  1. Any reason you chose to bring the rear supports all the way to the back instead of tying them into the strut towers?

Both the instructions and the NHRA rule book show the rear bars going all the way back. I don't know if the bends in the rear

bars are technically legal, but I've seen many like this pass Tech at the track.

  2. Mike,

I installed a set of lap belts from my '72 Nova. The retractors sit on top of the floor. They do prevent the seat from moving all the way back, but no more than the back brace of the roll bar. I think the shoulder strap from the Nova will work as well, but I am missing a couple of pieces.

  3. I had a local shop do the install, Power Rods in Gilroy.

He said he had people giving him a bad time about working

on a foreign car. Then he'd pop the hood and show them the

    engine :D .

I think the car has the HP to hit the high 10's. I just need

to work on the 60' times. I've got a R200 LSD on the way that

    should help :D .

  4. Thanks for the advice, Grumpy. The springs are fresh, K-motion 1.55" doubles w/damper, 200 lbs seat pressure.

Fuel pressure is set at 7.5 PSI and is steady for the whole 1/4.

Going with the powerglide, with the 1.82 low gear, has made things difficult. I need the low rear gears at the

starting line, but then run out of RPM before the finish.

Do you think it's possible to make the same horsepower that I have now, but at a lower RPM range, with just

a cam change? Then maybe with 4.88 rear gears I could pick up some MPH and not lose much in the first 60'?

    Thanks again,

    Don

  5. The Track 1's are supposed to be bolt-ons. They come with CNC matched ports, blended bowls, etc.

Here's what Lunati says about the cam...

ROLLER, Super Gas/Super Comp with 350-406 engine. Broad power band.

    Ultimate bracket cam. 4400-7800

...Seems to me it should be still going strong, even past the finish line.

  6. The Track 1 heads are stock, except for the resurfacing.

The cam card says to install with intake center line at 102

to make the cam 4 degrees advanced.

The ignition system is sound. MSD7AL, billet dist, Blaster 3 coil.

So, maybe I've reached the limits of the stock Track 1's? That's

kind of discouraging, expensive to remedy.

    Thanks for the replies.

  7. Bore: 4.040

    Stroke: 3.48

    Rod: 6.0

Piston: Manley Pro Series hollow dome(13:1 w/64cc head)

Heads: Brodix Track 1, 215cc intake, 67cc chamber(resurfaced twice, so less than 67cc)

Cam: Lunati solid roller, .640/.645 lift, 308/316 duration(276/284@.050), 106 LS,

    installed 4 deg advanced.

    Intake: Edelbrock Super Victor

    Carb: Holley HP4150 950CFM

Exhaust: Hedman 1 3/4" primaries, Flowmaster collectors, no mufflers.

    Timing: fixed, initial=total=38 degrees BTDC

Fuel: 114 octane, Union 76 race gas

Trans: powerglide, 1.82 low, 8" converter, 5000 RPM stall

Rear: Ford 9", 5.14 gears, 30" tall slicks

    Weight: 3125 lbs w/driver

    Best ET: 10.71

    Best MPH: 125

    Best 60': 1.46

The problem I'm having is the engine feels like it runs out of steam by 7000 RPM.

I cross the finish line at about 7400 to 7500 RPM. The best ET is attained by shifting

at 6500 to 6600 RPM. Any more than that and the car slows down.

Shouldn't this combo pull strong to 7500 RPM? What am I missing?

    Thanks,

    Don

  8. Mike,

Mickey Thompson makes some Pro Street type front tires that might work for

you? They look like they have alot more tread than a drag tire. I switched

from Beetle tires to drag tires in front, but my Nova is strickly for the track.

I run 9.00x30 slicks on 15x8 wheels in the rear. They rub a little if I turn onto

    the return road too fast.

Your car has a nice stance.

  9. Davy,

The car is a '72 with a 357 ci small block and a powerglide. The rear end is

a Ford 9" with 5.14:1 gears, a mini spool, and stock 28 spline axles. The

trans was done by TCI and has a trans brake and 8" converter, 5,000 RPM

stall. The car is all steel, but is pretty much stripped. It weighs 2950 lbs,

3125 lbs with me in it.

I made 4 passes today and the car did pretty well. I launched on the foot

brake for the first 2 passes and managed a 10.87 at 123.5 MPH with a 60'

time of 1.558. The next 2 passes, I used the trans brake and launched at

around 4,000 RPM. The car ran a best of 10.74 at 123.74 with a 60' time

of 1.472. :D My buddy said it lifted the front tires about 6". :D:D

The worst part about the day was that Alston was CLOSED. I wasn't able

to pick up my roll bar. I talked to them on Wednesday and they said

I could pick it up today. Oh well, I have a back-up plan.

Going to Test & Tune at Sacramento Raceway tomorrow. Shooting for high 10's. :burnout:

It's been 3 years since I last ran the car. Best run was 10.71 at 125 MPH.

    Wish me luck...

    Don

PS: I'm picking up a roll bar for the V8Z from Alston tomorrow. :D

  11. Chad,

I think a manual trans has the potential to go quicker since it's more efficient than a auto trans.

My best time to date was with a stock converter. I did not have a traction problem with that combo.

Since then, I switched to a 2200 RPM converter and then had traction problems. As soon as get a

roll bar installed, I'll try for a better time. I think I can get my 60' time down around 1.60.

    Don
