  1. Maybe it would be cool if there were sections in the for sale section.

Like turbo parts, suspenion, brakes, drivertrain. Its irritating when your looking for some brake parts and theres nothing but motor parts that you need to read through.

Just an idea. maybe a bad one? good one?

Good suggestion, but that is what the search function is for. Try searching specifically in the parts for sale thread and you should get your results.

  2. Is the link for photo upload gone or am I having a senior moment?

I think there has been some glitches with the image host software. You could still upload your pictures to an external image host such as tinypic and use the code to post pictures until this gets resolved.

  3. We have been using the stock VB layout from when we first started using VB and with our 10 year anniversary coming up now may be a good time to have something created for us.

Anyways, we would need about 2 or 3 really nice pics of Z's, some OMFG motor shots and some dash, brakes and suspension pics. Something simple, not flashy or distracting just something to give us the appearance of a car site focused on Z's

we are going to do a little make over of the site.

I know you guys have some awesome projects and we need the pictures for something special we are planning for HybridZ.

So post up your best examples of:

    1. Your finest example of the Zcar. We need quality specimens and the best 2 or 3 will get used.

    2. Some "OMFG" engine pictures that represent what this site is about. Extreme modifications to mild...we want your best examples.

    3. Pictures of your modified dashes and even the best examples of stock.

    4. Brakes and suspension pictures are also needed. So, you guessed it! Your best examples are needed.

Keep in mind we are looking for the things that represent HybridZ and our mission As soon as we get your pictures here we will post up a poll to vote on the best pictures. Yep! That's right, you get to have a say in how your home gets decorated.

Thank you for your help. :)

This post will be closed and voting will start on 1/29/10

    Post them pictures!

  4. Sounds Nice! You're lucky to have a 010/020 block. That's the primo stock block to have.

Does it have a lifter clicking or is that the exhaust or something?

    jt

    Thanks!!

That sound was one (or two) of the lifters, I left them on the looser side for the break in. I will adjust them using a procedure where I don't have to run the engine later. ;)

  5.

This was my first time swaping a sbc cam. I left the 081 heads stock on my 350, but put new extreme push rods, 270h cam, and lifters. So, you can run a .470 lift cam on stock heads. (WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT...but I did it.) I spent many weeks looking for that answer ans now I have the experience for my self. I also could not find a good sound clip of this special grind cam online- so now there is one....enjoy!

  6. Here is the promised video. :)

Just so you know, I am running 305 (081) heads on my 350 and I am very happy with the results. I read way too many posts on way too many forums saying yes...no...yes..no....and I was like what the hell?? So I did this for my own knowledge and experience.

    So, let's sum this up:

First Myth: you can't run 305 heads on a 350......

Can you run 305 heads on your 350? = YES! And you can get a decent flow with the right heads, stay away from the swirl port heads. Use the 081 non-swirl type. I would have prefered to used some 350 after market heads or maybe even vortecs....but I had these heads so I used them. 350 heads will out flow and out perform any 305 heads anyday, but if that is what you got...them use them.

Be carefull about your compression ratio, I have stock 12.5cc- 4 valve relief dished pistons and with 58cc 305 heads I am at about 9.74:1 to 10.00:1 compression so I will be running premium fuel. Flat top pistons will make your compression ratio bump beyond that and you may be buying expensive gas to drive your rig....so look out for that.

Next myth: max lift for stock heads is .450 or ?????.....

Can you run a .470 lift cam on stock heads?? = YES! but you must make sure you look for coil binding and clearance between the spring retainer and valve guide before you run the motor. DO NOT REV your motor the moon!! Stock springs especially worn ones will not handle the ramping at all, and you will have valve float. I recommend using the recommended set-up by your cam manufacturer.

I went through many weeks of looking for a simple answer online and never found a strait answer. I hope this information helps the next person who reads this post.

  7. This is a neat little tool that almost works like a desktop dyno. I used it and this was my read out......

  8. I got bored this weekend so I decided to swap in my cam. :D The cam is a Comp Cams Magnum series 270H 112LSA with the 4/7 swap. This was actually easier than I thought it would be. I have no coil bind or issues with my rocker travel. The springs are new springs so will work with this cam until I can get my vortecs.

    Here are the pics.

This picture was a big help!

I was happy to see this under the timing cover. :)

Here is the old lifter...it looks like someone has replaced them along with the cam because the cam looks to be in great shape and these are definitely Comp Cams lifters.

Here is the old timing set, I am looking for a gear drive set up.

It was late so I was not going to rev the motor at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes...I will do this later today. :) Video to follow of course!

  9. Ok so i installed a new stereo in my 280zx and now the stereo in accesories stay on including the fuel pump. It doesnt happen all the time but it happens alot. Has anybody had this problem and know how to fix it? thanks!!

Pull out the stereo and start over. I have had this same thing happen to me in my 240z and I ended up pulling out a bunch of bare ended wires from other crap the PO had under the dash and never cleaned them up.

If this is a new issue since you put the stereo in then that is where I would start.....sounds like a hot wire getting grounded.

  10. Honestly if you look at the outboard side of the head where the head bolt holes are and you see the scalloped outline, that is indicative of the lightweight castings, all of which are not very desireable. I'm not sure where you got the flow numbers but that is on the good side and they max out at .500 lift anyway.

Typically, the price of gaskets, time involved, etc, etc, it's better to wait and get better heads and do it right the first time, rather than take it apart to do it all over again IMO.

Hope it works out for you.

    Good point.

I have no problem pulling my motor apart when I get new heads. The gaskets are cheap and it takes about 6 hours to do the job. Not a huge investment in my eyes. The learning experience is worth more to me than a few dollars and little bit of time spent...besides this is a daddy and daughter project. My 15 yo daughter get's to learn how to tear down an sbc that way.

If you ever have seen any of my other projects you would know that I typically take my engine apart and put it back together several times during the time I own them.

I appreciate your oppinion and understand your point. :)

  11. I used silicone gasket maker for it. Let it set up for 2 days before I tried it. It ran but it wasnt right. Then after a few days of starting it just stopped.

Ok...try picking up a new intake/exhaust manifold gasket at your local parts store. They are pretty cheap. :)

Get the gasket maker off, I made that mistake once and had the same issues, that is why I asked. Make sure your carb gaskets are new as well.

  12. My dad & I were just out there playing with the timing and checking the float levels. Also made sure we are getting spark to all the plugs. How would I go about checking for a vacuum leak? Thanks for the help & ideas guys.

Most people use starting fluid...but that only really works when you have it running. I am betting you have a vac leak based on the throttle symptoms you were describing. You didn't use any sealer on the gasket did you?? And you did use new gaskets, right?

  13. here you go.

this is how to calculate compression with out a website.

    717cc for the cylinder

12cc for the piston (standard smogger gm dish with 4 relief)

4cc for the deck height (estimate -0.020" in the hole)

8cc for the head gasket (0.040" felpro)

    58cc for the head

    (717 + 12 + 4 + 8 + 58) / (12 + 4 + 8 + 58)= (717 + 82)/82 = 9.74

    9.74:1 cr

need to use a cam in the 220 degree at 0.050" range with this compression (270 advertised). will also like a 2600-2800 stall and 3.55-3.73 gear. (depending on tire size).

Now that is the help I was looking for. Thank you very much! I am sure this info will help others out as well.

I just happen to have the Comp Cams 270h with 112 LSA 224/224 duration and a 4/7 swap. Cool! :)
