Giken diff fits with the 3.3 gearing in an auto diff, so it looks like I’m going that route. A little more money, but the OS Giken is better for a track car anyway. -

Ordered the Apex track attack kit for the rear, and sent out my 370Z diff to be rebuilt with a wavetrac LSD. Going with the 3.3 gears. Did some more research and I was thinking about the gearing wrong. I’m sure it’s common sense to those with experience but I was including the overdrive gear in my analysis. For a track car, I learned you should gear it for redline in 4th on the longest straight, then you have overdrive if you need it. So going with the highlighted option below. Planning to work more on brakes this weekend, I unboxed my dual master cylinder set up, trying to understand how it all goes together and figure out plumbing. I have my new brake lines too, so hopefully replacing all the lines and get them plumbed to the master cylinders in the next few weeks. -

Got rotors and calipers on. A few minor challenges making it fit for the 240Z, but very happy how it came out. -

I was over in Orlando today for work and found a Z shop and picked up a used rear diff and axel. Was supposed to be 2 axels, but they stripped one getting it off an old Z. I’ll probably get the other one off eBay. I’ll be sending the diff to Z1 and getting it rebuilt with a wavetrac lsd and some new gears. -

For the track attack upper control arm plate the carriage bolts are a must because of their plate design, it completely covers the bolts, so no way to tighten. But some of the others are iffy. The two I broke, didn’t need to be carriage bolts, but it would have tight if they weren’t, and the tension rod bracket was probably needed for clearance to the bushing. Their brackets could have been designed to use regular bolts if they made them a little bigger, but that’s what they went with. Over all I’m pretty happy with it and how’s it’s coming together, but there are still some improvements they could make for easier installation. -

Got the subframe braces on, seemed simple but ran into some issues. Bolt to the subframe is too long, bottoming out in the brace, I cut the bolt down and used a spacer to help with alignment. Then tightening up to where it connects to tension arm bracket and snapped those bolts. Alignment from where I drilled the holes was off a little and I was over tightening them, ugh. Luckily I had two more bolts. Had to take the tension arm off to get one of the carriage bolts on. But it’s complete now, nice and sturdy. -

Took the day off to work on the car. Got the front suspension almost complete. Was going to do brakes, but I didn’t get the caliper bolts, thought they came in my BBK. Got those ordered, so should get them on next weekend. -

Jam nut for toe arm came in, dumb that it’s the only hardware that doesn’t come with the kit. New brake lines came in too. I might take this Friday off to finish up the suspension, and hopefully start on brakes. -

Got a few more things on today. This kit has tons of adjustability, just making some initial guesses on caster, bumpsteer, etc. a little bit of a puzzle with the hardware, some things you only needed if keeping stock subframe or other stock parts. I hope to have the rest installed next weekend. -

Here’s a few more pics of that plate with the impossible carriage bolts, I circled where they are. They definitely could have designed that better. -

Heat advisory today, and I believe it, damn it’s hot. Started off replacing studs with APR extended studs then attaching 370Z wheel bearings to the custom spindle, did all that in the AC. Then to the outside, unboxed all the front suspension and got subframe, new plate for control arms and upper control arms up. Stupid plate was near impossible to install. It’s perfectly shaped to frame, bolt holes don’t align when carriage bolts are up, and plate doesn’t align and fit on when carriage bolts are down. Took forever halfway adjusting it, having my dad tap carriage bolts from top while I’m holding and aligning from bottom. Nightmare, but finally got it on. Hopefully the rest will go smoother. Did I mention I’m exhausted -

Beautiful Z, it’s in great shape for an almost 50 year old car. I like those wheels too. -

All painted. Going to do another coat of semigloss for the engine bay, but frame/fenders are ready for suspension 😁 I’m hoping to start next weekend -

Got more goodies in, front and rear bad dog frame rails and a steering wheel mount for my Holley digital dash. Not sure if I’ll use it, but think it’s a viable option. -

Got on the wire wheel and went to town on the engine bay and front fender wells, prepping for paint. Need to wash it down and go over it one more time. Test painted a few spots. Also got the fender braces on, but not fully welded. Started getting a hole in the body panel, so decided to tac it and fully welded it later after some more practice, probably start practicing tig, need some gas first. -

Nice, cool to see you didn’t waste your time making that video. Probably running 325s on the rear, and maybe even all around (still a lot of time before I need to decide on that), I’ll need those wide fenders to fit all that rubber. -

Started cutting on the dash to see how it will fit, roll cage goes through it. Now I need to mock up the digital gauge display and see how it will fit. Displays is bigger than dash think it needs to Poké above dash as steering column looks to sit too close below. Too hot out, done for the day. -
