I also have another question that i havent been able to find the answer to...
Howmuch does the complete 240sx rear subframe weigh?
-
What about graphite foam? Though, it looks like most studies involving graphite foam heat exhangers are all air/water...but, some showed efficiencies of 10,000 w/m-k or more.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody.
I dont have a top pic, but after talking to a turbo vendor, he offered the suggestion of changing the exhaust housing. My current housing is designed for the dodge 2500...Bullseye power makes a stainless housing that is significantly narrower. Between this and moving the entire unit forward on a long manifold by about 2 inches, i think i can manage.
Should i be concerned about the compressor housing being close to the spark plug wires/distributor?
And veritech, i would say you've been more spoiled than i have!!
For reference, here's a pic of the dodge holset housing vs. the bullseye power housing:
-
Man...i've been spoiled by <$500 holsets.
-
I've chosen 425 horsepower because i'm obsessed with big numbers and excessively powered cars. 425 would give me roughly 1 horsepower per 5 pounds laden weight...
I dont ever plan to drag race this thing...it'll see some track time though, at thunderhill or sears point.
Do you have a 2871 or disco potato on hand that you could measure for me?
The appeal of the 2871 is the dual ball bearing...How much bigger is the gt30r?
-
Here it is...the turbo is so big that A: It hits the wheel arch (one piece front end similar to viper) B: The exhaust housing is right up against the firewall. After talking to a couple manifold guys, they told me getting a smaller turbo was the only way i could work with my setup.
-
Kilten one : Yes, i'm pretty sure i need a custom one. I talked to a buddy of mine who makes custom manifolds for ka/sr swaps into 510's, and he told me the only way i can make it work would be to get a smaller turbo The size of the Hx35 limits what i can do with it.
-
Hey everybody. I'm in the midst of doing a ka turbo swap into my triumph spitfire. My original plan included a holset hx35 turbo, but after mounting it on the engine and sitting the engine in the car, i've realied there is no way i can make it work because the physical size of the turbo severely limits my manifold and placement options.
So i come to you guys looking for the smallest turbo possible that'll support around 425 horsepower to the wheels. A couple people have suggested to me the Garrett 2871? model, but the $1100 pricetag makes my wallet cringe. Any suggestions would be great. It doesnt matter if it's a t3 or t4 flange, as the final manifold hasn't been made yet.
Thanks.

2001-2002 S54 MRoadsters imported to the USA: 1200
Performance specs - 4.5 seconds 0-60 and 13.1 in the quarter
This data is very close in comparison to the late great C5 I owned' date=' 13.2 0-60 and 13.2 in the quarter.
[/quote']
If my vette ran a 13.2 0-60, i would've gotten rid of it too...
But i feel your pain on being shunned...either they hate you, or they tell you about why their car is soo much better than yours while they're drinking your beer at your party.

The engine is a twin cam ka from an s13. It has a completely stock head with just a valve job and minor porting. It sits on an entirely forged bottom end, including 8.8:1 turbo pistons. IT also has a cometic head gasket. Fuel management consists of a z32 MAF, 650CC injectors, and a RS Enthalpy tune. I expect this motor to make no less than 350rwhp in street trim.
The turbo is a Holset HX35 from a '99 dodge 2500. I have a smaller turbine housing that'll allow me faster spool up time and the use of an external wastegate.
Cruez- There's so much support for the KA into 510's, it's amazing. I can even get you the crossmember relatively cheap if you're interested.
-
I found some free time to get my engine in there tonight. Please excuse the paper towels.
It looks like i'm going to need a custom turbo manifold, (still looking for somebody to make me one).
I'm pretty happy with how much of the engine sits behind the front axle.
Still waiting to pay for my daily driver repair before i have more money for this project, but i'm doing all the little stuff in the meantime.
-
They're for strengthening. We had to cut part of the factory bit out to make clearance for the engine. I think the 200sx engine was the ca-18det, but i might be wrong.
-
Just some updated pics on the ka turbo spitfire. Just got the car back from having the (chromoly) bar put in, as well as engine mounts made.
-
Would these parts hold up for auto-x on a 1900 pound car?
-
What would the cost/ease of fabrication be for somebody make me something like this, minus the black piece in between?
Anybody know of somebody i could talk to about it?

Perhaps this video was inspiration for the new VW Rabbit commercial

I would love to see the pile of totalled Isuzu Gemini it took to make this.
I was thinkin the same thing! especially when they were going down the stairs on 2 wheels.
Heres another one that shares some of the same scenes, but is a lot longer. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-152534067332271854

I was looking at that g-force reverse rotation tranny for a project of mine, because i liked the stupid power those engines made. And then i found out the price of the tranny, $5500 ! Cool concept though.
The more i look at that integra swap, the more i think it's fake. But who knows..
-
Do you have any more details on that?

srgunz-I visit that site on a regular basis, it's an awesome reference. For a while there was guy named Rick Gibson who had a single turbo 13b motor making in excess of 420 horsepower and 380tq, but his site seems to have disappeared. Have you seen it?
Tannji - I'm trying to retain the driveability of the spit, so yes, i can imagine the perils of welded doors. I plan on keeping this car for a while, and giving it a serious beating, so it makes sense for me to go over the top, rather than under it and be fixing stuff all the time. I talked to a couple guys about the 2.3 ford, but i have such a network of 240sx friends, that parts are relatively easy for me to get, and tech support is abundant.
As far as the front suspension goes, i planned on a custom brake kit, and tubular adjustable control arms with a set of coilovers.
edit: found ric gibson's website, talk about humbling!

Davyz - I've got plans for a narrowed and lightened Jag irs going in there. I dont think the stock rear end is good for much over 120 or 130 hp (granted, there are exceptions). Besides, who want's that unpredictable transverse leaf spring in there anyway? However, i'll be keeping the rear end stock while i break in the motor.
Edit: and yes, they do have a tin-like essence to them. Feeling like your car is going to fall apart when you punch it adds to the thrill and seat of your pants feeling!

Hey guys, i need an opinion. My 1968 triumph spitfire is going to be back from the shop early next week. It's having a custom chromoly roll cage installed, as well as mounts for a ka24de (or sr20de). I have a built ka24de (turbo) engine, expected to put out 350-375 horsepower at the wheels, torque being close to the same.
The stock spitfire weighs 1760 lbs, and when all is said and done, i'm going to be about 100 pounds over that. Do you guys think that 350 rwhp is too much in a >1860lb car? Maybe not too much power, but usable power? I would like to do some autocrossing, but more than anything, have fun with it. Any opinions would be great.
