I can not answer your question but help me with this question. What is the CV's and what do they look like. I hav got to go buy a rear end this week.

We had a lot of problems with heating. When we drove the car on the hiway the temp would run 230. We never did find out why. But here is how we solved the problem. http://waskomtexas.com/zcar/re_car/engine_cooling.html You do not need a passwork.

The automatic transmission turbo has a 3.54, a standard non-turbo has a 3.9. I do not know what a std. turbo has. http://www.waskomtexas.com/zcar Do a search on this site and you will find a lot of information on the LSD and rear end ratios.

Thanks for the information. I did the math on the speed at 3000 RPM and 3.36 ratio would only increase my speed 3 or 4 MPH. I guess I will just get another 3.54.

We are looking for information conserning a post made by Long Rod 327 Z it was "posted March 06, 2002 04:16 PM". The comment "before I put the 3.23 in there for some driveability and eat up some LS-1 cars!!!" caught my attention. Would you or anyone who may have information about a rear end ratio of 3.23 to 1. We are looking for a ratio that would lower our engine RPM for highway driving. After running a search for "3.23" we found that he may have been talking about someother car having that ratio. Does any one know of a place to buy a rear end or ring and pinion for our Z that is in the 3.08 to 3.54?

I know where there are 2 or 3 300ZX's. I will check on the year to see if they had the rear end that you are looking for. I am looking for a ratio around 3.2 to 1. Is there such an animal. I would be interested in new gears.

We have a 1982 280ZX with a Chev 350 engine, Turbo400 trans and a very loud rear end. The car sold new as a turbo with an automatic transmission. We jacked up the rear of the car and turned the rear wheels together and counted the turns of the drive shaft. It seems that the rear end is a 3.54 to 1 ratio. There was a very noticable clack in the rear end when we turned the tires to feel tha slack. The tires are Low profile Pirelli tires (215/50 front, 225/50 rear) on Lugaro 15" wheels. It is 76" around the rear tire. We also measured around an original tire and it was 78". That is not enough to make the car so low geared. When we are going 60 MPH the engine is turning 3000 RPM. We also have a 1982 280ZX standard transmission car. We did the samething with it and it seems to have a 3.9 to 1 ratio 200R. We have a 1980 car with an automatic transmission but the rear end is a 180R so it will not work. It looks like we are going to have to have the rear end rebuilt to get rid of the noise. We could pickup a rear end at a salvage but it might be noisey also. My question is can we get a ring and pinion that is in the 3.2 to 1 ratio?

I forgot, the car that we are working on is a 2+2. I thought that an automatic would have a 3.9 to 1 rear end.

We pulled a rear end out of a 1980 Z with an auto trans today thinking that it was an R200. However, from looking at the manual pictures it seems to be a R180. I thought all of the 280ZX's had R200's. Our rear end is making a bad noise and we need to swap it out. It's also too low geared, haven't checked the ratio yet.

He is right if you realy want to do the job you can do it. There are a number of people in California that have made the switch. I don't want to see you spend most of your money and get stuck and discouraged. Some of you people in California help this guy out. Find you a Z clup in your area. Here is a club in Southern Calf. http://www.socalz.org/

I have seen several for sale in that price range. You might buy one that is complete or neavly complete. It's good that you want to learn but your are taking a pretty big bite for the first project.

I don't think that I want the tunnel ram. I could start with cam, Holly carb and manifold. However, the engine is still a guess without opening it up. At this point I would rather drive what I have till I can get another motor built that I know what I have in it.

I do not know what the "tunnel ram", I guess the 6-71 Weiand Kit is the blower that it had before I bought the car. What is the tunnel ram? I do not think that I would like twin carbs.

From what information we got from you all last week it seems that when we build an engine for our car we will have to decide if we are going to use a blower or not before we build the engine. Our goal is to have a car that we can drive on the street with and A/C. We would like to keep the idle under 1000 RPM. It would be nice to burn regular gas but not necessary. We would like the have some "WOW" when the hood is raised. The previous owner of our car does not know any history on the engine. So, we are going to start with another engine that we have and build from there. This will allow us to continue to drive the car as it is. This rebuild may take a while because of the cost, goodby $2500.00 budget. Below is pictures of our car,you do not need a password: http://www.waskomtexas.com/zcar You can see a picture of an engine with a blower sent to me by Mike kZ at this web site also. What horse power could we expect from the following engines? Take the other block that we have and bore it .030 over, a new steel crank, Holly 4 barrel 650 CFM, 9.5 to 1 compression, a cam that will allow an idle under 1000 RPM, Dart heads and we are using the exaust headers that we have on the car. Take the other block that we have and bore it .030 over, a new steel crank, Holly 4 barrel 650 CFM, 7.5 to 1 compression, Holly low profile blower, a cam that will allow an idle under 1000 RPM, Dart heads and we are using the exaust headers that we have on the car. If we go with a blower could we use the original heads and get about the same horse power?

Tell me more about this LSD rear end. I am about to swap out the rear end in my 1982 Z. http://www.waskomtexas.com/zcar/ You don't need a password, just click "OK'. My rear end is making a lot of noise. What is the ratio of the LSD and will it swwap out with the one that I have in the car? If so how much modifications?
-
Mike Kz, did you use the A/C compresssor off of a 280ZX engine. I have bought a nother compressor but was looking at the z compressor and it looked like it would work. That way I would not have to change hose connections. Going back to a blower sounds real interesting. How much horse power could I expect?

HELP! Is this a good price for an LS1 engine?

A salvage priced a LT1, 700R4, computer and all the wiring fot $1200.00, But it had 100,000 on it. It is in a rear wrecked Buick Roadmster. -
This must be a game. I don't wish to play.

I checked the compression on one cyl and it had 150 PSI. That doesn't sound like a low compression engine to me, am I wrong?
-
I can not get any information on the engine, except doing a compression check. Also the engine is rattling, I tought it was lifters but am now thinking that it is something else now. Still need to do a compression check. Going back to a blower might be the way to go but can I still run the A/C compressor and does a blower run all of the time?
-
When I am driving with the engine speed at 3000 RPM, I am doing 60 MPH. The rear end is stock, as best I can tell it is a 3.545 to 1 ratio. I have one out of a car with a standard transmission that is 3.900 to 1. If I am figuring right it will drop my engine speed at 60 MPH to 2726 RPM. Is this correct, dosen't seem like much.
-
Another question ! We ahve a complete 1982 280ZX parts car with a standard transmission. Could we use the standard z transmission with a rebuilt 350 engine. would it blot to the 350 and would it take the new power?

We are shooting for about the same thing. Join in the thread at: 350 not good enough.
