Guest Looking for apt in Alb Ny
I was cruising along at about 35 mph and I hear this funny noise like chipmunks gathering nuts. Well it sounded more like aluminum foil being krinkled around. I start to smell tranny fluid as I pull into my mothers driveway. I look under the hood and there is a pool of tranny oil all over. Man I was telling myself that sucks It happened out of the blue. How could this have happened. It broke through the casing. Can I easily repair it? I have a 4 speed tranny. ANy ideas? I carry my camera everywhere I go as you can see thanks Juan oh and by the way I made a short vid. It shows the billet fuel rails getting bored out .just bringing you entertainment. http://www.jskinnovations.com/jsk%207.wmv

SleeperZ
Ouch, bad tranny. I'd be looking for a new one, maybe go for a 5-speed. I'm not sure case repairs are going to be worth trying to fix - you can get a good used unit for less than $100.

Oh I know not to fix the front plate. Im searching for a 5 speed currently. A t5 with the turbo clutch and driveshaft would be nice about now. I was posting this for tech info and not looking for a tranny through the forum. I have placed a WTB at zcar.com. Thanks Juan
Drax240z
You can buy the front plates (at least for the T5) directly from nissan. I think the T5 ones are about $100US.
260DET
Not uncommon on the earlier Nissan 5 speeds, the front counter shaft bearing comes loose in the housing and spins its way through the front cover. From around the early/mid 80's they used a bigger bearing which seems to have solved that problem. If you have access in the US to the later model Nissan, not BW, boxes off a slant type motor then that may be your answer. At present I'm adapting an import RB20DET gearbox to suit, they also have the Z close ratios except for first gear. As far as I know the later boxes all have a different and better shift mechanism, easily identified in that the lever mounts in a plate which uses six bolts to attach to the rear housing. Guest Looking for apt in Alb Ny
Im sorry. This is an 82 na tranny that got busted up. I meant to say that I have a 4 speed from a 76 available. it probably woudnt be worth while to see if I can swap parts for a temp fix.? Thanks Juan
260DET
As I said that is a Nissan box in the photo, not a BW T anything. I've never seen a Nissan 4 speed but I'm guessing that the front plate would be similar, subject to the changed bearing size previously mentioned. Check it visually. If you are going to just replace the front plate at least make sure that the exposed bearing is ok and that there is a circular shim present. It sits between the bearing's outer race and the front plate. There are several different thickness shims..............
Doug71zt
You can use the front case and front cover from your 4 spd to repair the 5spd - It's the same parts. I think that you may find that the main countershaft brg in the bearing plate (on the split line of the cases) has lost its cage and some balls. I would re-bearing the countershaft, measure and order the correct shim from Nissan, and carry on. Doug
mjfawke
I'd give up on this box. The layshaft bearings are notorious for breaking up, and usually the layshaft gets broken when the bearing fails. The later cases (RB/CA/SR series etc.) run a bigger layshaft bearing to get around this problem - but for the L series boxes, you cannot get a heavy duty bearing, as it is a custom size made specifically for Nissan. Converting to a 280ZX T5 is the best solution.
