Rednax,

A few questions:

What distributor and ignition module are you using? Did you need to mdify the MS to work with it? What injectors are you using?

I'm getting colse to getting my motor in, so any info on the installation would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

I am using a lot of stuf of a pontiac fiero. This is because I work for a fiero specialist here in holland. I used the sensors, throttlebody and injectors. I modified the 14mm O-ring injectors to work with the barb style rail. I cut of the plastic surround to the metal core. This will allow you too slide a hose over the injector tip and secure it with a hose clamp.

I was using a one wire O2 sensor but today I found out that it is placed too far from the engine to get warm enough (it is down below in my MSA header). So I will be using a heated unit.

The ignition is stock. The fiero TB has a ported vacuum connection for vacuum advance. The megasquirt is connected to the - of the coil to pick up engine speed. This worked perfectly.

Xander,

I saw that you got your Z running through the Megasquirt Yahoo list.

That's great, congratulations!

Mine in installed and ready to go on my 280z as of last week, but I am having a heck of a time getting a good tach signal. I tried the resistance and capacitance changes in the tach input circuit that the manual suggests with no success. Tomorrow, I'm going to try a MSD 6a and use the "nice square wave" tach output that it has as the input to the MS, hopefully this will do the trick.

Did you have to do any of the signal conditioning modifications to the tach input?

There are some pics of my prep work here:

Good luck and keep us posted,

Mark

what kind of plug wires are you using?. I didn't change anything on the megasquirt and it worked fine. Just get the rpm input from the negative side of the coil. I am also on the SDSEFI list. They often speak of the importance of good suppression wires. somthing to think about?

I am using Crane 8.5 mm wires that I bought a little over a year ago. I don't think they are the problem. They are advertised to be RF

friendly.

I have tried getting the tach input from the (-) side of the coil. No luck.

I took the past two days to clean up the wiring while waiting on the MSD box. I also used a piece of 3" PVC pipe to put in place of the air flow meter that I'll no longer be using. The MSD 6a comes in the mail today. I'll report back on the results. I'm trying to be patient, but at the same time, I'm very eager to see it run.

Here are the details that pertain to this project:

1976 280Z 2+2

Everything fuel/ignition related is stock unless otherwise noted

Completely removed existing FI harness

240sx TB + full range TPS, Port matched intake to TB

4 wire Bosch NB O2 sensor welded into a MSA Header

Stock dizzy/ignition that (hopefully) will trigger the MSD

and use the MSD tach output as input to the megasquirt

Stock 2.4 ohm injectors without dropping resistors (I setup for PWM)

Stock water temperature sensor

KIA air temperature sensor

Hehe you might be able to help me out for bigger TB wishes! since we do not have to much car paradises in holland

well check my site http://www.280zxt.tk not much on my mods on there..

Basicly i'm building a Flat top f54 with n42 ported head mild cam headers big Tb and bigger injectors raise fp...

well you know the tweaks

If you go IC and bigger injectors then programmable injection is the way to go. Megasquirts is a great system but it has it's limits. SDS is more complete (ignition control). Personally I dont like increasing the fuel pressure. I think bigger injectors is a more ellegant solution.

As for Throttlebody's. Here in holland you can find a lot of Alfa Romeo cars at the junkyard. These Have some huge 70mm TB's. You might want to look in to that.

Love to hear how it works out.

So you are saying Alfa Romeo TB'S are more or less a direct bolt on swap ( with some adapting ) and what model do you aim at, hehe my brother has a 156 V6 i can jank it out off his .

I allready have decently big injectors (370cc) of a Mercedes Benz i flow tested them and i have 6 good ones i have not installed them jet since my car is not leanin out at 10 psi jet, it might when i'm at 15 and that is the time to install them.

However, how much HP are you looking at for the 260? cause Non turbo HP qeusts on L series engines, are, compared to Turbo engines Running in the $ numbers?

I'm building ( for my 280zx N/A) a Flat top Piston F54 N42 with TB gutted Turbo AFM. Headers and straight exhaust ( r200 lsd Diff) i'm aiming at 150 rwhp, but it think that might be hoping for to much..But for 'real'HP goals i'll be using the Turbo

Still hope to see that set up once

The alfa TB is not a direct fit. not by a long shot. The reason I mentioned them is because they are BIG. And they are of a simple built. No emission stuf on there and no idle air. So they are a perfect candidate for some custom work.

I am aiming for about 170HP NA with my 260. This shouldn't be to hard. I have at the moment a 2.5 inch exhaust with a dynomax turbo muffler. This system is possibly to big for the Na engine but it was bought with a turbo swap in mind.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, I am about to start building my MS system. So one of you guys is using MSD for ignition? What about everyone else? I haven't decided whether to build a second MS to run MegaSpark (which will certianly be an easier decision once I've built the first one) or to buy something seperate. I'm going to be spoiled after having to spend so little on the fuel injection side though. Once I get it working I am going to have to talk to those guys about giving me the source to their PC programming/output software so I can start porting it to winCE and the .net framework. Then I can have a dash mounted PDA for additional output and on-the-fly programming.

if you want a nissan throttle body thats 70mm go for the N15 pulsar throttle...it'd just need a spacer to be made - 240SX throttle linkage is useable.
