Georgia Flash
Hey guys I was just looking through my new Summit mag and came across these odd looking things called Super Trapp Mufflers. They are only 4in long. Are these all you need for a muffler? Becasue if they are it seems like a no brainer for the V-8Z conversion. I mean they should take up very little space at the end of the Z unlike trying to stuff two regular size mufflers in there. Has anyone tried these? Thanks. blueovalz
I've used them before (and may have to resort to using them again). For racing, I removed the baffles and end plates completely, and on the street I put them back on. They are not quiet, even using a minimum number of baffles. I would compare them sound-wise to the flowmaster 2 chambers (if not a little noisier). Performance was good with them, but I couldn't get past the noise for the street mods I'm doing. But with my new rear undertray, and the close quarters to the cell, I may have to resort to using them again. They do draw favorable comments and attention due to their unique appearance, and with the SS, you never have to worry about a rust-out. Just be sure to use the anti-sieze compound on the retaining screws when you change the baffles around.
Georgia Flash
Wooooohooooooo looks like I have found my solution to the muffler question. Thanks a lot for the quick response.
Guest Anonymous
I has not considered these because I thought that they gave a raspy glasspack sound and represented the sound of many ricers now with big tips on crap cars. Am I just wrong or do they have that buzz sound. If they sound like a flowmaster that would be sweet. Further, how so they flow compared to the other mufflers that are out there? Guest zfan
Guys, spoke to the guys a Summit recently and Flowmaster has introduced a much smaller version of the Delta muffler. You can get three chamber flows in 3x8x11. I just purchased 2 chambers that are 2 1/2" exhaust with dimensions as 3x8x8.5. Pretty cool. Summit tech said flowmaster introduced them because they were losing market in the tight fit area. Just an idea. zfan..Mike
Guest Anonymous
I wonder what the dB levels are going to be on that little sucker.
Georgia Flash
It seems like I remember seeing these on an old 40's model Plymouth hot rod at a local car show last summer and I think that the guy even fired up the engine (small block chevy, of course) and it sounded nice. Like I said though, I think, It seems, maybe I saw,.....now where did I put that keyboard....
DavyZ
One reason I did not go with the Supertrapp's is that a magazine article (muffler comparo) showed that they make more noise with respect to the same level of hp as other mufflers. That was the one thing that caught my attention. I don't like too much noise, so I figured I would use a Dynomax Superturbo or something like that instead: quieter, good sound, great power levels. That said, the Supertrapps offer the advantage that Terry described: go to the track and just take off the plates/baffles = instant race muffler! The flexability in tuning cannot be overlooked, but I am a 'set it and forget it' kind of guy (hydraulic lifters, baby!) so they are not for me. Still, a siamesed set of Supertrapps coming from the rear of a Z looks pretty good. Dale (BayAreaZ) has some, but I don't have picks to share, sorry. blueovalz
I never had the raspy sound, but the STs were behind a V8. They simply sounded like a loud turbo muffler.
BayAreaZT
I have a dual supertrap setup on my car. I agree with Davy in that I dont't want to bother taking plates on and off but I am planning on changing them due to the sound issue. I don't think they are too loud for the street, I just want a quieter exhaust for a sleeper car. I had a supertrap on my celica a long time ago and if I remember right, it did have a bit of a raspy sound but it was very deep sounding. The sound is less raspy on a V8. pparaska
Just rumor, but I've heard that by the time you get the Supertrap's even a bit quiet, they are quite restrictive.
blueovalz
Exellent point Pete. I refrained from making this comment. My experience was that I found 2 baffles (not a typo here, 2 baffles in each side) finally gave me the desired sound level I wanted. The down side: two baffles offer very little cross section for the excaping gasses, plus it had that "puffer" sound. The power was diminished a small but noticable amount, but with only 2 baffles, I expected the engine to choke and die. It still seemed to work fine, CONSIDERING what was plugging the exhaust. It almost looked like the exhaust was capped off.
Guest greimann
Just to throw a little curve in this thread, has anyone considered PowerEffects mufflers? They are adjustable, cool looking, compact and expensive (don't know how much). Here is a pic: http://members.rennlist.org/dan10101/Images/PowerEffectsSide.jpg
pparaska
Too glitzy for me.
Dp351zcar
What are they? I have never seen or heard of them before.
DavyZ
It looks like a gun! Pretty cool looking, but definitely a lot of 'show' in the design. Might be good on that Porsche(?) but I think I'll stick to my Dynomax. Davy
Guest jwelch
Just a friendly reminder that emissions sniffers don't fit into the Super Trap. I had one on my 260Z L6 and the emissions guy wouldn't test my car because the sniffer nozzle wouldn't go inside the muffler. I had to go home take it off and put the stock muffler on to get through emissions. I hope all states aren't this bad. Guest Anonymous
They advertise those in the roadster mags, they look great on the back of a 32 or something but with those theres plenty of room for mufflers between the frame rails before it hits those tips. The diagram in they're ad looks like they basically swiped Moroso swirly mufflers style... (you know the ones with what looks like a giant auger drill inside and the sound goes around the outside and through the middle tube...) but use a cast aluminum cast instead. I havn't heard a set, maybe they're great, but look like they'd make better resonators than primary mufflers... Regards, Lone
Georgia Flash
Yep that would suck having to go home and pull off your muffler for the emissions sniffer, I would not have that problem where I live because we do not have to get our cars inspected As far as putting more mufflers under the car, I mean, that's what this whole discussion is about in the first place, using the super trapps instead of traditional mufflers because of their reletively small size. I do not mind noise and I do not care to have a sleeper car because I will not be doing any "street" racing anyways. I am a mature 36 year old and my wild oats have pretty much been sown. I just want a good looking body of the Z and the rumble of a good V-8 under the hood and I will be happy
