miky360
So with just my luck, I ran into issues with the cheaper bolt on option. Of course right? Brand new 280z rotors SS Lines 12+8 Callipers Take a look at this spacing issue where i should easily bolt on my calliper to my knuckles. Looks like i'd have to grind down my knuckle in order to make these calliper fit which I won't do because this was supposed to be the bolt on option. I'm sure I have some sort of wrong part but I don't know which. I've searched up any s12+8 spacing issues but HybridZ keeps coming up with literally 0 results but I can see a s12+8 topic right on the first page lol. Where did I go wrong? Please and Thank you! Sideways
Whatre those calipers from? Id have to dig to be positive, but if memory serves me right (and it has been known to be wrong), theres actually a couple different s12+8 calipers floating around. In particular there was a mid-late 80s s12+8 caliper from a 4x4 that didnt work, and you needed the s12+8 from the late 70s/early 80s. Or maybe not. haha. Though from the looks of it... Miles
Assuming that you have 79 - 85 Toyota 4x4 pickup calipers and the correct rotors and hubs there should be no problem with fitment. Check the links below for more information: http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/toyotabrakeupgrade/index.html http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/Calipers/toyotaCalipers.html http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/88822-70-240z-vs-240z-280z-brake-calipers-and-hubs-4-piston-toyota-caliper-issue/ Note that the Toyota caliper was not designed to accept banjo brake line fittings and may leak. Use a -3AN line and a 10mm x 1.0 to -3AN line adaptor as shown in the attached picture. Edited November 22, 2014 by Miles
miky360
My only guess now is that I may have the wrong caliper. I'm not 100% sure where they came from but I was assured they were for this application as I got it from another Z guy but he didn't actually install them. LanceVance
This is in regards to a vented rotor conversion, but it still applies: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/119779-issue-replacing-s12w-caliper/ Pretty recent too, perhaps this is going to become a common issue when parts store calipers are used? Sure junkyard calipers can be crusty, but OEM quality can be much more reliable. Rebuild kits are cheap... Miles
After having bad experiences with several parts store calipers I now only use Nugeon brand parts. Napa carries them. Excellent quality control. http://www.nugeon.com/index.html
miky360
So i gave up and just bought the Silvermine calipers and I tried them on just now. Same issue. Same exact caliper. Before I grind down the knuckles, anyone have any suggestions?
Miles
Do not grind anything. Figure out why it is not fitting: step by step. If you have the correct rotor and calipers they just bolt on. Hundreds of these have been done. Are your hubs installed correctly? Is the inner bearing grease seal seated? Is the hub seated on the axle? Keep searching. This issue has come up before. miky360
I think you might be correct. I tried to fit my stock ones back on and no luck. Same issue. Something is messed up somewhere and I'm going to start all over again.
casper9182
You have 240z hubs. And 280z rotors, the calipers are right you just can't mix and match hubs and rotors.280z hubs are all round, the 240z are "scalloped"I hope this is right and you get it fixed picture should help Edited February 18, 2015 by casper9182
miky360
LOL bingo. Just measured the rotors. I do have 280z hubs but it turns out I need 240z rotors. The 240z rotors are taller than the 280z. The gap that needed to be offseted was the same difference between the 240z & 280z rotors.

casper9182
I do wanna share that in the last picture you posted showing top down your hub and rotor, you can see the 240z scallop rotor in the picture. The Toyota caliper bolt on upgrade is a great upgrade, I've done it on 3 different z cars. miky360
You think someone may have swapped my 280 hubs for 240 hubs somewhere in its 36yrs? :/

casper9182
Yes no big deal, there is no offset difference, but when you do brake upgrades or changes you need the the 240z stuff, (which I found to be more common.) You can always find 280z hubs if your OCD about it lol.
Miles
apped my 280 hubs for 240 hubs somewhere in its 36yrs? :/ Good assumption. My first 240Z had many 280Z parts installed by previous owners. PITA. Edited December 7, 2014 by Miles
miky360
The calipers are a perfect fit now that I'm using 240z rotors. Thanks guys for the help! I never would've guessed I had 240 hubs since last owner claimed "no mods, all stock" lol
