JoeinCA
Hey guys, I am leaving for Wyoming next week and i need to figure out how to get my Z, my TV, my computer, my clothes, my amp/cab/bass, and some tools to wyoming. I have looked into renting a truck and a trailer, but the minimum seems to be about $1 per mile. (between 1200 and 1600) That is a little pricey for my taste. especially since they are charging half that for the reverse trip. If anyone has any good ideas, they would be much appreciated. thank you for your time, Joe
Guest Aaron
Did you look into a Ryder or U-Haul truck? For that much stuff, you could rend one of thier small trucks and a trailer. Last time I rented (~6 years ago), the Ryder was more expensive per day, but cheaper per mile than U-Haul.
auxilary
I hauled an rx7 from oregon to bay area (670 mile total trip). Rented a uhaul truck with a full dolly (so the car sat on it, not just a 2 wheel version where the rear wheels roll) for $360. This included insurance, truck rental, dolly rental, 800 mile one way package. Make sure to specify 1way. Just expect to pay $$ for gas. I think the trip from oregon cost us $190 in gas alone about 2 years ago.

Guest cbrunberg
I don't know how much you have to move, but I just helped some friends move to Flagstaff, AZ from Sacramento, CA. I pulled trailer for them. $19.95 a day (U-Haul) if you return the trailer to it's home. An extra $150 one way. Do you have a pick up? You could also ship some items with UPS and take a small amount in your car. Maybe even ship in a crate as freight. Be creative. Invite a friend with a pickup to co drive with you there and back towing a trailer, with the time and money you save do a little site seeing so your friend has some incentive. My excuse was I hadn't see the Grand Canyon, now I have, and helped my neighbors in the process. Carl
JoeinCA
Unfortunately i dont have any friends.... with suitable pickup trucks. I think i may try to rent a nice big truck or SUV and a 4 wheel dolly, and see if i can take them one way, if not, then my friend probably could drive back... That may be the cheapest route... denny411
I would buy a cheap truck, rent a tow dolly for 1 way, Pack the datsun full of whatever you don`t want to get wet, put all the big stuff in the back of the truck, then resell the truck when you get there. Guest Want aZ
My son and his wife just relocated from Atlanta to Miami, rented a truck and trailer to haul his jeep. Cost him about $450 one way, somewhere around 850 miles one way. Just check around a reasonable rate can be found. Damon
Guest cbrunberg
Joe I found its like renting a car. The price varies depending on who, when and where. The weekends and holidays are more expensive. My neighbors trip 775 miles one way to Flagstaff with a U-hual or Buget varied from 685.00 to 483.00 ( after a rebate or refund) they were both the same up front but budget offered some back after delivery. I wound up driving because they didn't have a charge card for the rental. Try different companies with a rental between tues and thurs. 3 days should be enough time. Also the further ahead sometimes the better the price don't be afid to ask when the cheapest rate is and if next week is better. See what happens. ps I like the buy a truck here and sell it there idea. That's what my parents did when we were kids. There also might be a web BBL of people moving that might share expenses and driving with you. Just Brain storming! Good luck! If I weren't so tied up I'd go just for the drive. David K
Joe, I recommend purchasing a cheap truck down here in cali. See if Wyoming has strict smog laws. If they dont, buy a truck that wont pass California smog. Since you are moving to Wyoming, you for sure might need a truck to begin with. So purchasing a cheap truck down here in Cali may be the ticket. Also, you dont NEED to take your Z with you on this trip. Im sure there are cool enough guys on this board that will let you park it for a few weeks at their place. You can then get a cheap one way ticket and fly down, and drive your Z back home. All of what i mentioned is probably cheaper than renting a truck from a rental store. Good Luck
JoeinCA
If i dont bring the car with me, it will feel like i have failed... Plus i am not sure that the transmission is going to live through the 1500 mile drive... I think i am going to have to convince my dad to buy an 80s suburban with a trailer hitch... That way i will have something to drive around in the snow, so i can leave my Z at the Wyotech campus, or in storage through the winter. I figure that i can convince him that i will need the truck one way or the other, and that i can sell it as soon as i am done in Wyoming. On top of that, i cant renew the registration in california because the vehicle is not smog legal here. The registration expires this month. I need to re-register it in Wyoming as soon as i get there. Does anyone know someone selling a cheap suburban or pickup? thanks, Joe

gramercyjam
Back when I was a poor struggling drummer, I moved from NY to NC in my 'Cuda for a band job. Bought some 2X4's and some lag bolts and bolted up the 2X4's a huge cargo carrier across the roof with 2X4 legs on the front and rear bumpers and covered it all up with a tarp. I put all my stuff on the roof, including my drums, band equipment, welder, tool boxes, stereo, clothes, etc etc. But the 'Cuda had a 440 and plenty of power and air shocks in the back so weight didn't sag the suspension. I was kinda worried the cops would pull me over, seeing something like that going down the Interstate, but they never did. --John

blueovalz
I actually drove my car up into the back of the large Ryder (with all my other household goods, and dropped the truck off at my destination.
