subtle_driver
Hi, I'm in the process of installing an l28et from A 83 280zxt. I have the ecu harness but discovered I'm missing the ignitor. They go for $120-$200 and I was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative I could use. Possibly from a 240sx, or a gm or ford that I can grab from the parts store. Thanks
NewZed
Search over at zcar.com for user "skittle". He has a writeup linked in his sig for using the GM HEI module in place of the ignitor. Seems to work.
BLOZ UP
You can use one off of a Z31 I imagine. There are two iterations, the later one is nicer.
subtle_driver
Thanks I'll look into those. So I'm assuming the crank angle sensor sends a signal to the ecu, then the ecu sends a modified signal back to the ignitor. So the ignitor just ignites.... Nothing else right? cgsheen
The Ignitor is an amplifier. It takes the signal from the ECU and amplifies it to state that will fire the coil. Simple as that. And yes, the GM HEI works as a substitute, it's easy to find, and cheap to purchase. There are several threads on how to hook them up - they have 4 spades: power, ground, signal from ECU, signal out to coil...
subtle_driver
Wow! Thanks for the great informative reply! I cant wait to get this l28et wired. Its a pain when the wiring diagrams in the fsm dont exactly match, or when the colors are the same.
subtle_driver
So in theory, I could use the existing wiring that I have at my coil and zx n/a dizzy plug that goes to the ignition control module on the dizzy and run a wire from the ecu to the zx turbo ignitor? cgsheen
Yup. Just like that...
