  1. What year/model is the Roadster (yes SHO-Z, I called it a roadster, I have owned one for over 30 years, and that is what we call them here!)

I assume it is a 1600 for that money (but who knows). If a 1600, a mod I have always wanted to do was stroke it to 2000 (either with a U20 crank with the snout cut off, or nissan made a 2000 version of the R16 for industrial applications aka forklifts), fit the 46mm su's from a 2000, and have a bit of a sleeper. This is not re-inventing the wheel, it has been done many times, the Aussies seem to do it often.

The SR20 is also a great option. My buddies run an NA SR20 from a Sentra in a Chumpcar 67 roadster, and it works really well. It was quite a bit of work, buy my buddy is a master fabricator, and lives for this kind of thing. The SR20 is set in longitudinally, and mated to an L-series 5-speed (more seat of the pants engineering) Another buddy here in Spokane runs one with a VG30, fun car (also built by same guy who put the SR20 in the Chumpcar).

Anyway, would like to hear more about the car, and some picture Alex. Obviously I have a very fond spot in my heart for Datsun ROADSTERS (sorry again, SHO-Z). Here is a picture of my car (the black one) with the Chumpcar at the Spokane 24 hour race last summer, the chumpcar's name is Bob, like racecar, same forwards and backwards! (the roadster won by 9 laps after starting with an 11 lap penalty)

That black one is a really nice example.:)

I drove my 68'2000 for many years as an errand runner or weekend twisty fun car. It had a newly rebuilt 2.0 in it and I added 240-Z massaged carbs. The factory 5-speed works great. I eventually trimmed out the rear 1/4's to run wide 15x10 Centerline wheels and it cornered like a champion.

Later on I installed a VG30et and five speed and life interrupted big-time. Now its up for sale in Missouri if anyone wants to pick up where I left off. I wanted to bring it out to Cali and finish her....but no space here.:(

Anyway...buy that thing and drive the wheels off of it. Mine never gave me any troubles of any kind. Although the soft top latches would come loose on hard transitions...but adjusting them took care of it.

  2. "Working on an S20 version"?

It was installed on the white and red box skyline one row over!

My favourite was the test ride in the Rocky Auto 1UZ-Powered Box Skyline! But that wasn't on the weekend... It was Wednesday after the show at their shop.

Whatcha know... Rocky Auto is a short drive from one of my customers!!!

I wouldn't worry about longevity on gear drives for Camshafts... It's FAR less than chain stretch in the same time period. I checked the backlash on their setup and it's TIGHT at room temperature. Far more accurate than ANY chain!

I'd look forward to the adaptation to the stock L-Gata SOHC configuration!

The Z build has considerable changes from the original 80's version. Talking with the booth guys, the oldest one there said the name IMMEDIATELY of the owner of the car in Okinawa that I'd ridden along with back in 85/86. They know where their stuff is, throwing doubt on the claims OS someone who claimed in the 90's to have gotten one of their heads for testing and porting...

Still a whizz-bang lookit me accessory IMO, but a MUCH IMPROVED whizz-bang lookit me accessory.

I had no Internet till now, so no post from me. I'll have to try to get the videos of the cars doing their parade laps, good sounds!

I spent a butt oaf of money on archival material at the show...

I completely forgot about it, until a frenzied e-mail exchange had me on too many planes, trains, and automobiles Friday evening for a meeting in Hiroshima... I arrive at NRT early Saturday morning and I'm greeted by Okamura-San with "Tony San, thank you for coming...Nostalgia Two Days this weekend -- you go?"

Damn those required entertainment expenses! :^P

Can we get an AMEN !?;)

