V8 pondering question

OK, I've been spoiled. I love fuel injection. When I do my V8 swap with a 6 speed, I want it to be FI. Question is, the LT1 has its shortcomings (opticrap ign, water pump failures)...and the LS1 is not as documented as far as swaps go. Is there a good older style SBC that is FI or added without costing an arm and three legs, and that is over the 300 hp range, that will work with the T56? I would prefer to have a pulled engine or crate...I don't want the spend the time on the engine...enough will be spent on the car itself.. :D

Well, you could go with a 96-98 vortec truck engine. I know a lot of people are using that engine without the electronics and making great HP. I will be using it in cerebrated form myself. Stock I think they delivered between 250 and 260 Hp at the tires. Assuming a 20% drive train loss that would be in the 312-325 Hp range. I know that with a cam, new springs that allow for extra lift and new roller rockers they are capable of Hp #s around 380.

Like I said, I have never seen a Z or another car with all the electronics but I bet it would work great. I have seen wiring information available for S10 and toyota FJ-40 swaps so you should have some help.

You could get a GM 330 hp crate motor for about $2100 and a Holley commander 950 TBI for about $1400. Guess you just have to decide on how much you want to spend.

You can also take a older style smallblock (pre-87) with the two piece main and put on a 85 or 86 TPI unit, the 86 would be better because of a change in computer. It'll directly bolt on the older small block. The only downside using the early TPI unit is I believe it has a MAF sensor which chokes down HP if you intend on flowing alot of air. The later ones that use a MAP style of fuel calculation tables don't require the MAF sensor and those you typically see with a air cleaner right on the front of a plenum.

 

Later ones may also work by having the bolt holes elongated, but thats speculation maybe someone else can answer that. At almost 275 hp just like that, you shouldn't have any problem getting 300 hp with the TPI system.

 

The only reason I mention using the stock TPI stuff is your required HP of 300 hp is well within the means of a TPI system and its way cheap to pickup compared to aftermarket units. Good luck with your project.

I like the ramjet 350.. little pricey but I may have to go that route. Will the T56 bolt up to it??

Also, is there a dyno sheet anywhere on that engine to see the torque and hp curves?

Yes the T-56 will bolt up to the RamJet 350. A very nice motor.

There are dyno sheets around for the ramjet 350.

Try Sallee Chev's web site or do a google search for "RamJet 350"

check out the gm ram jet crate motors. they have simple wiring harness, and no emissions controls. fairly reasonable pricing too.

A buddy of mine just bought a Ram Jet 350 for his highly modded jeep, after he found that the LT1 he bought off ebay was siezed. It supposedly had 20,000 miles on it and was ready to run, but when we had to break a piston to dissemble it we questioned those facts. Anyway the Ramjet now hanging right next to my 260 at the schools shop rockon.gif Maybe i'll put it in my car when he's not looking :D They are very cool and very simple, I was really impressed. I was quite surprised when I found out that our local GM Dealership had 3 of them in stock.

That ramjet does set up there pretty high. I want to use the stock hood. weird.gif

 

The LT1 may be the best way to go. Just pull the eng/tranny/elect out of the fbody and go with it...

 

You guys that are running LT1's, have they given you many problems?..

i think the ramjet efi motor will require no hood mods to fit it. it doesnt sit very high, it only appears to. remember, theres no carb on top, the highest point is that manifold and i think hotrod magazine measured it and it is actually just slightly SHORTER than a standard carb setup with a dual plane manifold, and one hell of a motor to boot, pricey though, im thinking about TPI myself, for a low revving mild motor its good upgrade and fairly straight, hey LONE i have some tpi setups for butt cheap come holler!

Yeah, I know overall it's about like a hi-rise intake and carb, but it's high towards the front of the motor where hood clearance might be a problem, especially once you put an elbow/hose on the TB. It might fit at that. I wonder how much power you could push through that setup with upgraded cam, heads, etc. The Stealth Ram grumpy just got might be the ticket for the same bucks.

THE HOLLEY STEALTH RAM IS 10" tall from block rail to the highest point, thats 1" taller than a TPI intake but the HOLLEY STEALTH RAM flows about 300cfm per port(with minor porting more) where the tpi intake only flows about 235cfm per runner so if you are buliding a kick butt EFI engine useing a G.M. style throttle body thats the intake to buy.(thats more than the mini ram and super ram intakes flow btw guys)
