z31 differential

okay so i have been here researching, most of it i haven't been able to find. I didn't want to bother with this post but now im just lost and i want to come clear.

I plan on running a 1984 z31 differential along with its axles on a 72 240z. Now i know that the 240z 4 lug stub axles are not strong enough for 450hp and i want to run Arizona Z Car 5 lug brake kit So here comes my questions.

which stub axle must i use to work with this conversion?

Would this stub axle work with Arizona Z Car 5 lug brake kit?

I would think you need to read up on this thread http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/49194-differential-cv-lsd-hp-torque-r160-r180-r200-r230-diff-mount/ which I think it would clear up some of your question.

 

thanks ill make sure i read it.

as for six shooter.. arent the 280z stub axle 4 lug... because im worried that 4 lug wont be strong enough once i get my sr20 for which ill try to put out no more then 450hp. and if you do the flanges let me know how much you would sell them for.

Yes... if you have the money to buy them. Keep looking and you'll find cheaper alternative. What I had done in the past was using the early 1984-86 300zx turbo (hub, caliber, flange, axles) everything from it and swapped it over to my friend 280zx. Just an FYI for cheap.

Now how hard would that conversion be if i wanted that on a 240z?

I'm pretty sure you can adapt the 300zx front hubs to a 240z, the rear hubs are a different story, I'm pretty sure you'll need custom ones.

 

Also, Modern Motorsports doesn't exactly exist anymore, so don't plan your build around those products.

 

However, I don't think it's lug bolts themselves that break if you're drag launching, it's the stub axle itself.

 

Are you going to turn this into a drag car where you will have slicks and a super sticky track surface? If not, then you probably don't need billet stubs for anything other than piece of mind. I mean, how much torque does the SR20 make anyway, even a highly modified one like you plan on building?

Dang what happened to them :unsure: and no my plans are simple, just a daily driver that i would take out to the track every now and then.

so your saying that the 4 lugs can hold up just not the stub axle?

 

Six shooter- that seems straight forward but yes what did you do for the rear?

The rear I used re-drilled 240Z axles. (Yes I know the 280Z axles have more splines, blah blah blah...)

 

I then retained the Maxima caliper bracket (I had these for the 280ZX disc swap already), used Z31 caliper hangers, 280ZX calipers (which were already on the car from the 280ZX disc swap), and the Z31 rotor which I turned down from 290mm to 280mm. I was going to make a new bracket to move the caliper out that extra 10mm, but I was running out of time to get it together, and turning down the rotor was the quickest solution. I'm still thinking that I'll make new brackets in the winter and run the 290mm discs.

I already had the R200 and Z31 CV swap done last year, with some custom made adapters. I need to make another set for a friend of mine.

You pretty much had everything set. and nice weld, very clean. so since modern motorsports don't really exist anymore, where can i get those flanges? since im now going to run the 280z stub axle.

Awesome. I was thinkin about making some/getting some made like the first picture. A strictly bolt on affair would be quite nice in case I decide to change to a different style diff with different cv joints.

 

However, if someone wants to whip me up some of those I'd be quite happy too :D
