According to the Summit site, it's 65 ft lbs.

It could be oil getting sucked in the intake ports from under the manifold. You should be able to tell by the smell if it's oil or water.
Why did you need to change the head gaskets?

Miles,
Try adding a bottle of Redline water wetter. It's only $6 and it might be enough to keep the car from boiling over. I've got the exact same cooling system as yours in my '72 240z with a ~450HP 383ci SBC and it has never boiled over.
I wrapped my Hooker block hugger headers after I noticed my wiring harness on the right side frame rail was melting from the heat. I've put well over 20,000 miles on the car in the last 19 months and the headers are holding up, so far.

I drive mine every day and I'll admit that it's not the most civilized car I could be driving. It's hard to steer, It's loud, the whole car shakes at idle, but every time I get on the freeway or drop a gear or two to pass somebody it puts a big smile on my face and makes it all worth it.

I've got a pair of Centerline Thrusters: 15x8, 4 on 4.5, with 5" back spacing. I've got drag radials mounted on them, 235/60-15. I'm running coilovers and they fit great. I don't think this size will fit without the coilovers.

That's what I thought until I crushed the line against the firewallGlad I only have to do this once.when removing the trans. I had to replace the line before
installing the new trans.

Thanks, guys. I feel a little better now. I've been kicking myself
for not finding the problem before that much damage was done.

This is not Z related, I hope nobody minds. I finally figured out why my '72 Nova drag race car
sounded like it was running on 6 cylinders, it was. The engine is a 350 SBC with Brodix
Track-1 heads.
Do you think this head can be repaired?
Thanks,

Thanks again, Mike. That did the trick.
After I got it loose from the steering column, I opened it up, cleaned, and lubed it.
It works great now!

Thanks, Mike. I'll give that a try.

My ignition switch seized up the other day. I had to remove the
rear electrical part of the switch and turn it with a screw driver to
get the car started.
How do I remove the keyed part of the switch?
Thanks,

B&M makes a kit for this swap that includes a torque arm mount.
Summit PN: BMM-30299 $80

Zank,
Nice times! Especially for such a low buck engine build.
I think the stock gears in a '77 280z were 3.55's. If you are building it for the street
I would use an overdrive auto for sure.

I used Summit PN: SUM-G3922. It fit perfectly.

That spreadsheet comes up with 3.18 seconds 0-60 for my car.
Thanks for posting the link, Scottie.

That sucks! I couldn't believe how straight your car WAS.

Maybe you could grind the coating off where you want the bung. Weld the bung on. Then drill the hole out through the opening in the bung. Would'nt that keep the inside coating away from the weld?
Regards,
Don
PS: I've got one on my uncoated exhaust and it has been a big help in tuning the carb.

I like the 3.55's, not too high, not too low. With the .67 overdrive and 26" tires, it's about 2500 RPM at 80 MPH. The car hooks up easily at the drag strip and has run a best of 11.58 @ 121 MPH on drag radials.

Jon,
I've bought two R200's from Zbarn, both 3.55 gears. They both came with side stubs and the 2.25" intput flange. I told them on the phone it was going in a '72 240Z.
Have fun!

Bob,
You can have the original R180, mustache bar, and driveshaft from my '72. Just come pick them up in Gilroy. The diff was working fine when I swapped it for a R200.

I used a hole saw to make a hole near the sending unit for a -8 bulkhead fitting. I bent a piece of 1/2" AL tubing to reach the bottom/rear of the tank. The bulkhead fitting is sealed with a fiber washer on the inside and epoxy on the outside. No welding required!

Judging from the picture on their web site, it looks like it would cause excessive wear on the side gears and thrust washers.

Summit Racing sells a balancer for the 400 Chevy that is 6.6" o.d. P/N SUM-B64266. You can use the 168 tooth flywheel if you use the right starter. One option is a gear reduction starter from a '95(I think) Chevy 1/2 ton truck, 5.7L.

John,
There's a ring that holds the sending unit in place. You need to turn it, counter clockwise I think, to remove the ring. There are some tabs on the ring. Use a screw driver and a hammer to tap against the tabs. It comes apart and goes back together pretty easily.

Your "mid temp blues" could be caused by the choke releasing before the engine is warm enough. As for your bog, check the choke pull-off. It regulates the opening of the secondary air valve.
Happy tuning,
Don

According to the table on zhome.com, it would have a R200 with 3.545 gears.
