Who's done the Toyota upgrade and are you happy?

This is my next project. The brakes on the front of my 260z are horrible. I'm just going to buy the 82-84 toyota 4x4 calipers and a good set of pads. Also I'm having the stock rotors turned. I'm not going to be road racing, so I don't need vented rotors or anything. I've read opinions about the Toyota upgrade and for the money it seems it can't be beat.

I haven't been able to get the brake bias right with the Toy calipers, but I'm running 79 280ZX rear disc with it. I think the rear disc can't keep up. I also constantly boil the brake fluid, but that is at the track, which yours won't be subjected to.

 

If I have one recommendation it is Brembo cross drilled rotors which I got from PowerStop. I think I would actually go for the slotted knowing what I know now, but I have thoroughly abused the rotors, I think I've boiled the brake fluid 5 times with these rotors on the car and they still aren't warped!!!

if this is for solid rotor i have done it before and i liked it alot.

you dont get the feeling like you are about to lock up the brakes going downhill at 25mph. It actually takes a lot less pedal to stop in the car in all situations, makes driving an old car a little more fun i think. I did steel brake lines and swapped to a larger master cylinder at the same time, and it was great. for added stopping power, i used metal master pads, which i think helped with the fade issue some.

Dont know if drilled rotors do very much, I run some right now, (brand unknown, got them off a parts car) and the only thing i can notice is that they make this great cheese grater noise when i hit the brakes. On this car i use stock system, with steel lines and new friction materials, it does stop ok, but I do know its limits, and may do the solid rotor 4 piston upgrade once again, it really does take 20 minutes once the car is jacked up!

I did same upgrade staying with the drums in the rear. Significant improvement in stopping power. If you have the time & money you might want to invest in an adjustable proportioning valve so you can play with the front/rear bias until it's where you like it. Not necessary, especially for daily driving, but something to think about.

Hey Bill. The Z is coming a long nicely. I removed that body kit, and found a complete chrome rear bumper. Next is brakes and lowering by 1inch. Then wheels/Tires. The motor I may be getting is a 355 with Dart Sportsmen II heads, forged internals, with a Comp Cam Extreme energy cam. Its got a Victor Jr and holley 780, but I'm selling that and going with a holley stealth ram. Its in my dads S10 right now, and was in one of my 69 firebirds before that. So I'm familiar with with engine and what it can do. I ran a 12.2 1/4 with that engine in my 69 bird with a 3speed and open 3.08 rear. Should be scary in my Z.. :D

 

I may put rear discs on later, but thats after the V8 swap.
