Turn signal problem...please help

Guest PBooty

I got my head unit installed today, and I think the peeps at circuit city accidentally did something to my wiring underneath the center console.

My right turn signal works fine, but when i go to use my left one it just stays on, but doesn't blink. After rumaging through all the wires i found the harness for the turn signals (I think). When I disconnect it, neither turn signals work. When I connect it, only the right one works properly, and the left one stays lit but doesn't blink.

Please help...

ps. sorry for being so long-winded :P

Ok..the "adjustment" of the hazard switch didn't work. Or I didn't adjust it well enough.

I riped out all the wires and reconnected them out side the dash.

As far as I can tell all the connections are good. The only problem I can find is that the connection on the left is missing a wire. In the picture you see a red wiring connecting to a green wire. At this junction 2 wires are suppose to merge into the green. I can't for the life of me find the other wire that should go there. Could this missing wire be the problem?

Is there anything else I should try?

This problem is really annoying!! :x

I agree with jasonfen. Sounds just like my Z and a few others that had bad hazard switches. I replaced mine, but I fixed a friend's. Instead of beating the crap out of it (don't really know what that would do other than make you feel better), we flipped the switch several hundred times in an attempt to clean the contacts. Worked on her 240.

Ok..i'll try the flipping of the switch thing, but if after 10 mins of switching and it doesn't work..I'm gonna stop :?

Can someone confirm if my wires are connected properly? Or better yet, can someone please tell me what the red, green, and black wires on the left in my picture do? I disconnect them, and I don't de any difference. The missing wire is buggin though :(

ok the hazard switch works, i took it apart and re-soldered the connections. When the hazard is switched, both blinkers blink when they are supposed to. When the hazard is off, the circuit is still closed so it can be turned on by the turn signal switch on the steering column. But still the problem remains, right signal works, left doesn't!!

My experience was that the hazards always worked fine, but the blinker would not flash in one direction or the other. The problem was not the soldered connections, but rather the rocker contacts inside. I tried to pull several of the 240 hazard switches apart, but the metal tabs would just crumble when you tried to pry on them. So IMO it could still be the hazard switch, but I was also working on 240's and not 280's.

I hate stupid problems like that where it should be a simple fix but isn't. Good luck with it.

HTH,

Have you tried taking the TS switch apart and looking at the contact points? Could be the problem. Mine is funky and need sto be wiggled once in a while to work. Also look at all the connections...is there any corrosion in the connectors? High resistance from corroded connectors could also be a problem. What did you have done? A radio installed?

I had the same problem with my 280 after it sat for a lot of years. The hazard switch can make the turn signals do funky things. I unplugged the hazard switch and poured rubbing alcohol in it and worked it a bunch of times, let it dry out and everything worked fine. The turn signal switch itself started causing problem some time later. I took it apart and cleaned it good and put some dielectric grease on it before putting it back together. It has been working for several months, but it is now acting up again. I am going to try one more time to salvage it because a replacement is shamefully expensive. Good luck.

on a side note..i took my car back to circuit city to have them correct the installation (they mixed up the constant-12volt and switched voltage wires :x )...and now when i signal for a turn my head unit turns off and on with the blinking signal.

so now..

my left turn signal turns on but doesn't blink

my right turn works properly

both turn signals control my stereo head unit :x

hazards turns on/blinks.

The answer is much easier now... Take it back there and insist they fix it. If it worked prior to your visit then they are obviously responsible. If you have the resources, and do not trust the 16 year olds who work at circut city, take it to a electrical shop, have them fix the problem, and then have someone eles, prefeably a lawyer give them the reciept with promises to sue if they don't pay up!! Sounds like a lot to do but if they are responsible, that is why they carry insurance!!

the initial turn signal problem wasn't circuit city's fault, i think.

What had happened was, I disconnect all the wires underneath the center console as well disconnected the center console. I did all this to get wires out of the way, to make it easier for the tech foo to make the installation. I was concerned with them breaking my console. After the installation was done, I took the car back home and reconnected all the wires. I'm pretty sure I connected all the wires correct since there is only one way to connect most of the harnesses. The only wires I'm iffy about are the black red and green wires that I previously mentioned (see previously posted pic).

As far as the turn signal wireing the only one to blame is, i guess me  ...but I have nothign to do with hooking up my stereo to turn on and off with the turn signals, that's for damn sure :!:
