Zerrari GTO
I am in the process of welding in sub-frame connectors on my 280Z and it looks as though where they tie into the rear sub-frame will block the path of the rear sway-bar. I am using Pete Paraska's plans illustrated on his website. I realize he has a 240Z. Can anyone advise? Thanks!
Dan Juday
That's pretty much the deal. Turns out the best place to attach the sub frame connectors is right in the path of the sway bar. You can run without one or get one of the rear mount types. I've seen ones that come with new vertical supports (the pieces that connect the rear "A" arm pivots and rear diff crossmember to the unibody). The new vertical supports have extra "ears" with holes to bolt the sway bar clamps to. Sorry I don't have any names, or links, or pics. Maybe someone else can help. Zerrari GTO
Thanks Dan. Now I can get on with the welding and quit scratching my noggin!
BillZ260
I wrapped mine around the front of the subframe channell since I had to cut out the floors anyway. I don't have my rear sway bar installed yet but there is enough clearance. Mine are based off of Pete's as well..
Zerrari GTO
Thanks for the tip Bill, my floors have been removed so that may be an option. By the way, how do you like your spring/strut combo? That is the setup I have been leaning towards (with sectioned front strut tubes) and it would be helpful to get some feedback. deMideon
I put in pretty large subframe connectors and am just bolting my sway bar through the sub frame connectors. It's the most solid part of my car now! I am using the energy, standard sway bar mounts to do it. Very easy to put together. Let me know if ya want pictures! BillZ260
By the way, how do you like your spring/strut combo? Well, my car is on jackstands now with no drivetrain... so?? It sits nice but the rear may need to come down a bit more, but I really won't know untill everything is together...
Zerrari GTO
Joe, Pictures would really be helpful. Please post them here or email me directly as soon as you can. Thanks!
deMideon
Sure! When I go out to finish installing the sway bar today I'll make sure I take the camara with me!

MikeK280z
Demidion, did you weld a nut inside the suare tube for the bolt? You stated it was very easy; due to the change in mounting point, did this effect attachment of the ends of the sway bar? Any modification necessary? Zerrari GTO
Thanks for the picture Joe. I second Mike's question. Did you weld nuts inside the SFC's or run the bolts all the way through and put a washer/nut on from inside the car? Also, does positioning the sway-bar in this way mess with the geometry of the bar? Thanks again.
JMortensen
Why can't you 280 guys use the rear mounted 240 bars? I seem to recall that there is something attached to the uprights in back of the diff, but I don't remember what it is. If it could be moved... well there's your answer. If you could use the rear mounted bar I think that would be a lot easier than what you've got there. It's hard to be sure from the picture, but demidion's bar looks like it would bind on compression (just based on the picture).
deMideon
I checked through full susp movement and it does clear!
74_5.0L_Z
My subframe ties in right where the original sway bay attached. Fortunately, I have an after market rear mount style sway bar (which I Don't use). My experience is that these cars handle better without a rear sway bay. They get out of the corner better if you tune rear roll stiffness with springs.
Zerrari GTO
I've heard from a few sources that Z's handle better w/out a rear sway-bar. That would be the easiest fix I've had so far on this project! By the way, what kind of fuel tank are you using-looks like a nice set-up. The mufflers look close...any concerns? datsunlover
AAAHHHH!!!!! Ok um.. trust me on this, a 240 rear mount bar is NOT a 'bolt on' to a 280z. I tried it, and ended up roasting my slip yoke boots on the drive axles, and messing up the drivers side shaft pretty good.. It would seem that the 240's had longer 'uprights' behind the diff.. or maybe it was just a diffrent mustache bar.. either way, it doesnt have enough clearance back there in a 280z, and will cause... issues. FWIW, I'm running w/o a rear sway bar (aftermarket front bar.. BIG one..) and I find it has a little more body roll, but does seam to pull out of corners better..