  3. New info on the New TC24-B1Z

    http://speedhunters....-days-pt-2.aspx

It was then on to the OS Giken booth...and this is where you will have to bear with me as I have to nerd out big time now. What you see here is a complete L28-based engine that OS Giken will be offering from sometime this year. Based on the old TC24-B1 motor, now renamed TC24-B1Z, it uses an L28 block bored out to 89 mm and a lengthened 86 mm stroke thanks to the fully counter balanced forged crank and H-section connecting rods which boost capacity to 3,208 cc. Up top is a completely revised TC24 twin cam 24-valve head. Other cool details include a cam gear timing conversion, which eliminates the L28's chain drive. In fact OS Giken was working on a similar limited edition gear conversion for the Nissan S20 engine a few years back when I dropped by their factory. If you recall I posted a few pictures of it here, as you can see there are no chains to be seen! This conversion eliminates the slack chain-based timing systems have, not to mention the potential for failure which becomes very important if you consider that this L28 engine here revs to 10,000 rpm, 1,000 rpm up from the old engine which was built in 1980. Compression ratio is up from 11:1 to 11.5:1. This display unit was running big Weber carbs with carbon fiber funnels, but sports injection can also be offered. And on to the numbers, this monster kicks out, 420HP at 9,000 rpm and 289 lb/ft of torque at 8,000 rpm. Fit this to an S30, Hakosuka or a KenMary and you have yourself nothing short of JDM vintage perfection!

They have better pics and far more info. But you heard it first from Kali on HybridZ.org :D

You've got THAT right. What an amazing sound that engine would make too ........10k rpm !! Oh yeah. If they can R&D a sound box type exhaust-(think Ferrari)....my knees' would weaken once that screamed by,lol.

  4. Sorry for the damage to such a sharp looking Z. I've aggressively driven the Angeles Crest area quite abit in my Z4 coupe and it is fun-(albeit unforgiving)...even though some areas were burned out so bad.

The fact that your seat looks tweaked requires more inspection.....good chance it is just a tweaked seat-back or rail.

I have restored over 30 S30's over the years and I can say for sure....although your chassis can be straightened and repaired....I would personally find a straight unmolested body and research good shops to get it stripped, sandblasted, etch primed and ready to swap over all your already restored bits. Also a great time to dial in all the other parts that were needed prior to the damage.

Looking forward to a great turn-out for you !B)

  5. Drove my red 70' daily for about 11 years and continued quite abit even after I bought a Maxima. Kept the Z and also added another 260 and ended up driving all 3 cars in my business as chase cars for picking up customers salon serviced cars.

It was nice to hear from the customers that they liked the look of the vintage Z's parked at their home/business driveways. They were in really nice shape however and I kept them VERY clean and shiny with some cool wheels.

As far as making them a reliable car for daily commutes....all I did was to run synthetic fluids on a monthly inspection of the carbs and other mechanical bits. They were VERY easy to maintain and I was NEVER stranded or in need of a tow.

Comfort wise....I did add Recaro seats to the 70' and Momo steering wheels to both along with better pedals and shift knobs. Even later power windows and a turbo engine and trans. It never ends, lol. I still have them today....some decades later.B)

  6. 41 years Dennis !!?? Thats what I'm talking about !B)

Make that 41 fun filled years. I bought the Z upon returning to the States after living in the Philippines for a year and a half. I sold my Pontiac Grand Prix there and had a pocket full of cash. At the time, demand was so high that there was a nine month waiting list for Zs unless you wanted to "buy" your way to the top of the waiting list. I paid about $600 over sticker (something that was unheard of in those days) and got the car.

    Dennis

I see your in a SoCal desert area......which desert ? I was just buzzing through Anza Borrego and Borrego Springs yesterday. Driving up through Victorville today.

  7. I bought my 240Z off the showroom floor in 1971. It sits in my driveway today and continues to provide driving pleasure with little fuss.

    Dennis

41 years Dennis !!?? Thats what I'm talking about !B)

Vinny, October 2014 will mark 30 for my 73z, which I purchased with a fist full of cash I squirreled away while serving in the Army in Korea-early 80's.

Mark, you and I must be closer in age than I realized .

Good lord! .. I wish I could have had a Z since it was brand new! That way there would be no surprises lurking inside of it!

    Not always true Marcus,lol;)

  8. Just curious as to how many Hybrid Z members have owned the same Z over 30 years like me ? Well actually...going on 34+ years . I bought mine with lawn mowing/snow shoveling money when I was 15 years old.-( now 49,lol).

I've had a red 70' since before my first drivers test....whew !

I've owned about 30 S30's over the years but somehow I always kept the red 70' in the stable.

    Anybody else??B)

  9. Out with the old and in with the new... I was expecting them to be really twitchy but they feel fine. Granted I haven't stabbed them yet, but normal street driving seems fine so far.

