seattlejester
Yay an update! Ugh, I have the same thoughts granted I blew up a 7m which is kind of notorious for that. Granted I had the most wondrous time this weekend in the wet and the car didn't miss a beat. I think my 3.7 is a bit too short at least with an R154. 6k still seems a bit short, check toe? Toe is more of a tire killer in the short term.
makaofox
Yea 7m's are but this one was probably just bad luck from the start. Not gonna worry too much about it for now. But summer time will bring out most of the issues. The 350z trans has a pretty decent ratio, it also had the same 3.54 as the 280z/350z. So those guys usually do 4.11s but for an na thats amazing for a Holset id have to start in 4th! lol Ive needed an alignment for 7 years, im just uber lazy about it. My camber is really aggressive to fit in the wheel well. So I wouldnt be surprised if toe is out of wack. While the car was stalling and starving for fuel, I did the stupidest thing and gunned it (which brought it back to life) and BOY was it fun! The car after that did not approve but didnt die. I will check filters before swapping pumps and see if I can get another cruise out of it.
makaofox
So been a long time but I finally got a retune after all these years. Only updated the fuel pump to an intank aeromotive phantom stealth and changed the boost to 14lbs. On a mainline dyno made 400hp which dyno jet numbers is 440ish on 14lbs which is exactly where I wanted to be. If i pushed it to 18 I probably can break 430 maybe 450 tops but no need at the moment. All this with 6th cylinder on 100psi while the rest are at 175/180!
seattlejester
Congrats! Bummer on the low cylinder. I've learned to really address that sooner than later. I hoped it was just a weak gasket or something and it turned out to be a cracked piston.
makaofox
Forums arent what they used to be but what the heck UPDATE I replaced the motor once the ring lands shattered on 5 of the 6 pistons. How it still drove really proves how strong the 2j is. I got it retuned with ECU masters black with nothing changed made 410whp with less fuel and ignition timing. I swapped the CD009 because its an absolutely trash transmission. If it somehow was able to have a better shift then everything would change. I tried 4 shifters and the one where you modify the trans to get it and still was no good. Swapped over to a z32 5sp and the result made me love the car. Felt amazing, never miss shifted and the gear ratio felt really good in boost. Overall the car was pretty good for 2023. SAD UPDATE as of 2025 I parted with the 2jzge-t. The car sounded amazing and had 410hp which was amazing for me BUT for 10 years it was nothing but unreliable head aches. The motor would over heat constantly, couples popping off due to blow by, transmission was terrible for majority of its time till the last year, terrible gas mileage, ignition break up and fuel cut out randomly. Basically was just screwed from the first engine builder and was dealing with those hurtles from the beginning. I said im done and want a new change of pace. Looked at several possibilities VK45/ VK56, sr20det, VQ, k24/ K20 annnnnnnd the one I landed on KA24DE. YUP KA24DE not something I was expecting also but they are pretty cheap (sort of still), can make 400hp, sound terrible (nothing compares to 2j), and should get better than 12mpg. K series is too expensive for initial rwd easily could spend 8-10k when ive spent that already on the 2j stuff over the years. So figured ka24 with 5k can get very far vs k24 3k just on trans set up alone. End of an era.
Zetsaz
Excited to see your progress! Even though the KA24DE is a bit dated, I honestly think they remain heavily underrated. So many people moved away from them to the SR20, but the KA is (at least in my opinion) much more stout, and it's hard to turn down so much extra displacement. It would be my choice of affordable swap if I was in a 510 wagon which I've always wanted. Even the sohc version in my D21 has proven pretty great, though it's now relegated to farm truck in mexico with my parents. It's interesting that you didn't like the CD009, with how popular it is. Though I know most people have to swap shifters which affects how it feels a lot. I really liked the later JK in my G37s when I had that. Synchros were great, and the stock shifter felt "short enough" to not want to change anything. I hate short shifters and the notchiness, however. On my 71c trans I'm switching to the stock shifter housing and a nismo solid shifter. Throw will be a bit longer, but I want a slightly closer to stock feel and to not feel like I'm screwing up my synchros from a too-short and notchy shifter. Also, surprised you got such terrible mileage on the 2JZ. What was your rear end ratio? My L28ET gets me 22-23 highway mpg when I've done roadtrips and it's not even really particularly well tuned for it. I've been tempted to switch from my current 3.9 rear to a 3.7 - the 3.54 seems a bit too long for my taste, but I think just swapping to the 3.7 might get me to an easy 25mpg with better tuning.
