dmanzo57
Alston 6-point NHRA roll bar with swing out side bars on both sides. :D :D Now I need to paint it and put the interior back together. I also need to get some seat belts for the street and a 5-point harness for the track. Don
mas28O
Don, does this roll bar kit put the main hoop in the stock 240z seat belt holes? I am looking for a kit right now but I want to keep my stock seet belts. Mike
dmanzo57
Mike, Yes, the plates that the main hoop is welded to cover the seat belt pockets. I'll try to get some pics of that area as well as the rear struts. Don
Guest 240hybrid
http://www.zcarparts.com They offer a 6 point that doesnt eliminate your stock seat belts. I used their kit and it went together nicely. Bending the 3/16" 6x6 plates was fun, used 12 ton press and profiler to get the bends right. you can see some pics in my personnal album here. mas28O
Don, how does the car feel before and after with the cage?
dmanzo57
Thanks guys. Mike, I haven't driven the car much since the roll bar was installed, but my first impression was that the car felt stiffer and the ride was harsher. I hope to get time this weekend to paint the bar and put the interior back together. Don
DavyZ
OK, now I feel safe enough to take a ride in your car! lol Looking good, Don! I was wondering when you would go the roll bar route. Going for 10's?!? Who did the fabrication and welding BTW? Davy
Guest gprix1
Cool! No more wiring your secondaries closed to prevent being kicked off the track You people think I'm kidding?
dmanzo57
I had a local shop do the install, Power Rods in Gilroy. He said he had people giving him a bad time about working on a foreign car. Then he'd pop the hood and show them the engine . I think the car has the HP to hit the high 10's. I just need to work on the 60' times. I've got a R200 LSD on the way that should help . Michael
Looks good – especially how the roll bar is pushed as far outboard as possible. In your second photograph – why not weld the roll bar/diagonal junction to the unibody sheet metal (at the front-bottom corners of the valence windows)? Then the roll bar doubles as a “B pillar” for the unibody – and the unibody acts as a shear web for the roll bar.

katman
Is there a diagonal in that main hoop?
dmanzo57
Is there a diagonal in that main hoop? No, Sir. It's not required by NHRA. Don
mas28O
Don What are you going to use for seat belts for the street? MIke
katman
Is there a diagonal in that main hoop? No, Sir. It's not required by NHRA. Don Should be. Without it it's just extra weight you can bang your helmet on. After seeing a bunch of these NHRA cages I wonder what it is they're really trying to protect you against. Good thing drag racers don't roll very often.
dmanzo57
Mike, I installed a set of lap belts from my '72 Nova. The retractors sit on top of the floor. They do prevent the seat from moving all the way back, but no more than the back brace of the roll bar. I think the shoulder strap from the Nova will work as well, but I am missing a couple of pieces. Don
dmanzo57
Katman, I'd like to think that NHRA has studied a few crashes over the years and determined that this type of bar is adequate. Wishful thinking? Don
Guest Your Car is Slow
Any reason you chose to bring the rear supports all the way to the back instead of tying them into the strut towers? (not knocking it or anything...im just looking at different ideas ) I had only ever seen 240 cages that attached to the strut towers..and then a horizontal bar going between the two towers as well.
