Hypertek Posted June 20, 2014 Share Posted June 20, 2014 Been planing to hit the inner fender wells and underside with a wire brush and coat them with something like rust encapsulator /por15/ chassis saver etc. My car is pretty solid/clean besides the typical surface rust. Suggestions welcomed on which product/route to go with. Ive read people suggest going to bare metal and coating with epoxy primer, than top coat of paint, but i think right now I like the easy route of just brushing on something like the rust preventative paints. Ive read por15 has a prep process that has to be done in order for it to hold up. I would love to put on some sound dampening coating as well, so eastwood's rubberized rust encapsulator looks good. But again, suggestions welcomed. I know this is probably an age-old debate, but there are just soo many products/methods to use now. I am planing to keep the engine bay the original color for now. SRRTz Posted June 20, 2014 Share Posted June 20, 2014 We used Rust Bullet on most of the underbelly of my 280 and are planning to spray the entire underside of my dad's Barracuda when sheet metal replacement is finished. On the 280 all we did was wire wheel off the surface rust and old paint then wipe the surface down with lacquer thinner before brushing on Rust Bullet. Four years of driving in salty gulf coast air on semi-crappy roads and there are no signs of peeling or chipping. On another note, my uncle's Road Runner was coated with por15 several years ago and it is holding up great as well. However, his car was on a rotisserie so access for prep work was far easier compared to cleaning up a car on jack stands... Ultimately I would recommend the Rust Bullet solely because the prep work is a little less intensive but por15 will get the job done just as well (when the surface is prepared properly for its application) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I actually scuffed up, wiped down and sprayed rustoleum 7777 (thinned with mineral spirits or paint thinner, i forgot) onto my rx7, which than sat for afew years til i gave it away. But i was even happy with that. bfg Posted June 20, 2014 Share Posted June 20, 2014 KBS RustSeal and Blacktop is yet another equivalent to POR. Similar amount of prep but I found it to be fairly forgiving. Just finished brushing it onto my suspension parts and front wheel wells. I'm very happy with the outcome but we'll see how it holds up over time. Driving in New England should be a good test for it. m1ghtymaxXx Posted June 23, 2014 Share Posted June 23, 2014 I would also recommend POR15 and other epoxy coatings if you don't mind putting the time into doing it. Personally I wouldn't recommend the rubberized/asphalt undercoatings as I blame them for killing my 83. They might be fine for a few years, but eventually they can lose their bond and trap water, all the while hiding the damage it's doing. If you want to add some sound deadening, I would recommend applying whatever product (spray on or adhesive) to the interior side of the floors. Only downside is it won't cut the noise of stones and debris hitting the floor and inner fenders, but in my opinion that's a small price to pay for preserving your car. rejracer Posted June 23, 2014 Share Posted June 23, 2014 Lizard skin makes a sound control and thermal barrier, i've wanted to try their products, but have no experience with it. Anyone here used them? Their prep work seems to be straight forward, similar to paint. I agree with with mightymaxx on the rubberized products, they don't seal as well as they should. socorob Posted June 24, 2014 Share Posted June 24, 2014 I used the lizard skin but my car still isnt running yet so I cant comment on the durability. After my friend cut his rear flares, he brushed on the lizard skin sound under his fenders and inside the rear inner fenders and he said it made enough difference in the sound level to notice from just those areas.
