  1. Use Methanol. You may be able to get some at a pharmacy or go to the parts place and buy some DRYGAS. Used to use methyl alcahol and cotton balls to was our hands after pine nut hunting, it works well.
  2. I took my car for a run up the street the other day and the suspension is very loud and clanky. I am in the process of fixing some of that but as I was looking at things I see chunks of wood between the coils on the back springs!!!!??? (Its kind of funny because I've had the car since May and never noticed) Anyway, what would the purpose of this be?? To try and fix a sag problem (the car does not seem to sag)???? To try and stiffen the suspension??? So the car will make a cool sound that no other car makes??? I have no idea why someone would do this. Since the wood in indented in a U shape from the springs the wood is loose enough that they move around but tight enough that I cannot pull them out by hand. I'm confused by this one.
  3. I paid $300 for my 260 and it sound like the 240 your looking is a way better deal. Either buy it or tell me where it is.
  4. I like the look of the trim but I would leave the trim off before I pull the windows out!!! I did put the window in the hatch by myself, but found someone to help with the windshield. Both were fairly difficult but it is much easier with two people.
  5. Are you doing the windshield or back window? I am starting on the back window. Find a thin hook shaped tool so the tip goes under the edge of the trim The paint can opener had a hooked tip but it would slip and hit the paint or the window so I didn't want to use it any more. I could not find anything of a hard plastic to use. And I agree that it would be easier with two people. I will try some WD-40. Most installers that I have seen doing glass on Zs install the stainless trim before putting glass into vehicle. This is something I saw debated here a little and thought about it quite a bit. The glass guy that was "supposed" to put this in for me strongly discouraged that idea - he claimed that if anything went wrong it would destroy the trim. After getting the window in I can see why he said that because the molding does a fair amount of moving around before setting into place but I think in hind sight it would probably work that way.
  6. I installed my windows a couple weeks ago and today I spent some time trying to put in the chrome trim around the window. Getting one side in is easy but getting the other edge under the molding is not an easy task. I tried a paint can opener because of the hooked edge on it and found it to be dangerous for the paint and the window. Then I tried a plastic scraper - it worked really well for getting the first edge in but not real well for the other side. Tried pulling the molding flap up with my fingers and that got to be painful. Then I tried the weed wacker line like I used to get the windows in and that works ok. It does not get the molding up all the way over the trim piece but if you work it with the plastic scraper and pull on the molding some with your fingers eventually it will go in all the way. All I got done is one piece of trim along the top of the back window and that took quite a while. Does anyone have a better way to put those trim pieces in???
  7. Got my car started today for the first time!!! I have been trying to get it started off and on for a week or so and thought it was an electrical problem. Turns out that instead of a no spark problem it was a no power to the electric fuel pump problem. The P.O. had it jury rigged and I had undone the wire to it during the dismantle process. (I guess that is an electrical problem). All I need to do now is get the lights working and I should be able to start driving it!!! The rest is just minor details and phase one will be completed. Phase two is the suspension and brakes (that should start soon). Phase three will be the V8 (maybe next year). Phase four will be the wide body(probably two years). Now to start collecting parts for phase two.
  8. That 280zx looks dangerous. When the door is open the bottom corner hangs down in the knee whack area. OUCH!!
  9. I really like the pictures and ideas being posted here, thanks for sharing the ideas. I end up doing my ideas on paper because I do not have photo shop, but some of them are similar to what you have done, especially with the staggared stripe down the side. I really like that. I used to think it would look good to paint it with a lot of line to make it look like graph paper It is also interesting to see these PS'd picture to see the different personalities that come from the car - amazing. For your idea of "mean" looking I like the last one posted in orange with the black stripe. My first thought was Starsky and Hutch but the more I look at it the more I like it and the change of wheels really sets it off. I believe there was a recent post here about a car on e-bay that had a two tone paint job with the stripe going from one back corner to the oposite front corner - it looked very nice. I recently had my car painted by a friend - he did it in his garage, it really sucks though, body work I did is poor at best. The only things that saves me from total embarasment it knowing it is a temporary paint job - it only has to last until I do the YZ / Subtle Z body kit. In the mean time I am very interested in paint scheme options.
  10. Seems like a lot of you get on the internet at work. I am working at my family's business now and being on the internet while at work is not a problem. About a year ago I was managing a medical clinic and I got on the internet a little bit for personal things there but was apprehensive about doing it too much. It is nice to be part of a board that is so active but I wonder sometimes how many here could get busted for being on the internet while at work??? Just curious.
  11. I have an SKS and an Enfield (in .308) and like them both but shoot the SKS more. There seems to be a lot more "stuff" available for the SKS but I have left mine alone except for a pad to lengthen the stock for my long arms. I would like to get the sporterized stock for the Enfield sometime. The problem with the .308 Enfield is that no one makes a scope mount for it. I don't know what the difference is between the .308 and the .303 that they scope won't fit the .308????? I got the SKS back before they were "bad" and it was only about $90. It also has the bayonet instead of the goofy spike thingy. My Enfield was about $120. Both are pretty good for some inexpensive fun but I would go for the SKS first. Blackpowder is also fun for plinking.
