GM Crate ZZ4 and Muncie M21 Questions

Recommended Posts

I to am new to Hybrid Z and have a couple of questions. (I hope 2 questions at once are ok?)

Has anyone installed the GM performance parts ZZ4 and if so did the JTR recommended block hugger headers work with the angle plug heads?

Also, the JTR recommends a T5 transmission but it doesn;t appear to be rated for the output of the ZZ4. I have a Muncie M21 and wonder if this can be used. The JTR mentions them but only goes into details regarding the T5 and doesn't mention whether or not the M21 will fit and if so what shifter to use etc. Lakewood does make a bellhousing with an Hydraulic clutch attachment to accept the M21 straight up.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

The L98 heads are funny, but there are some shorty headers that will work with the GM angle plug heads. The M21 will work, but IMO it is not the best choice unless you are building a road racer. The M20 or BW Super T10 are much better suited to the 3.54 gear set. The Lakewood scattershield with the Camaro slave is a good choice. Another option is the 84-87 Corvette bellhousing with integral slave. It too is written up in the JTR manual. At least in my older ones. I would think a Hurst Competition Plus for a first gen Camaro would work. THe hurst has removeable sticks and you could find one of many that would work from their catalog if the first gen stick didn't. The first gen moves the shift handle towards the center of the trans where the Z hole is while the 2nd gen offsets it to the side. The 68-74 Corvette shifter is well centered also.

Welcome to the forum.

I have the ZZ4 with a 700r4. For headers I used Hooker blockhuggers for D-port angled plugs # 2100 (I think). The steering shaft clears the header by about 3/8 of an inch. Dist. 1/2 inch from firewall and I did not use the JTR spacers under the crossmember .

Check out the pics in the WWW below.

Good luck on your project

Mike

Mike S, you have a killer car...and about the nicest exhaust system I have ever seen--all stainless, no?

From the angle it looks like the sparkplug boot will touch the header...but you have already check that right? What is the clearance with the boot on?
