L28ET 510?? Will it fit??

Lockjaw is exactly right. I saw one at the Mt. Shasta All-Datsun meet in July. The short version is: Deepen trans tunnel for longer engine to fit, shorten driveshaft to take up slack, new radiator for larger engine( I think a honda or aftermarket honda replacement was used), a Trust FMIC fits so very nicely on these 510's it looks factory, and switch to an electric pusher fan.

There were some fabrication issues concerning the transmission mounts, and maybe the motor mounts too, but I'm not sure.

I know this does not belong here in Z-land but... I have been collecting turbo parts to turbo my Z car but after restoring it I thought of buying another Zcar to have TWO bad@$$ Zcars!!! Well I after seaching for a local and cheap Zcar I ran across a 510 wagon. It looks like the famous 510s but just in a wagon form.

And since it is a NM car it has very little rust.

Now here is the question: Will the L28 fit in its engine bay?? If so I can use all the turbo parts in it. Think about it, I would add two cyl. and a turbo. I would like to know if it would work before I buy the car. Thanks Mark

With enough determination you can make almost anything work but you've got to ask yourself what makes the most sense. I've got a couple of 510s and I've got an L28ET but I wouldn't try to put the two together.

There are other swaps that make more sense for the time & $ spent. There are kits available for VG30 and SR20 swaps, and why not look into other 4cyl turbo (Misub?) swaps or other V6 (Buick GN?) swaps that are relatively compact and might avoid reconstructing the firewall. I don't want to discourage ambition, but look at the hood of a 240Z/280ZX and that of a PL510...why try to put an inline 6 in there? BTW I think I've heard of a 510 with a Toyota DOHC I6 but it doesn't drop in there without a lot of reworking of the engine bay. DAW

The wagon has no independent rear suspension or ie no r200 diff upgrade. Hold out for a 510 2 door sedan (they are rare) or another Z. That wagon will always be a wagon but I once saw one that had the 2 door sedan doors mounted up front with the back doors filled in which made a real cool Datsun 510 Nomad 2 door sport wagon.

I have had both an l28t and my current engine the 7m-gte from the MKIII Supra in my 510 wagon. You can fit anything if you want to fabricate enough although I was able to use stock motor mounts as the L28 is an L motor (obviously). In short you have to cut the firewall out, relocate the heater, live w/o wipers or get an a/m system, modify the steering centrelink and a thousand other things. VG30 swap is easier but you can't fit a Turbo VG30 as it interferes with the frame rails.

As for the suspension if you want to go fast in a straight line the solid rear axle makes launching alot easier. When the IRS squats in a 510 you lose alot of tire contact patch. My best time at the drags on 205/40/17 street tires was 13.4 at 112mph with a 2.2 60ft time. Not bad for a wagon but a few traction issues to say the least.

I agree with Supra 510 , it would be much easier to put a VG30 or an SR20 into a 510. VG30.com offers bolt in kits and i have seen a bolt in kit for a SR20 in the Dime Quarterly www.dimequarterly@tierranet.com . I belive if you added up your time on the modifications a V6/ turbo 4cyl engine swap could have been done in far less time with fewer headaches. http://photos.yahoo.com/sss510six

Anthony,

I will bet anything your traction problem at the strip is because of those 17s. As I stated in another post, I went from low-1.60s and a couple of 1.55s with 15" & 16" DRs to a best of 1.82 with 275/40-17 Nittos and most of the time I just blow them away. I truly regret going to 17s because now I cannot use just one tire for street and strip.

BTW, if anyone is interested, someone in Miami is building a GN/510.

Scottie,

I have to run 17's to clear my front brakes + I like how they look which I imagine is why you purchased 17's. I autocross and do track days once in a while and the brakes are great so no complaints. I would love to do the One Lap of America www.Onelapofamerica.com -- so I have built the car for that type of event. I am upgrading to 245-40-17's in the rear which should be at least a little improvement over the 205's. SSS510 ran 11.77 on 7 inch slicks in his 510. I think at the time he had about 40 more hp than I and a little lighter car. His 60ft times were in the 1.6 range.

What would happen if I move to motor mounts forward, and use a thin rad. from a newer car and place it on the other side of rad. support. I think welding the motor mounts in a different spot would be easier to do rather that cutting and welding the firewall, and trans. mounts (to move them toward the back) then modifing the driveline to fit.:confused:

Mark,

The crank pulley will hit the lower core support if you move the engine forward more than a few inches and from my recollection of my sway you will need more than that to get the engine in w/o cutting the firewall. You may want to check with SSS510 on this as he has the motor in his car now and can tell you for sure. Also, not sure if you care about handling or not but moving the engine forward will just make the car understeer even more.

Anthony,

You have an absolutely awesome 510. I first saw pictures of your car when a good friend of mine went to Shasta a few years ago and I have always admired the time and work you have taken to install the 7MGTE into your car.

When my firends come over with their new Super Street magazines and what not, I pull out my "510 Photo Album" and show them pics of your wagon and watch their jaw drop.

Well congrats - sweet ride.

Yasin,

Thanks alot. I have the rear set of my wheels being widened right now by a machine shop that does that sort of thing for guys that run Bonneville, point being I trust his work. I will be able to run 245/40/17's in the rear and I have the tires now and they do fit under the fenderwells. I'll try to get some pix up after I install them. Again I appreciate the kind comments.
