ciavola Posted June 3, 2012 Share Posted June 3, 2012 (edited) I am reassembling the rear suspention, I have torqued the nuts to 180 pounds, one of the nuts sits farther one the shaft then the other. I thought I remembered them sitting farther in on the shaft. Does this seem right or could it be when they pressed the bearing they went in crooked? Lazeum Posted June 3, 2012 Share Posted June 3, 2012 Something looks not ok. I would disassemble and check again. The 2 second picture looks quite right, not the first one. I would check proper bearing position (nut should press them tight against shoulder with torque), threads condition on spindle, inner bores of knuckle assembly, etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

NewZed Posted June 4, 2012 Share Posted June 4, 2012 Measure from inner flange to outer flange on each side. The measurement should be the same. If there's a problem with the one with the shallow nut, it will be wider. Why is your thread titled "Half shaft issues" but you're discussing axles and companion flanges? NewZed Posted June 4, 2012 Share Posted June 4, 2012 (edited) Maybe you got your "Distance Pieces" swapped. Check out this picture (for 1976 but probably the same) or the FSM, Rear Axle section, if you have it. The letter on the piece has to match the letter on the housing. By the way, if they were swapped, then the other side might have damaged bearings now. If I understand the drawings right, a short distance piece will allow the full 180 ft-lbs of pressure on the inner race, across the ball bearings to the outer race. ciavola Posted June 4, 2012 Author Share Posted June 4, 2012 I swapped axels and then companion flanges. the problem followed the axle, I confirmed both spacers are the same and marked the same. I would assume this rules out the inner bearing since that stay in the hub since that didnt move. the only thing I didnt check is the axle lenth itself but I would think they have to be the same.
