Oil Pan Removal on a ZXT is now an official PAIN IN THE Azzz

Recommended Posts

Well I got home all motivated after talking to Afshin this afternoon and I decided what the heck I will remove the tranny and SHAZAM.....I would have an oil pan in my hands in no time - WRONG!

First I removed the shifter

Second I removed the drive shaft.....get lots of tranny oil in my hair and down my neck in the process...YUM!

Third I removed the entire exhaust from the downpipe all the way to the cat.

Fourth loosen and remove all the tranny bolts

Fifth remove the tranny X-Member

Sixth STILL can't get the oil pan out because the dang flex plate, clutch and flywheel is in the way.

Seventh tranny is loose and moved back a few inches but after wiggling it for about twenty or so minutes it is stuck on the splines and I cannot get it free and I said to hell with it!!! This happened to me before with a toyota tranny and I had to put both feet on either side of the bellhousing and push back (almost like I was in the "giving birth" position) and then low and behold the dang tranny fell on my foot and I could not walk properly for over a week, permanent scar too.

So I am so far into this thing, that I figure I will just remove the tranny tomorrow, FLYWHEEL and CLUTCH and then the oil pan should come free....

Why oh why do the automotive gods not shine down on me??

Next time (hopefully there isn't a next time) I lifting the engine up and dropping the damn x-member.

A pissed off and frustrated - Yasin

seriously thats a pain man

i had a tiny leak so i was like might as well replace my new 280ZX's oil pan gasket, got it all tore apart and found out you have to unbolt the motor mounts and use a cherry picker and get the motor lifted to get it out!

so i cussed and got just in general very pissed for about 2 hours and laid in a big ol puddle of goo and fell asleep

then i just used rtv and made a homemade gasket!

i really need to get it out and put the real gasket on it leaks about 2 quarts a week!

so harsh.

Dropping the crossmember isn't exactly easy either.... well okay I'm speaking from a 240z point of view... my friend and I removed the x member when replacing my rod bearings and piston rings... fuggin PAIN.

I thought a ZXT oil pan came out just like a 240z one does? Just lift the engine a couple inches and it slides right out? Some even say you dont need to lift the engine on a 240 but I've had to the three times that I've done it so far. But I haven't had to lift the engine that high... not even two inches, not enough to have to disconnect anything.

I've removed the oil pan without removing the engine or tranny, or the crossmembers. If you raise the engine off the mounts and inch or two, and drop the pan as far as possible, you can squeeze a hand in to remove the pickup. The the pan will slide out without a whole lot more trouble. This was on a 280Z though, not sure if it was a turbo engine - the bottom ends are the same, pan and pickup-wise aren't they?

The surrounding sheetmetal is closer. That's what makes it harder. I've never had to remove on while in the car and don't envy anyone who has to.

The x-member on the 280zx sits closer to the engine, so you can't get enough clearance. So I guess either x member needs to be dropped or tranny taken out. This is such an unsatisfying and pain in the a$$ job(can almost hear Yasin cursing in the background). Well yasin I hope is start going a little smoother for the next part. Keep us posted

I've done this twice on my 280zxt without removing the engine, tranny, or dropping the crossmember.

With the car in the air, I first removed the nuts on the engine mounts and then used a screw jack and a block of wood on the bottom of the timing chain cover just behind the crank pulley and lifted the motor and tranny as much as possible (several inches, make sure your hood is open). Second, loosen the cross member nuts as much as possible leaving them on so that the crossmember will drop a little (you may have to us a pry bar for this). Then, you can remove the pan.

ZXTMan - Wow thanks for the replyand the idea....I am definately going to try that tomorrow (got home too late today). Funny you mention that, as I was thinking (as I was under the car), if the front of the engine was high enough, that could probably creat enough room to get that damn pan off.

Afshin - Yup....that was me you heard curing a few thousand miles away.

Okay cross your fingers and toes for me guys, and hopefully when I jump back on tomorrow evening to report in I will have an Oil Pan in my hands!

Best regards and many thanks - Yasin
