datsunlover
Man I love my Z! It's running way rich, boging a bit, and has slow leaks in the front tires, but I didnt care! Me and a friend ,the guy who helped me the WHOLE way along with my car (went with me to pick it up when I bought it, and was here all along till it rolled out last week) and I went for a drive last night to a nearby city (40 min drive) and I am STILL smiling! Cruised down a 'main drag' and had a bunch of ppl yell out 'nice car' or RIGHT ON MAN!! and other variations.. Some interesting looks from the ladies too.. Here's the funny part.. I tried to play with a few cars, and NO ONE would go me! Saw a race start between two civics, so I caught up, passed the trailing one, and went up beside the lead car.. hee looked over, gave a bit of gas, so I thought."All right! it's on!" I drop a gear, put it down.....But.. no... I started to pull easily, and he just gave up. Aww... ok, keep cruising... Meet up with a 93 or so Cavileir at a light; Big wing, mufler, 2.8V6 (you can tell by the sound.. heh heh.. like it's under water ) he looks over, revs, I rev... light goes green... I give him a head start... then hammer down, pull past as I shift into 2nd, and ... huh? He backs off... that sucked.. This was all late at night, with no trafic, and not through residential areas btw.. but heck, I never even got over 60MPH for anyof it! Anyway, my buddy had a video camera on for most of the fun, so hopefully we can put together a little movie sometime. Just wanted to share.. Guest bastaad525
THAT"s what I need... darn video camera... get my wife to tape something. I too finally had some FUN driving my Z day before yesterday... been a long while since I've had any 'challenges' and then I get three in one day... a primer grey civic hatchback with body kit and huge muffler (the boxy kinds... early 90's I believe?)... we raced from three lights (I dont know why this guy didn't give up after the first... he had NO chance) and then some black '80's porsche decided to join in at the 3rd light and he also got smoked pretty bad (even beat by the civic... whaaaaa???). Later that day I kept getting taunted by this 90's white Camaro SS who was driving like a nut... finally we hit a red and to my amazement I was able to pull on this guy... it was pretty even off the line but by the time I shifted into 3rd I had gotten half a car on him but let off as I *my wife* didn't want to be going that fast on the street... she was with me for both and she REALLY doesn't like me racing with her in the car... urrrrrrrrghhh Best day I've had in the Z in months. auxilary
j-bodies never had a 2.8 v6. late 80s to early 90s had 3.1L v6s that came in berettas and luminas. Newer models had the 2.2L ecotec and 2.4L that came in the Z24s, and now they're all 2.2L
datsunlover
Um, yah they did. In Canada anyway.. A friend of mine used to have an 89 Cavy Wagon with the 2.8, and there are probly about 100 of them driving around here this year.. it's like all the kids that cant afford a civic, buy a cavileir and put the same crap all over them... Guest 2slo4u
Yeah, a guy came to our store about a year ago to get some amps installed in his cavalier. He came from way up north close to canada and his car had a v6 decal on it. I thought he just stuck it on like all of the Hemi and Z-71 wannabes. When he left and we opened the hood to install the power wiring, IMAGINE THAT a v6. I don't remember the liter size but it actually sounded pretty cool when it was running. Just had a few exhaust leaks. Maybe it was a "type C" ha, ha. 81zxturbo 95slobaruimpreza1.

waynekarnes
had a z/24 89 caviler, yes ... all stock 2.8 V6, and no slouch. even with the automatic, no problem trounching a stock 240z. i think in 91, they went to the 3.1 liter V6. which kicks butt on the 2.8, though it doesn't seem to wind as fast, has a sort of wheezing sound ( stock one's anyway ). what ya running under the hood of your z ? if you took either the 2.8 or the 3.1, you've got some muscle under it !!! i drove Mr Bien's 71 240z, with a 280zx turbo 2.8 , intercooler, modified ignition, large bore, custom injectors, 5 speed. getting on the 280 freeway, doing around 40 mph down the on ramp, stood on it, wound it up to 6200, in 2nd, banged off 3rd, passing cars doing 65 as if they were standing still, 4th gear, easily over 120, into 5th and backed off around 135 mph. this in under 5 seconds. talk about an E ticket ride ... i want one !!! does a 12 second 1/4 mile at sacto race track, street tires and street exhaust. he thinks will dip into the 11's with slicks, but he already busted 2 rear ends, while testing with slicks, and snapped two half shafts. you are right, it sure is fun to go out hunting in a fast 240z, most of the ricers can't believe that their doors just fell off, as the z goes by. be careful out there !! DatsunBoy77
he cavalier was advailable with a V6 in the Z24 model in the early 90's. I still cat understand how it was a z24 with a v6. I get people in my work with em all the time. As a matter of fact i believe it was a 2.8 and it was actually advailable in Z24 and non Z24 models. Just a little off-topic information from your local parts guy.
