I have found a 98 LS1/T56 combo for sale with 40K miles. The guy wants $2500 for the whole thing. I was told in another post that I should go with a 2001 and newer LS1, but should I pass up such a great price on the 98??

If it's in good shape you should go for it. The 98 had perimeter bolts on the valve covers instead of center bolts, a different computer, but it had a larger cam then the 2000 and up, and it has the 28 lb injectors. Lots of folks go with the 98's. Like the previous post mentioned, adding the LS6 intake would even things out (250 - 350 bucks).

Oh yea, the exhaust manifolds were a little different on the 98's also.

P.S. if you can do a compression check it sould be in the 175 PSI ballpark.

Jake, Typically the 98 version is down about 5HP. Log onto any of the various corvette or Fbody sites and check their parts forsale or do a search on ebay for LS6 or Z06 intakes.

I bought my complete upper induction from Gene at Karshop in Tampa! Check him at http://www.geneskarshop.com/ I think I paid about $450 for the complete upper induction, including the intake, TB, Injectors, regulator, Rails, bypass tubes, and all accessories related to the induction.

Honestly, the differences are SO small, that there's no reason to hesitate - that is an outstanding price for the pair - If you don't jump at this, PLEASE let ME know! ;)

Let's put some numbers down. My LS1 is out of a '98 Camaro. It has three modifications from bone stock, the ECU has been edited to 2001-2002 parameters, it has a K&N intake, and it had the Sanderson 1 1/2" primary block hugger headers into a single 2 1/2" exhaust. It dyno'd at 311 RWHP & 326 LBFT of torque. I've since improved the exhaust since then but have not put it back on the dyno. Even still, that puts flywheel HP up around 365 from a stock motor. With the Z06 intake and a better valve train it could easily make 400 HP.

Again though, if you have a choice, I'd still go with the '01 or '02 motor, especially if you can get one with both the Z06 intake and block. It doesn't give you mcuh more to start but it has more potential for the given dollar invested later.
