  1. I am still having issues understanding how a custom crankshaft like the FSAE one is actually made? To get the main journals which are in line with the axis of rotation doesn't seam THAT hard, albeit a crank is long so maybe it needs support on both ends? But for the connecting rod journals, how do they machine them? Do they create a bracket to offset the entire crank by the length of the stroke, thus making it rotate around the connection rod journals? This seems like it would vibrate at any significant speed, unless the crank is quite light. Additionally it doesn't seem like this practice would be very time efficient. Thoughts?

  2. Did anyone ever give the lip difference between the RB and RB-R? I thought the RB-R is supposed to have a deeper lip, and less of a build up on the back side. Did anyone ever show pics of the mock up wheels like they did on the RB model? Were there any clearance issues? I have been doing a lot of reading but not finding anything. Thanks.

The lip on the front of the RB-R is around 2.5" and is 3" on the rear. The RB is 3" all around. There is no build up of material on the back of the RB-R mounting face, the dish is consumed by the deep recession of the mounting face/spokes. The RB on the other hand has a significant amount of material on the back of its mounting surface. So, in reality, the RB has a deeper lip than the RB-R on the front. It looks 'correct' though, compared to the RB in my opinion. The RB looks more like it was meant for a FWD car (positive offset). That being said, they both look great in my opinion and I would be happy with either. :)

The mock up wheels were put on Gollum's car back in post #830, check it out! I do not believe there were any clearance issues, but some people have had issues with rubbing on the way to full lock between the front of the fender and the tire. I have not been able to replicate this issue or even get really near to it at all, so I cannot comment on how/why/what is happening. Maybe someone who has this issue can chime in?

There is no difference between the RB and the RB-R though when it comes to width, diameter, offset, etc. Thus the RB fits just as well as the RB-R and visa verse. Hope that helps!

  3. At UC Davis I feel there are a lot of these kinds of 'engineers'. Fortunately I like to spend my entire budget on hobbies and learning how to actually do things, so far I am pretty sure 95% of what I have learned in college has been through my hobbies. Hmmm.

  4. Looks great to me! It looks like we used the same U-Joint too! I went a little different with mine as I already had holes drilled for Alsil's X-Member. Additionally after doing some math, I realized the stock shaft was pretty much the perfect length once cut and welded tot he new U-Jooint. Consequently I just reused the stock shaft to save work rewelding at the rack joint. We used an oil impregnated bushing to bump the OD of the shaft up at the rod end, it is keyed to prevent motion of the shaft up and down its axis.

  5. Just to clear up some questions people have been asking me:

    1. The front wheels in RGM and Bronze have been in the warehouse for half a week or so, but the rears (9.5") are arriving this coming Tuesday or Wednesday, at that time the representative will start shipping those colors. Some other colors may go out right away too, but the rest will arrive ~10 days later.

    2. The price is the same. Rota is not making money on this sell, probably losing it (I am unclear here), but the representative wants to honor the price of $750 shipped for us within the mainland USA. I do very much suspect that the price of these wheels will be more, not sure how much though, after this group buy. I do not know the pricing for special setups such as 9.5" x 4, that is a question for the represenative (kimcosmic@juno.com).

    3. Do not send your money now! Wait for the representative to contact you.

Thanks guys! We are very close. :)

  6. Considering the price really isn't cheaper than standard prices, probably as long as they have wheels. I think it's the sheer fact that we got the wheels in the first place that was the benefit of the group buy.

IIRC, the money order was sent off to the name of Kim's business. I forget what it is but I think it's further back in the thread.

The group buy was mainly for wheels in the first place, but I have a rather strong suspicion that this price won't last long past the completion of this group buy.

As to the money order info... post #866, I will copy it below. :)

As for 'where to send the money', WizardBlack has alerted me that he has been told to send his money order to:

    28301 Industrial Blvd.

    Suite V

    Hayward, CA 94545

Made out to 'Cosmic Marketing Group" with "ATTN: Kim" as well.