datsunlover
Oh yah, like I sad.. a friend of mine had a 2.8 in a cavy WAGON! Didnt look like much, but man that stupid thing would go! I couldn't touch him in my 2.0L 200sx for straightline speed, but hee hee.. I could corner better. He took a corner one day at about 45MPH (trying to follow me as I '4 wheel drifted' through the turn) and diched it. Almost rolled it actually... And I remember when I had my first car, an 81 280zx (base model, no power anything, open exhast, lead foot, ect) I raced an 89 or so Cavileir w/2.8 and I BARELY go by him in 3d gear.. I think all the weight of his stereo + bad shifting is all that let me get by! Waynekarnes; As for my car, its a 75 280z. 2.8L (probly close to actuall 2.8L now, from the rebuild done before I owned it) with 72 SU's, 280zx dizzy, and open exhast. Ive also diched the heavy bumpers, all emisions and FI related stuf.. I figure the 4 speed gives me a slight advantage, plus the tires I'm running are a bit too short (smaller diameter, easier to turn) And the Cavy, I'm sure it was a 2.8, and I could tell it was auto. I dont think the guy was really trying at first, which would explain how easily I pulled up to him.. then as he got on it, and I took 2nd gear (perfect shift, felt like driving a race car.. ) My hood lifted and I pulled by at about 4k rpm... I know what it sounds like IN the car, and I can imagine what it must be like to be beside me when I shift like that.. Maybe the guy figured I had WAY more power than I do, and that's why he backed off. Really, I expected to have to work a bit more to make that kill... waynekarnes
ahhhh a 280z ... a horse of another color ! didn't mean to sound like i was knocking your z, or doubting your z tail. was thinking, i know what the 2.8 and the 3.1 can do in a Z/24. is impressive when a z car pulls away from em. wanted to get in on your secrets, was wondering what combo you were running, get an idea for possible future exploration. in 81, had a 79 280zx GL, all stock under the hood, jump on it, butt in gets squatty, front lifts, looks like one of the old drag racers digging in, expecting the front wheels to come off the ground. grab second, ass end all squatty again, chirp the tires, engine winds up again ... might not have been all that fast, but it was a good show, and a few people that clearly could have easily cleaned my clock, chose not to tangle. kinda like a butterfly that looks like a poisonous moth. i'm running a 350 V8 and vette 4 speed ( scarab ) in a 72 z. but, i tell you, even though i know it costs bunches of " more money " than a V8 swap, that turbo z was hair on the back of my neck standing straight up, fun !!! it is neat to see a stock z kick butt on one of those clowns with the coffee can taped to the end of his exhaust pipe. keep up the good work, showing em the tail lights. but be careful and stay safe ! oh, in texas, a small town called the state troopers and requested that the troopers remove the radar speed detector read out sign they had placed to alert drivers as to how fast they were going, in a 45 zone. seems the local kids had figured out, no one was around, and were using it to get an accurate measurement as to, just who really did have the fastest car in town. datsunlover
Thats cool man, no offense taken. I think the 'look' of speed/power gave me some advantage (the nose lifting is soooo cool!), and the fact that I have an abnormaly heavy right foot.. People see a car like my old Z (and it looks damn good at night!) and figure I won't 'DRIVE' the thing, cause hey.. its a clasic, resotred, whatever... .. heh..I bought/built this thing to have fun, and I plan on getting all the fun I can out of it! Drive it like ya stole it. On a side note, I saw 125 MPH tonite for the first time out on the highway. Two guys came by me a good 30 mph faster then me (I was cruisin in the slow lane enjoying the summer night) in a VW vr6 Passat, and checked out the Z, stared, ect. My passenger says "wow! you see those guys lookin at you man?!?" I say "Yup. Time to show off. :)" I put it too the rug, caught and passed them at 110 and kept going. I heard a faint 'woohoo!!' as I ziped by. Took it to 120, held it for a few mins, then saw the temp climbing.. backed down to 75 and kept cruisin. Fun stuf! waynekarnes
cool, as you say ... it's all in the image. my 79, back in 81, took a ride from san jose to cottage grove oregon. at 126 mph the right rear tire would start bouncing, took it to around 135, but the tire was hopping and taking the zx with it. cruised up 5 at 125 for about 45 minutes. that was such a great car for long distance trips. on the way back, got a ticket, in fortuna, clocked me at 112, wrote me at 72. officer was a car guy, had been thinking about buying a zx ( remember, it was only 2 years old then ). he crawled all the zx, sat in it, checked out the stereo, adjusted the mirrors. if i wasn't getting a ticket on the shoulder of hiway 101, might have been a good time.
