    Limited-slip

Nope. The 300ZX Turbo in 87.5 was the first SD in North America. Other countries may differ, I don't know.

    T56 What's what

Thure, I have a GM'd Tremec behind my two-piece seal 327. I bought it from http://darkhorseperformance.com . It's a TR-3550, with a 10 spline 1-1/16" diamater input shaft. I believe he uses an older style Ford input shaft to make it work with a GM motor, and supplies a bushing for the GM crank to work with th Ford pilot diameter. He also machines down the bearing retainer to the GM T-5 diameter. So I'd think you could get a Ford T-5 and swap to an older input shaft (not sure of the years) and have the bearing retainer machined and be good to go. The speedo connection is Ford however, so have a speedo cable made for the Ford end or get an adapter. I have info on this on my site, second link down on the right of the home page. 3. Jeff, in MD, I'd never consider taking a post-1976 6 cylinder car and putting a V8 in it for just these reasons. I'd do the L28T up in the 280ZXT or find a 240, 260Z, or early 280Z and do the V8. I know which I'd prefer, but to each his own. MD is a enviro-Nazi state, if anyone out of state is wondering. Stupid rules that don't really get the worst polluters (big trucks, factories, old junky cars) but harp on the newer than 76 cars for those tiny bits over that they might be emitting. The freaking enviro-Nazis are barking up all the wrong trees trying to make things greener. Not as bad as NJ and other states where they have state congresspeople trying to enact junker laws that allow big polluting industrial companies to buy and junk older cars (even ones that run clean) to offset their pollution. Off my soapbox, sorry. [This message has been edited by pparaska (edited April 18, 2001).]
  4. Ross sent me that URL a while ago. One issue is that you'll need some precision resistors or an assortment of non-precision ones to choose from. The resistance values are pretty tight, and a tolerance of the normal 10% for non-precision resistors will make it tough to hit the rpm to the multiple of 100 that you might want. That said, I'm going to at least make up resistor that I can hook in parallel to the 6000 rpm one I have to make the total give a 3000 rpm rev limit, for valet and wife use , if ever needed. I'm also considering a similar setup (multiple resistors in parallel, in or out of the circuit with switches) for starting line and down-the-track rev limit settings. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  5. Jim, that was in the latest Chevy High Performance. They said that the restrictor was in the line just below where the master fitting is. They drilled it out to 1/8". They weren't sure if the earlier F-body cars had this, but the LS-1 does.
  6. Drax, I agree, if the contact patch is still in the same place relative to the spindle, etc. the bearings will see the same loads. If the bolt-on spacer is of good quality with good fasteners, I would worry about sturctural integrity. But using plain spacers that slip on is a problem, since you put shear loads on the studs at the outboard edge of the spacer, and this is "stressing" on the studs. 1/4" or maybe 1/2" isn't too bad, but 1" slip on spacers and long studs would give me the willies. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  7. Jim, Ross has a ZX, not a Z, so things are different for fitting alternators. You should run an 8 gage from the alternator output to the battery cable side of the solenoid - with a 12 gage fusible link at the alternator. Also hook the white/red wire up as it serves the fusebox and the amp gage. If you're worried about pulling too much current from the stock wiring and that white/red wire, then just don't grab any power from the dash harness or what comes from it to the front of the car. Use fusible links and fuses from the output of the alternator or at the battery cable connection on the Ford solenoid to power high current items like the cooling fan, headlights, ignition, electric choke, etc. Relays, Relays, Relays . As for the Amp gage, I suggest removing it and bolting the wires to it together with a brass screw and nut. They go bad anyway and disable the car. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  8. Jim, the other locations for the shifter on the Tremec 5spd (TR-3550 and TKO) are way forward of the rear position that is still 1.5" forward of the T-5 shifter location. I can't think of a setup that would use it, besides some kind of WAY setback engine. The Tremec 5spd is a big pig - proabbly darn close in size and weight to the T-56. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  9. That tab shouldn't be needed if the bolt or stud from the motor mount is there. That said, I'd grind off the tab and slot the hole, if you have enough room. If not enough room, then add (weld) some plate on top of the horn that extends down/inward farther to provide another hold down lower/inward and take the plate thickness out of the spacer. Gusset the sides of the plate to the sides of the horn. Heck, you could weld a steel spacer to the horn that didn't extend up as high as the existing one, to provide a place for the "tab" if you wanted to keep it. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  10. Dan, after a bit of sleuthing on that site, I found a picture of your car at: http://www.zccne.addr.com/Rides/Dan-Baldwin2.jpg So to show it, you just put directly after it, no spaces anywhere. If you have other pictures, you can put them on one of the photo hosting sites or your own web space through your ISP (if you have any) and reference them the same way and use those tags around the URL to show them in a post. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages

    T56 What's what

You're right - use the search button at the top of the forum pages to search for old posts on this stuff. But to try to answer a few: Use the T-56 that was mated to the LT1 engines, not the LS1. Also watch the early T-56 (can't remember the year) as it was not as strong (but maybe strong enough?). Cost will be somewhat higher for the trans alone, but it's when you get to buying the special flywheel and clutch parts for a two-piece crank engine that it goes nuts. Lonehdrider has some recent info on how to do this cheap, I believe. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  12. Lone, others, sorry, I like math - especially when I can apply it to hotrodding! At least all we are talking about is Algebra and Trigonometry . We could be whipping out variational calculus and Reimann Space geometry (the stuff Einstein used in his theory for General Relativity). But wait, if you guys keep upping the ante and building faster cars, the speed may be close enough to light speed that we need to start worrying about that
  13. You can put a 280Z tach in and it will be very difficult t osee the difference. The 280Z tach is needed if going to HEI. The JTR manual (see links page) shows how to do this. You can also get a T-5 out of a Camaro or Firebird and not have to do a thing to the console. 14. Oh, I've been here before. The large diameter shoulder that is visible in the picture is too "long". I machined them down in a crude lathe setup I made out of a sump pump motor . I shortened the large diameter shoulder by about half the original length as I remember. Even still, it was tough getting those parts in there. I used some very thin shim stock to guide the strut housing in between the cut down bushings. It sure seems that alot of the aftermarket parts I buy need this kind of tweaking. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  15. Cool! Interestng how we came up with different locations for the spot caliper. I hung mine on the bottom (mostly out of necessity for using the existing caliper bracket) and yours is on top. I like the front brake bracket as well - especially the engine turning . ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  16. Kevin, If you're interested in the answer to "What's a cosine?", I suggest the following Short Course: http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/java/trig To get straight to the answer: http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/java/trig/cosines.html or http://www.ies.co.jp/math/java/trig/cosbox/cosbox.html The book is: "Mechanics of Machines, Advanced Theory and Examples," Hannah, J. and Stephens, R.C., Edward Arnold Publishers Ltd, 41 Bedford Square, London WC1B3DQ, ISBN: 0 7131 3254 X Note that there are surely other books or places on the internet that have this equation. This is the kinematic equation for a slider-crank mechanism. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  17. Lone, I found a molded heater hose that is quite long and has a 90 bend at one end. Worked fairly well using one for each pipe. I have the part number if anyone is interested, but it's at home. I also have part numbers for molded radiator hoses to use with the Camaro radiator JTR recommends, on my web site under http://members.home.net/pparaska/cooling.htm ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages [This message has been edited by pparaska (edited April 16, 2001).]

  19. Thanks Drew. Glad I didn't coat the short pieces of pipe and mufflers. I'll probably make up another set of short pipes/bends/flanges to try a set of the 55s. I see from their site http://www.goravin.com/home.html that the 77s have a 22 inch case - I don't think I can fit that, as the Hemi Super Turbo is a 20 inch case, and that was tight. I'd probably go with the 16" 55s. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  20. That's interesting Ross. I hope the new core I put in holds up. Let us know if you find that PN. I tried a 280ZX fan motor with the 240Z cage (the fan "blade" part) in a 240Z box. I was underwelmed, to say the least. Not sure why it turned out like that, but the position of the fan relative to the wall of the box has alot to do with output, as well as the seal at the input of the cage in the center of the cage.
  21. Hey, Owen, I know where you're coming from. I spend a great deal of my free time (usually carved out of my sleep budget) in car oriented stuff, after the job, and family are taken care of. I don't watch but an hour of TV a week, don't follow sports, etc. The people at work think it's weird that I'd want to build a car and that I've been doing it for so long. I think they're weird (not really, but you know what I mean) for so closely following incredibly overpaid sports player's careers and the games they play. What's Mikelly's motto? "I will not be a spectator in the sport of life" or some such? I feel much the same way - I don't have desire or time to follow sports - I'd rather be interacting with the world using my two hands. Yeah, to them, it probably appears to be a sickness. But it looks the same way to me as I look out from the rubber room of my garage . Everybodies reality is a bit different. Some of ours are just a bit farther from the norm. Signing off (No! Get away! I don't like the straight jacket! Please, not that again! )
  22. Drew, how are the Ravin's for sound volume and tonal quality? I like the sound of the Dynomax Super Turbo (Hemi's) on my car, but if the Ravin is similar in tone but a bit quieter, I'd be interested. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
  23. Kevin, I'll work on the spreadsheet again tonight before 1am - it might go better if I'm awake fully . cos = cosine of the angle in parentheses sqrt = square root *sin = times the Sine of the angle in parentheses ( * is a symbol for the multiplication operation in many programming languages and spreadsheets. I left that operator out of the first equation. My bad for bad consistency.) ^2 is "raise the thing to the left to the 2nd power" or "squared". ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