  7. When I was checking out the setups and fitment, I determined that 4.9" of BS would probably rub the spring perches, are you running copilovers or is it just really really close? Also at full lock I was anticipating issues unless a 205 or 215 was used. The rears should fit no problem as that is a very forgiving area.

  8. sorry if I ask few answered questions but I will do more reading of this thread. What is the final price for 17x9F 17x9.5R, who do I contact for payment, and when will royal gold be available? Also, I know that there will be about 0.5' of gap if you're using Wide ZG flares(still looks nice) but what about regular flare? thanks a lot if I'm asking again.

No worries. The final price is $750 shipped within the mainland USA. I BELIEVE that it may be possible to go for $700 if you pay with a money order, but that was a while back and I would not be surprised if the economy has shifted a smidgen.

For payment/ordering please email the North American Rota Rep. at kimcosmic@juno.com. He will be able to assist you, do let him know you are with the HybridZ group buy and whether or not you would like the RB or the RB-R style. For the basic difference between these two, consult post #433. Additionally pictures of the two have been posted later in this thread.

Royal Gold will not be made available on initial shipment from what I hear so expect it to arrive at the warehouse a week or two after the start of October. Shipping is typically prompt from what I understand once the wheels actually arrive stateside.

The .5" gap is in addition to whatever gap 280ZForce is running on his red 280z. All in all the gap may be more than .5" with wide ZG's. Off the top of my head I do not remember exactly how much farther inwards the rubber will stick on a stock ZG flare... I believe it is about a 1/4" or flush.

Hope that helps! If you need anything else feel free to PM or post here.

  9. I don,t see the advantage of spending $200 on an oil filter you need to clean every so often when there ARE decent throw away designs, that work just fine for under $10 each

Interesting. Some of them pack 10 micron absolute material in them though. I am wondering if that will make a significant difference. That is to say essentially no particles larger than 10 micron will pass through the mesh. There are some SAE papers out there I read a while ago that pointed at 5-20 micron particles as the greatest cause of wear in the motor. I am wondering basically about the possible effectivity of something like this vs. a conventional setup. Not so much the value/dollar. Thanks for your replies! :)

  10. We are talking about 35 year old cars here as well. It bothers me that they are rubbing even statically. Of corse triming of the stock lower valance was to be expected, but it should of worked just fine with that style of air dam. Please let me know if you guys figure anything out in that regard. Sorry guys. :? Spent a lot of time trying to figure out just the right offset and tire size, hope a quick fix becomes aparent.

If you want wheels in Australia ...check the Vic Z Car site http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2761.0.html $320 a wheel delivered anywhere in Australia .. haven't arrived yet.. and any color as long as you want "steel grey".. not sure what color that is

This is an option for the Australian buyers. Some pros. and cons as I see them...

Con: More expensive no color choice

    Pro: Shipment should be quicker

  11. What car, what suspension, what bumper for your testing?

Used a 72' 240z with Tokico Illuminas, coilovers, and bumpsteer spacers (to correct the angle of the control arms because statically it sits rather low). The bumper on this car was the stock lower valance. There was obvious interference when the valance starts to wrap down about 1" in (as to be expected), but not at the valance to fender meeting point where an air dam would typically go straight down.

The second car was a 76' 280z I do believe, with 'stock' suspension and the air dam pictured below. The first tests provided a good amount of clearance. The later test was quite close, but I do not believe there was interference. On the flip side some damage had become the front suspension and the arms were also completely flat statically. I will have to talk to Nate to understand better why the hubs were pushed out.

Wizard, if you are to mount the air dam flush to the fender, is the problem corrected?

Anyone who is having rubbing issues at the fender/airdam meeting point, please do post photos.

If this is still going to go through, count me in for a set!

This is still going on, if you are interested send me a PM with your email address and I shall send you ordering information.