    6859849385_698b4ec561_b.jpg

Just wondering if there was much of a weight difference from stock-(one way or the other ) ??

  10. Bummer! I grew up listening to the roar bounce off our back yard mountains ( Monrovia ). It was so nice to have a strip like Irwindale Raceway so close.

It's sad, but a fact of life, drag strips are quickly dying out. I'm glad I had the opportunity to grow up in the good ol days.

No doubt Joel......I get moved out here to enjoy the Car Culture and they are closing them down at several venues.....even the open forum types-( Super Car Sundays gets banned all the time and has to move). I hope this trend doesn't get any traction.-(pun intended).

  11. Thought this might appeal to someone out there. I did an episode of "My Ride Rules" for the Speed Channel and some of the other contestants were over at my house when we were filming. They saw my Z build in the garage and said "Hey, can you start it up. I'd love to hear it." YOU ASKED FOR IT............ The episode is going to be on in April or there abouts. I drove my '67 Shelby GT 500. I'll post when I know the exact date of when it's going to be on if anyone cares to watch it. It was a lot of fun.

Almost had an F1 rev sound when in the garage....awesome !!

  12. Who is Big Phil and why is he back?

Hahaha...................good to see you online Phil.......I thought maybe you went to lock-up since your eyes were getting much more red in your vids, lol. I'm considering the 30 as well.........my 26 has been sitting an a rolling cart for 5 years or more now, SINFUL I tell ya' !

  13. The car was completed today, and I’m very pleased with the finished product. The plan is to dyno tune the car tomorrow, and I’ll upload the graphs as soon as we finish. The car sounds beastly in person, I wish you all could see it in person.

Special thanks again to corporate sponsors: BF Goodrich Tires, Tial Motorsports, Borg Warner, Abel Racing, Je Pistons, Eagle Rods, Tomei USA, and many others along the way for your help with the vehicle.

As promised, here is the debut video of the new setup:

    http://videos.street...orts_181811.htm

Niceness ....sounds ready to lay it down hard !

  14. Remember kids, keep your seatbelts tight! ;)

Hahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !! Oh lordy I laughed hard at that ....thanks ! Someone played a mean trick on them with loose belts, lol.

Reminds me of a new pup learning how to ride in a cars front seat.................those stops are a real Bitty, lol.

  15. WOw....lots to catch up on reading here. Great progress and I'm digging your stable builds too ! I would really enjoy a meet next time I'm down south in S.D. if your up to it. I just towed my S30 1800 miles from the midwest to Laguna. Brought the RB26 and drivetrain along too.

  16. 6eeaf9a3.jpg This is my old set-up and is pretty typical I've found.Flowed off throttle very smooth and never had anything but very cool intake temps under long duty cycles. BOV was mounted below one of the elbows prior to the IC.

One thing to note.....when I had the same configuration in Aluminum pipe it heat soaked temps quite a bit higher....but when in Stainless, it all but went away.

I made an air tight seal all the way around the space between the radiator and IC due to having dual fans pulling through the IC and pushing back through the radiator.

  17. Well, it depends on your "Guru" I guess. Some claim that the hot side is better. Why run hot air through the intercooler if you don't have to? But as Six_Shooter indicated, most of the opinions are based on conjecture, so just put it where ever it makes you happy.

While I tend to agree with Nigel......the S30 can house such a large efficient IC that the choice of placement may be a mute point for us. Guys that have little to no room might benefit in efficiency with mounted close to the compressor so not to tax the IC minutely even.

  18. Vince, nice to see you on hbz again!

Thanks David ! Been traveling for what seems like forever ! Made the final move to SoCal over this past Christmas.....wrong time of year for doing it I've found, lol.

Those of you who opted for the V-band clamp arrangement's will be soooo glad you did. All my recent turbo stuff has them and it makes everything easier.

  19. Hey TechZ, how much you trying to get for that l28et?

Not sure as of yet, its still all in the car. I do my own fabrication and welding etc. and I'm twisted on letting all that work go. I may never get the time to do one up like this again. But you know what you've got available funds -wise and what the combined bits can go for I'm sure. Feel free to PM me an offer......all I can say is ???? :).

I may just pull her and let it all go so I can do the awaiting RB26...it WOULD open up some space in the shop.
