I think someday the Miata will be remembered for its autocross legacy (hate to say legacy, but they're popular and sucessful) ...

 

BUT...It'll always be a chick car to me. Besides, Mazda didn't exactly forge new ground, the Miata has done nothing first, nor best.

 

The Miata wouldn't exist if Nissan hadn't made the 240Z.

I'll rephrase my point:

 

Nissan was the first Japanese carmaker to try thier hand at making an affordable performance vehicle designed specifically to appeal to the American market. If Nissan didn't do it, I'm sure another manufacturer would have eventually. But it's plain to see how they pushed the envelope for Japanese automakers, which up till that point made mostly just econobox commuters. And you can bet the other manufacturers were watching, then COPYING Nissans model for success, simply because it worked.

 

Look at the Toyota Celica, or the Mazda RX series. they both owe thier success to the Z, each debuting just a few years after the 240Z, and each very similar.
