Carbon Fiber Intakes, L-Series

Recommended Posts

I am not here to promote, merely gauge interest in Carbon Fiber intakes for L-Series. Were opening a small shop doing work on Pre-83 Datsun's. These intakes are on drawing board, features would include, Long tube runners, Built-in ITB's, Injector bungs, Large Plenum, and snout near front for intake tubing(or filter). Right now we're Estimating around the 700$ range for setup without fuel rail. Intake will work with any already made aftermarket L-Series Fuel rails(not there mounts). It's not too bad of a price considering, intake AND ITB's.

Even though the fate of the production of the prototype will have a large impact based on feedback from y'all, the mold however will be started next week!! Given a big detail has now been worked out, we Might be able to drop overall price. But this is still to be calculated.

I'd recommend a straight (not bent) intake. You can either have a straight runner with a taper/bell mouth at the end, or a fully tapered runner. Options for length tuning are nice (bolt-on air horns). Offer different head flange IDs (40mm, 45mm). Bosses for fuel rail mounts and vacuum taps for each runner might be nice as well.

I've recently installed a TWM/Borla ITB setup on my 280zx(3.2l)  with a fiberglass intake and found out that the TWM intake is not sized correctly for the 280zx has a larger brake booster. Had to slightly modify the back end of the intake for it to fit. Good thing I opted for the fiberglass intake (they do offer a CF version but that would have been a pain to modify).  Another question would be , what design/size airfilter will work on this intake and provide the best flow? For autocross you're better off without the airbox, it will give more torque lower in the rpms. Lesson learned.

You're starting a shop just to focus on pre-83 L6 Datsuns?  What is your area of expertise - composite molding, tooling, engine building...?  Just curious.   Examples of previous or current work would be interesting.

@ Leon, A small curve will be in the runners that will aim the plenum about 45 degrees upward away from the brake booster. It will be a smooth curve just as the LD28, but not as far. Air horns will go into the overall design, and will be removable. Lessons for these are coming from the small high reveing ITB/ICB Crotch Rocket bikes.

@ bigbreak_2000, It will have the runners with a balance tube for balance/vaccume purposes, as well as the unit will most likely ship with a -8 vacuume log to be mounted on firewall/where ever you want for everything vacuume. For a Air filter, the unit will have a removable plenum for racing purposes, at the front of the plenum, a round port will be part of the unit for the attatchment of intake tubeing for a filter.

@ NewZed, We are doing a small one car shop on the side, We run into alot of people that "Can't figure out" and "It's been sitting for awhile". My partner and I have messed with Z's for a few good years now, and can help with advice, or repairs/mods to local Z Car's. Were not claming to be, or trying to be a full on expert shop. That being said, we pretty much just work on 71-83 Z Car's. We both do it all on the car's, but I also do fabrication on a diffrent side. Only example of previous work I can offer are in Fuel rails, Not stated before due to the fact I am not here to promote, but if you wish to see. There posted on Zdriver Marketplace and F/B pages "280ZX Drivers" and "MZC"(Midsouth Z Club)

@ m1ghtymaxxXx, a Turbo version would be a one pice unit, with a single T/B, the ITB's would not play such a huge differance in an application to where the air is being force fed into the engine. But, I do plan on a unit shortly after/if this unit goes to prototype.

If I missed a question I'll try to reread all the replys and answer them shortly.

I know this may be a little bit pre-mature, or possibly give away the "secret sauce" ahead of time, but CAD drawings or something similar would be cool to see as you continue through the prototyping phases.

Personally, I would like to see something modular, whereas intake runner with bolt on TB (weber dcoe pattern), bolt on air horns, and bolt on airbox options. You could potentially sell more given some peoples disappointment with their canon intake manifolds (& knock-offs) for webers. Just a thought.

@ m1ghtymaxxXx: Creating all the barring seats to take positive pressure would raise the cost, and cost to added benefit of ITB on boosted application would not be cost effective, and yes a one T/B unit for boost would be much cheaper.

@ T-Bone028: I hate to let you down, but there is no CAD work on this intake, it's all old school. Once models are made I'll be posting them for comments. The end result will be the a mix of everyones comments. A replacement for the DCOE style intake would be nice, and might be a future project if this intake goes into production. A modular intake that would incorporate all style's such as DCOE, ITB, and boosted is possible and we will go over ideas for this. I'll discuss the Maxima brackets, but at this time were loaded with work, and other prototypes.

Ive been discussing it, We will try the modular aproch to this. Short runner with DCOE flange, for carb guys. The same short runner part as before, but bolt on at DCOE flange, with longer runner, Injector ports, ITB's and removable air box and air horn options for N/A EFI guys, and the same DCOE intake, but Bolt on air box with one large built in T/B for the turbo guys. All interchangeable. We will start going over prototypes in the next couple weeks. We have a top feed conversion(affordable) kit in prototype for the Z32 thats first.
