nullbound
there are three bolts holding each one in, if i recall correctly. all you have to do is unbolt them and they come right out. the fronts are easy. it's the the rear shocks that are more of a pain. Mikelly
You, that would be correct... three bolts per side... They slide right out from the frame rail! Mike

Guest scarab260z
in my 260 i had to take mine out for body kits there are 2 bolts on each side of the car under the carpet inside the hatch and three under neath the car.On the front side of the shock is a small screw look away from the screw un screw it slowly untill you here the gas realeasing when you first start to here gas stop unscrewing and wait for the hiss to stop once it stops theres no more gas in the shock doing this is neccesary to remove it after this on the back side of the shock is a small bolt in the center un screw it as neccisary each time pulling the shock away from its sleeve untill its seperated enough to get it out i had to do this because once i got it unbolted no matter which way i turnd it it wouldnt come out.but after i realeased the gas i was able to seperate the shock some so it would come out dont release the gas if you plan on putting the same shock back in im guessing 280z is the same as 260 exept the bumper is a little bit heavier because the government got more strict on safty regs try it let me know if it worked Dont try it if you dont feel the need to do all this you may find a easier way but it worked for me just be sure you dont unscrew the pressure release screw to much it will go flying under pressure (better safe than sorry)
Guest ON3GO
is it bad that i took the pressurized air out the the shocks?? mike

john kosmatka
I was wondering how to work my rear bumper shocks out, never thought about letting the gas out. Thanks
datsunlover
Heh.. I took my rear shocks out with a crowbar, hammer and vice-grips! Yah.. my car was pretty rusty back there.. the flat areas where the bolts held the bumper shocks on pretty much disintegrated underneth! I'll have to get some pics... you should see the looks I get from people when I show them whats left of the shocks!
EvilRufusKay
Heh.. I took my rear shocks out with a crowbar, hammer and vice-grips! I cut the ends off with a sawzall...it was sawzallawwwzum!!! Just like most wounds ..they bled for a while but got over it!!! I will wail untill I cut out the rear of my 1/4's for the flares so the brackets will be easier to get out. RedNeckZ
Removing the shocks for the bumpers isn't that hard. The fronts are three bolts per side and they drop out. The rear are harder to do. On the side away from the gas door, you can reach up into the area and remove the three bolts. You, then can work the shock out of the hole. It may take some time and work, but it can be done (I have done this a few times now). Now comes the hard part. First you need to raise the back of the car and support it with jack stands. Then move the jack over and under the gas tank. Place a piece of wood between the jack and gas tank. Raise the tank a small distance and loosen the nuts holding the gas tank to the car. Do not remove the nuts. You just want enough movement in the tank, so that you can lower it enough so that you can reach into that area. You then lower the tank until you can reach up and into the area above the tank. It will be tight but workable. Use a rachet and socket wrench to get to the bolts. You may also have to use a extention on the ratch. Now remove the bolts. After that you are going to need to move the shock around a little (back and forth) to remove it. Once you get it out, you can tighten the nuts back up on the gas tank. The hardest thing you have to do is to remove those bolts in a very tight place. Good Luck, Rich.
