Guest szlash280z
ok, I know everyone reccomends the straight thru mufflers. from the research I have done, the only thing that is straight thru is a ricer muffler. Is a straight thru muffler just a bigger glaspack? there isn't much room for mufflers in the stock location. I don't have a cat or inspections for a cat so that space is empty. Has anyone ran a muffler in the cat location and then had plain pipe with a tip coming out the back after the 90* bends? would that look stupid without being able to see the muffler? what are the dimentions of a straight thru muffler that will fit in the stock location with 3" in and outs? how bad are those chambered mufflers on a turbo car?(flowmasters etc) I have just a downpipe right now, and I have no resistance at the gas pedal, is this because I have no exhaust/muffler? Guest szlash280z
a pic would be great! Brad D, does that muffler muffle the sound or or change the tone much?
Lockjaw
I dont' care if people think its rice, as long as it doesn't sound like rice. I run a hooker max flo 3 inch, its nice and quiet at idle, and well nothing sounds like an L6 when you are all in it. For a non-turbo, the straight thru is loud, I had a 2.5 inch version on an NA car, and when you hit it, people knew. Still didn't sound like rice. BRAD D
Quite at low RPM's and when you get on it in the high RPM's people know what it up. And then the HKS BOV sounds off and that also tells them whats up. I have never had the RB hooked up to some thing else, so I can not say if it change the tone much. JMortensen
Super Turbos are $35.96 at JC Whitney (just checked). Local exhaust place wanted $80 when I did mine a few years ago. Jon
Scottie-GNZ
Do generalize all straight-thru mufflers as glasspacks or some of the ricer mufflers. Some of the ricer mufflers are intentionally built to make that sound. As Brad said, a Dynomax UltraFlow is a straight-thru but very quiet and one of the best on the market. From my experience, avoid the Flowmaster 2-chamber. That was the 1st muffler I put on my L28ET and I threw it in the garbage after 1 week as my nerves were shot from the drone and noise, and on a turbo engine no less. Seriously, look into the UltraFlow. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. They now make a non-SS version which is less costly. BTW, as much as possible, try to get at least 6" of tailpipe on the muffler to help with the sound.
SleeperZ
I've seen flow charts of the Ultra flow versus lots of competitors, even the Super Turbo. Nothing flows even close to the Ultraflow with the same backpressure, including the Super Turbo (flows about half). The Flowmasters are pathetic - but they are popular with the V8 folks, partly because they are used in pairs, and they generally don't run as much power either (normally aspirated, that is.)
