winstonusmc
Been working on my interior for a couple weeks now. The 70s dark blue has to go. I have a sewn carpet kit and about half of the plastic rear paneling on order. The carpet is pretty ratty and very disco era. In some places its just glued on another layer of carpet. The headliner and a pillars will get re done in vinyl if I have the guts to do it. If not, I am going to have the upholstery shop do it. All in all, it will be black within the next couple months. The door panels will get the treatment later, and the seats will be last. On thing I could have ordered was the kick panels. They were $22 a piece raw. Then I would have to cover them or leave them painted black, which I think they were stock. I will cover these with better textured vinyl. I bought some hardboard from Lowes and cut out a new one to see how it fits. The fit seems to be what I want, way better than the originals. I also installed some Subi window motors and freshened up the window seals so they role up normal. The passenger door had a crack in the top rear causing the door panel to pinch the window and push it off track. Now it roles up straight. Needs a little more adjustment and it will be perfect. winstonusmc
Decided to move the engine back 2 inches to make more room in the front for accessory belts. I also am tired of the shifter hitting the center console and not being centered in the hole. First step was to build a jig with the old R32 mounts. The jig was designed to allow the bottom to be shifted 2 or 2.5 inches. Then mock them up in CAD (cardboard aided design) Left Mount: Right Mount: Then Transfer to metal, 3/16 plate steel: A comparison in between the 240z mount and the partially fabbed new mount. Note the drop is greater to correct the pinion angle. Done and painted Here is how everything sits now. The head is about 2 1/4 inches from the firewall. ~KnuckleDuster~
"CAD" I like that hah. Looks good further back.
winstonusmc
Got everything back together tonight. I had to shorten the exhaust to match. Took it for a drive and the shifter is in a much more reachable position. Still need to purchase a 240sx lower shift boot to seal up the trans tunnel. I kinda threw the old crusty vinyl shift boot in there and it is amazing how much sound it removes from that area. Oh, I cant claim the "CAD" comment. Its from Bad Obsession Motorsports. Project Binky is worth the watch!

kidistight
I saw the first post you made down in what looked to be the SPAWAR parking lot and had to follow this thread. I was born in San Diego so I couldn't pass up following this thread. I anxiously look forward to see what you have next planned.
winstonusmc
It was across the road from SPAWAR, MCRD San Diego. I left there about two years ago. The Datsun misses Cali, it suffers with rust.
winstonusmc
So a long time since an update. Big life changes require big changes in modification. I recently moved to 6000ft of elevation after my retirement from the Marine Corps. So the dusty environment and elevation would do for the trusty ITB. So enter an RB25DET. Megasquirt is gone too, time for a real ECU, an Elite 2500. Currently the engine has a Chinese turbo, a Freddy intake, and bunch of fabrication and parts from my previous L28ET. Still sitting on my custom engine mounts. I rebuilt the transmission due to a bad bearing. I also half installed a T3 rear conversion with Z32 brakes and R200. I also mounted a narrowed WRX steering rack for power steering and installed a Vintage Air HVAC with the RB compressor Edited May 29, 2019 by winstonusmc Update
~KnuckleDuster~
Congratulations on your retirement. Plenty of time to spend with the Z now. Looks like Colorado.
winstonusmc
Yes, it's Colorado Springs. I don't have a house yet, so my car lives in an enclosed car trailer in storage. Good thing I can unload it whenever I want. Next, now that I have the Haltech, is electronic throttle. This allows for cruise control and rev matching. This is the photo if my trailer which doubles as my garage. My driveshaft was out because the shop that made it absolutely could not balance it. A shop out here in Colorado Springs successfully balanced it for me. I also need to get it on a Dyno to see how bad 83% atmosphere is for horsepower. winstonusmc
Another thing I haven't shown is I replaced all the carpet and rear panels.
~KnuckleDuster~
Nice, I thought that mountain range looked familiar. I used to frequent the Army base there for work quite often.
Max_S
Did you swap the steering rack just for power steering or also for ratio? Because if it's the former, wouldn't an electric system have been easier? Also, if you're in the mountains now, keep an eye on the brake-temperatures downhill. Jboogsthethug
Hey man, congrats on the retirement from the USMC! And you're only 23 minutes from Pike's Peak, rock on!

I did the hydraulic power steering for three different reasons. I already had the power steering pump for the RB, rebuild support is better for the Subaru rack, and the under dash area is neater. My rack was getting sloppy and was needing rebuilt or replaced anyway. For downhill, my brakes are overbuilt anyway with vented in the front and back. I have tickets to the Hill climb at the end if the month. Great driving roads around here though
Jboogsthethug
How was the hill climb?? I read that there was a motorcyclist who died during it this year, pretty sad but at least he died doing something he loved.
winstonusmc
He was the last motorcycle to go, fastest qualifying. He was moving when he went by us. The driver's had been complaining about the too being like a ribbon. I suspect it's from the heavy construction vehicles. They are rebuilding the visitor center at the top. I had a lot of fun but it was a long day. To get a good spectator spot, you have to show up on the mountain at 2:00am. We didn't get off the mountain till about 7:00pm. Anyways, here is some Z car content. Upgrade my tails to new JDM lights. They are new blem units. All bulbs function as intended minus the small center parking lights. I now have all LEDs in them.
