On Friday, August 27, the California Legislature approved a bill known as A.B. 2683. This bill would repeal the state`s current pro-hobbyist emissions-test exemption for vehicles 30 years old and older. It includes amendments that do not protect car collectors and is being opposed by SEMA and the major car organizations in California. This bill would require: * All vehicles with post-1975 model year insured as collector cars (driven only to parades and exhibitions), and at least 35-years old to continue in the Smog Check program for the life of the vehicle. * Revisions to the Smog Check testing regimen for these qualifying vehicles, including a tailpipe test, functional inspection of the fuel cap, and a visual inspection for fuel leaks. The vehicle would also be forced to comply with the exhaust emissions standards for the vehicle`s class and model year as prescribed by California regulators. CONTACT YOUR GOVERNOR TODAY! Despite assurances from the bill`s sponsors that a good faith effort would be made to address hobbyist concerns, this bill continues to betray the trust of the collector car community. Here`s how: * HIGH COST: This bill could be far costlier and even more burdensome to vehicle collectors. * ARBITRARY GUIDELINES: Regulators could set emissions standards to any level that suits their purposes in order to ensure inspection failures. * UNLIMITED POWERS: Nothing in this bill would stop regulators from bringing 1975 and older vehicles back into the Smog Check program at a later date. STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS! Again, we urge you contact the Governor`s office at the address or fax number listed above. Guest plainswolf Posted September 2, 2004 Share Posted September 2, 2004 I leve in Nebraska, and I also sent in an email, noting of course of my location, and because the rest of the country seems to follow California's way when it comes to emssions satndards. I was actually very nice and used reason to state my opposition. But all in all, sounds to me like certain legislators ought to be more concerned with cleaning up their own worthless pieces of legislation and butchered bills before they try to tackle something more important. Davis, that says as long as he was gov. he would veto any bill that changed the smog law as currently written. he was a car guy. let's see if arnold will do the same ... ohh and no more votes for leiber or what ever her name is !!! get her behind out of office !!!! remember so california goes on smog laws so does most of the nation and the world. "Schwarzenegger, who promised a year ago this week while campaigning for governor that he would be a ''green'' Republican if elected, rebuffed the lobbying of ''Tonight Show'' host Jay Leno and signed a controversial bill to require that cars 1976 and newer be permanently required to get the biennial smog checks. I hate driving down the road behind some smoke belching POS. At some point old cars need to be held to some sort of standard. The way I see it pre 75 cars did'nt have much for emis controls and therefor need not be required to be smoged to keep emissions down. As the years go by the number of 30+ year old cars is increasing not to mention the total number of cars on the road. Now don't get me wrong I don't like big brother either I was the first one to post news of the rolling smog repeal, but at some point don't we need to make sure that the cars with emmision controls on them don't become smog belching pieces of s#%t????????? This kind of political maneuvering squashes a lot of 'little' people like me who count on the law being there for them. The reason the law changed in the first place is that it was unreasonable to begin with--it got 'old'. So, since he wants to go back to the stone age and be unreasonable about a perfectlt legitimate change in the law, he can go back to making movies and not be my governor anymore. Dump Arnold. I'm not sure if getting Historical Vehicle plates will help me any, but I have to look into that. Also, this just further my resolves to move to Texas where you don't have to put up with half of the crap we do here I want my guns back. I want me car back. I want less politics! Which is more important? I agree with the above post. Sooner or later, something has to be done about polluting cars. Don't get me wrong, I have a 74 Z that I hope will never see a smog check, but the problem isn't the Z community, the problem is all the older cars that haven't been tuned up in 25 years that are still being driven on a daily basis. Someone has to take these POS' off the road...and the only way to do it is to legislate on it.
