Georgia Flash
Hey guys, I need some advice on buying a tap and die set to work on my Z. I will be ordering on line tomorrow so give it to me. Who has a good set that they use on the Z? I have a cheapo one from Home Depot but none of the things work for any of my nuts and bolts on the Z. VRJoe
You should check out ENCO, I've found their prices are pretty good. Here's a link http://www.use-enco.com/ They've got all kinds of quality tools. I have some cheap sets, so what I do is buy the top of line when I need to replace one, that way I slowly replace all the taps and dies. If you need some quick Sears Craftsman aren't too bad, also the more expensive ones at Home Depot aren't too bad either. - Joe

Guest Aguyandaredhead
2 words.....SNAP ON...... Man I bet this opens up a can of worms. Ok let the flames begin. No seriously I have been wrenching on cars for 15 years and I started on Craftsman that my dad had when I ws younger. I really don't have anything bad to say about them it is just that when I think of the the Snap On tools I own (read alot of them) I can only say great things about every one of them. If you have the extra cash buy Snap On and you will never have to buy the same tool twice. Given you don't abuse them (anymore than I do). JMortensen
I bought a set of Matco taps and dies. Then I went to my machinist to do my last rebuild, and he said they were crap. Then again, he pays about $40 per tap. I paid $110 for the whole set on sale, and I'm not a machinist... Jon
Synlubes
The craftsman sets would be a good start and like Joe said when a replacement is needed, upgrade. I have a Mac set that I’ve had for probly 15 years and a craftsman set for about 12 years. The craftsman pieces dull after some hard usage. The Mac (matco, snap-on) stuff is better but not necessary for the limited user
Georgia Flash
Thanks guys, I think I will go to Sears and see what Craftsman has to offer. It seems like I have checked there before but didn't find anything. As for the Home Depot items, they only had the one that I bought and that was it. There was no high dollar set there only the cheapo set. I have seriously thought about the Snap On brand because I have used one of these before when I attended vo-tech school and it worked great! Thanks again for the input.
