Should I bother !!! Lt1

Recommended Posts

Hi guys !! Question for you , chevy guys :D

I did a search and didn't find what I want. Today at the JY, I found two caprice that were hit in the rear.( reason why they were at the jy, I presume  ) Those are 96 cars, so they have LT1 engine in them, and auto trans. ( from what I read )

I'm not ready to put an engine in my car, but is 100$ US, or 150$ can, a good deal with all the accessories, ecu, wiring alter...

It is clean, no oil loss, and has a good and equal compression when I turn it by hand.

Thanks guys for your imput !!

No there are a few more differences between the all of the LT1's....The Camaro LT1's have a better cam, alluminium heads, and most likely higher compression(10.5:1 in the Camaro I dont know what the Caprices had?) The Camaro LT1 was rated at 285HP while the Caprice is rated at 265HP......now the Corvette has yet an even better cam, better flowing heads than the Camaro and even higher compression(10.8:1). I think the Corvette was rated at 320HP?

If your going to leave it stock then all this may matter to you but if your going to end up putting after market parts on(heads, cam, pistons, etc) then this really doesnt matter. The iron heads on the Caprice supposedly flow better than the alluminim heads but they also weigh twice as much! and it a Z any saved weight upfront is a good thing!

Do some more searching on here in and go too http://www.lt1tech.com if you want more info on the LT1.

Not all cop cars are LT1's be forewarned. Some are the 4.3 litre L99. Just a heads up.... Displacement will be cast on the drivers side of the bellhousing flange (5.7 or 4.3) Also, look for LT1 on the option sheet stuck to the inside of the trunk lid.

Make sure that the car is a Caprice CLASSIC or Caprice Classic LTZ or SS and Cop car Caprice because they are the only ones with the LT1 in them....at least i think they are. The regular caprice came with 305 in the earlier ones and 4.3 later. The 5.7 came in the Classic only and the earlier LTZ which became the SS later.

Listen to 80LT1. There are many differences between the b-body and F-body LT1's. Some Caprices had the LT1's smaller cousin, the L99 (265 ci). Also, all Caprices had iron heads which are heavier and dissipate less heat, but you can hog them out a lot more because of the strength of the iron vs. AL. Here's some info from a friend of mine:

Yeah their is a baby LT1 which is 10168588 casting it had the numbers "4.3" cast on the side of the block too. If the heads are off its real easy to tell since it has a small 3.74" bore. Now if its a standard 350 iron LT1 then you will see different casting #'s on the heads which were 10125320 or 12554290 castings depending on the year, with the 125...etc being I think the 96 version. Also the cam is different "milder" and setup for low end torque, and will have the #'s "600" or "779" stamped on the cam in front of the first lobe.

  • 1 year later...

I've searched, but somewhere in this thread I thought someone had a short block L99 that was headed to scrap unless someone claimed it. I've been looking for a L99 crank and rods for several months. Is there anything out there. The idea is to use my existing LT1 stuff (spun bearings on crank) with the smaller crank and longer rods to creat a long rod 300CI LT1 that would work with a big or little turbo. Project after project after project.

Here is a link for the differences. As mentioned look on block for 5.7 NOT 4.3 Litter. Though even 4.3 is a steal at that price

Read differences

The main difference is heads aluminum/iron (Corvette's also have 4 bolt mains). There are also primarily 2 cams, the reason for different hp ratings is mostly intake and exhaust, and the need for Corvette to be king. The highest LT1 was Corvette of 300 RWHP, same year Camaro had 285 rating.

The iron heads are fine. I was given a set free from someone who wrongly thought they were junk. Truth is they are easy to make into 2.02/1.6 heads and will out flow the aluminum with mild porting and definately with larger valves. Iron does weigh 50lbs more but easy to overcome the weight in a Z. The short blocks are all the same, the compression ratios are the same. the iron heads have larger chambers and Chevy used a smaller gasket to achieve the same CR.

Good luck, also I would get both transmissions you will make enough to easily pay for one LT1 and transmission with what you make on other. Could even rebuild it for what you will make.

Good luck
