MagnaFlow mufflers

my local shops seem to only carry MagnaFlow, none carry Dynomax. I was playing with one of their MagnaFlow straight thru oval shaped mufflers today, it was really high quality. it didn't have the cheese grater crap like those resonators I was looking at.

Anyone ever run one of these MagnaFlow mufflers?

yea i run a magnaflow..and its loud..mainly because i dont run a resonator so its just a straight pipe back to the muffler. but before i cut my resonator off it wasnt loud at all

Magnaflows are great flowing mufflers i think the only ones pretty much that flo better are the Dynomax UltraFlows.. I have a 3" in/out magnaflow on my sierra and love it

cool, N/A engines with no mufflers are much louder than Turbo's for some reason. So the magnaflow in theory should muffle it fine for my turbo engine. (I hope!)

Magnaflows work very well with turbos, my '75 likes mine. Deep, mellow sound, but still free flowing, just don't let them talk you into a resonator like the muffler shop tried to do with me. He was amazed how quiet mine was when we were done.

Turbo motors are quieter, because the turbo itself muffles the exhaust noise. On the Magnaflow note, they are really good mufflers. The resonators are supposed to really help with noise suppression if you are interested in it. Borla is another good manufacturer. They make the same type of non-louvered, straight through muffler.

The Magnaflow stuff on NA motors seems to be quiet off idle, but then really open up as the motor revs higher. Like I said, the turbo will quiet it down, so you won't need to worry about it.

Edit: Forgot to add something.

I had mine installed, 3" pipe, 3" in out magnaflow muffler. It has a very nice idle sound, and it is very very quiet even when jumping into the gas! The magnaflow muffled the crap outta my engine! It's kinda nice!

What do you guys think about Flowmaster?

I have a turbo. Will that be too loud at 4000RPM ?

DON'T use a Flowmaster with a turbo. For one, they don't flow well, and two, they resonate horribly (chambered style). I hated my chambered muffler for those two reasons.

Depends if you get the three chamber or two chamber design. With exhaust, as I understand it (especially with turbos) you want nothing blocking the gasses coming out. The Flowmasters have "chambers" that change the sound to that nice rumble, but block air flow. Magnaflow, Borla, and I think Dynomax, along with others make a straight through muffler. It keeps the gasses flowing and makes for a good sound. Magnaflow isn't that expensive, is quiet on idle, and they all carry a lifetime warranty. The turbo will keep the exhaust quiet too. The Neon SRT-4's have no muffler, which is a testament to how much a turbo can quiet a motor.

Hi, my exhaust installer isn't really telling me whether to use the Manaflow straight pipe exhaust or the street style. The site has two or three different model lines...can anyone tell them apart for me, like loud, louder, obnoxious (definitely don't want the last!). I'm running an 83 280ZXTurbo, about to put on a custom exhaust system, and this last piece should be obvious from other replies already here, but I don't see the different models being named (the web site doesn't even have sound files for the straight pipe muffler!).

Ivan and I are running nearly identical exhaust setups. We both have 3" from the turbo all the way back. He is running a Magnaflow and I am running a Dynomax. The cars sound nearly identical. My car sounds beautiful at idle, nice deep rumble and really isnt very loud at cruising speeds about 2800-3000 like on the interstate. The only time that it gets loud is when first accelerating at like 2000 rpms or so, then once the revs go up the car gets quieter. Anyways I love it and it certainly made a performance diff.

..so what is the Magnaflow trade name for the style of Magnaflow muffler...is it a straight pipe muffler (which I think is called Street straight or something), or one of their other lines?

Thanks

John