  12. What did you use to cover the hole in the hatch???
  13. I installed the windshield last night. It is much harder to do than the glass in the hatch but still it was not that bad. I had help this time and I don't think I could have gotten it in without the help. You really need someone to push on the glass from the outside while pulling the "zip cord" from the inside. One tip. After the glass is installed use the handle side of a plastic putty knife and push along the edges between the glass and the gasket to smooth out any waves or whoop de doos in the gasket. Worked like a charm. Can't wait for the glass guy to call to make another appointment
  14. I contacted the one and only local glass guy to come an put my back window and the windshield in for me. He quoted me $60 an hour and said it would take 3 hours to install. I got him down to two hours if I install the trim... I was still kind of choking on that but said ok. He was supposed to show up Saturday morning so I was dinking with the car trying to get the doors aligned.....again .....whilst waiting for the guy. Anyway, about 11 o'clock he still has not shown, so I get the back glass and the gasket.... found some lawn trimmer line and a paint can opener, you know... the tools of professionals.... the next thing you know the window is in. It would have been easier with two people but it wasn't that hard to do. I plan on doing the windshield in the next day or two and saving $120. I am really having fun working on the car... I am doing a lot of things I have never done before. (though I could be a lot better at body work)
  15. I guess I will have to take up cussing and swearing While I was working on this, for about two hours, I got to wondering how many employees they had at the Datsun factory just to align windows and doors! I was also thinking that I may have to buy a lucky rabbits foot, maybe that will work.
  16. Anyone know any good tricks for aligning windows so they roll up and down correctly?? Also for the door latch mechanism?? I get it close but just not quite right and then mess it all up again. Very frustrating. Thanks
  17. You can do as stated above, or, do the cheap way out like I do. Just pile everything in the back. That way, what you need will always be at the bottom. Every time you need something, you get to paw thru it all and really get it mixed up. When you can't find something, you get to go buy new stuff!! Works for me! Almost the same thing I did except I bought a car that someone else tore apart and piled in the back.
  18. If they didn't want that table why didn't they just throw it away??!?!?
  19. When I was 16 I got arrested for speeding between Carson City and Reno. I don't know how fast I was going - the needle was pegged on a 125 mph speedometer. May not have been so bad except there were a bunch of kids in the car with me - it was really dumb to do that. The highway patrolman wrote the ticket for 100+. Spent a few hours at juvenile hall waiting for my parents to pick me up. Interesting place. I ended up doing a week of work crew - I will never forget that experience. I wasn't the brightest kid but the other kids on the work crew were really stupid and I swore I would never end up in a place like that again. The car I was in was an Olds station wagon with a 455 in it. Another time I was driving my 71 Z down to Vegas and was doing about 90 mph along with a long line of other traffic. A highway patrolman drove by from the other direction with his arm out the window waving at us to slow down. We did until he was out of sight then picked it back up again. I average almost 90 mph from Reno to Vegas and got 30 mpg on the trip. Z's are great.
  20. Isn't landau an imitation leather???? PM me an address and I will send an envelope. Thanks
  21. I tore apart my heater system to clean and repaint - before I put it back together I want to test the heater core to be sure it does not leak. What is the correct way to do that?? I am thinking of hooking my compressor up to the heater core, pumping it up to about 10psi and dunking it in water to check for air bubbles. Another question. One of the baffles inside the heater housing, I think it is the one to redirect air to the defroster, is padded on both sides (at least it is supposed to be). On one side of the baffle the padding has come off (the side where the mouse built its nest ). Can't find the padding in the MSA or Victoria catalogs - any suggestions on what to use to replace the padding??? Thanks
  22. Renegade Hybrids does some neat stuff. As an added benefit, it really pisses off the Porsche crowd
  23. Wheelman, It is exactly those "goobers" that fill me with dread. The problem is that the other side of the isle does not provide much comfort. We are still dealing with the lesser of two evils. My decisions are not based on just my gut feelings. I also look at issues and have some strong opinions about them, but the words from candidates cannot be trusted. ( they also do not have much control of all those issues that they talk about - Presidents have far less control for things than they get blamed for) Just look at Kerry when he speaks and you can see, and feel from him, that he does not have a clue. The words coming out of both sides of his mouth dont help him any but even without the words he is in over his head.
  24. From what I can remember from the article it was exactly because the 2+2 is longer that they thought it would make a better looking convertible. I guess the extra length of the car would make it look "sleek" instead of "squaty". Also, the rear seat was not used. The body work would come up right behind the front seats. I do think that convertible z's tend to look a little too short and was very interested in seeing the 2+2 convertible to see how much of a difference it makes.
