Boog
Hey everyone, I'm on my phone and I just got done typing up a huge post only to lose it, so I'll keep this short and to the point. I got an 83 for a turbo swap into my 76 280z, and it starts and idles. The car on a cold start idles but when the throttle is pressed, it chokes and dies. When warm, it revs up, but painfully and only to max 4k rpm. I replaced cap, rotor, plugs, not it. Did an oil change, not related. Took apart the intake, the turbo doesn't spin. I'm now in the slow process of taking off my intake manifold to replace the turbo with one I have. I'm wondering if a stuck turbo would explain my problems, and if not, what else could be an issue? Let me know what other info I can provide, and thanks in advance!
Boog
Forgot to add, the car idles beautifully. It has a p90A head and let me say, the difference in lifter clacking is amazing.
Domzs
If the turbo doesn't spin , it's like having a banana up the tailpipe . .
Boog
So you're saying that its probably just the turbo?
Domzs
I would replace it and recheck . If your turbo doesn't spin , you will have restrictions on both intake and exhaust . Good luck . Update us on the result .
Kash
Don't think it is the turbo, check the TPS and MAF connections. There will still be enough air going across the compressor to allow the engine rev...
calvin280zxt
They are undrivable with a seized turbo. You would think it would act the same except no boost. Not true Edited July 24, 2014 by calvin280zxt
Tony D
To run the ZXT with a turbo that is seized..you: 1) Remove the turbo. 2) pull the rotating assembly out. 3) tap the center section for plugs, and lug cold and hot side. 4) reinstall everything 5) use a vice grips to crimp the oil feed line under the intake where it's virtually invisible. This will render it as driveable as any NA ZX, to the point where someone will spend hours flogging it through a ditch with his bro-in-law in the passengers seat saying "it seems fine to me" while you are cursing, swearing, and repeating "THIS SOB IS NOT MAKING BOOST! It's way down on power!!! DAMNIT!!!" A SNAPPED off compressor wheel can "pinwheel" and return some drive ability. A SEIZED one will choke performance to a noticeable extent. I did a turbo by-pass on my 84 , bought it with a bad turbo and the engine was extremely dirty . Figured I by-pass turbo ( as mentioned method ) and drive it for awhile before installing a new turbo . With low compression ratio and some restriction on intake and exhaust , it had performance of a 3 cylinders , at best .
Tony D
I was able to jump the car and do various Dukes of Hazard Stunts in it with no turbine and no compressor in the housing!
Six_Shooter
Or you could make a block off plate that installs into the turbine housing, where the center section would have. I've seen that done a couple times, easier than all of the work to keep the center section compressor for looks.
