MYRON
Hey guys, And everyone is laughing at me... It's the "happy" dance.... I SCORED a 98 LS1 TA.. for 1800.00 bones.... It is an automatic so that will have to tradded off... It has 60K miles and runs great... Lady that owned it let her 17 yr old kid drive it ONCE in the rain... DOH! the body looks like it went through a pinball machine and there is not a single good panel or window but with a hot battery it fired right up, good oil pressure and it goes into gear and seems to shift fine... I plan on keeping all the essentials for the Z other than the tranny... I am going to try to offload that as soon as I get it pulled... The axle will go to the chassis shop and get cut down to fit... the LS1 will sit on my stand until it is ready to go in.. I am probabaly going to order an Fbody SC or turbo kit for it... I cant have less HP than my original V8 car so I am shooting for at least 500 HP..... Myron

Mine only has 40k on it, but sheesh.... guess the prices have dropped a bit after almost 3 years!!! NICE FIND! Oh.. you might want to look into a corvette SC system if you decide to go with a blower. The F-body ones are a lot bulkier and would probably require a new hood depending on which system you go with. Now.. a turbo setup.... THAT would be sweet, and you'd easily hit that 500 mark. Good luck whichever route you choose, I can't wait to see it come alive! We'll have to get together sometime and compare (provided I have my engine modded by then ) -Vann
JMortensen
That TA has a 7.5 diff in it, right??? I'd say forget about the 7.5 inch rear axle and get something decent under there like a Moser GM 12 bolt or a Ford 8.8 or 9". That 7.5 is a hunk o crap and all the money you'll put into it to get it narrowed could be used to buy a custom diff. The Moser 12 bolt is a good rear axle with 9" housing ends and bolt in axles (no more c-clips) and you can get 33 or 35 spline axles. Whatever length you want, I think the Moser axles come double drilled with Ford and Chevy bolt patterns. Ford 9" has pinion angle issues, but I think there are a few successful installations here. The 8.8 would be similar to the 12 bolt but I haven't seen any bolt in axle upgrades (I'm sure they're out there though). Congrats on the engine/tranny! That is a sweet deal. MYRON
Jim, I am not sure about the axle.. I know of some guys running pretty decent power through them with no problems in heavy Fbody cars.. I guess I figured more HP and alot less weight that the axle strength would not be an issue... My main concern was to get the motor before anyone else did... I do plan on getting rid of the automatic tranny... My last V8Z had a 464HP/ TH350 and stock R200 BAD MIX!!!! JMortensen
Well I'm only warning you because I used to work for Randy's R&P and used to sell LOTS of diff parts to F body guys who had broken their 7.5's. 27 spline axles, ring gear SMALLER than an R200. I think the R200 might be a better bet than the 7.5. Don't get confused by "10 bolt" either. There is the smaller one 7.5 or 7.625 used in the Camaro and S10, and the larger one 8.5 or 8.6 used in the Caprice and trucks. The bigger one is a lot stronger, but still has c-clip axles. The only thing worse than c-clip axles are c-clip eliminators BTW. Just check it out before they start narrowing it. Do a little searching on the web for Camaro axles and see what kind of stuff you find.
MYRON
Thanks for the heads up!.. I will keep searching around try to decide the best course of action... Last thing I wanna do is bust axles like I did in my 77'! Myron

MYRON
Watch out Hickl, I'm coming after you!... Tim, I am already thinking of creative powder coating for this thing.... I am trying to arrange a place to store it until I can get down there and strip it... Jeff, you got a big garage right???.. I am really looking forward to finally making forward progress with this thing... BTW: does JTR have mounts for the LS1 yet? Myron
HICKL
I'll store it for you for a small fee payable in powder coatings! You better hurry, my sleeper is gaining hp every month you waste. With the new heads, it is beggin for a nasty cam. Is the motor in Austin or Houston? Hickl
MYRON
Jeff, Its the whole car! If it was in Austin, I woudlnt need a place to store it. I think I have the storage thing worked out though... Now I just gotta get a trailor and a few wheels so I can get it moved... I am already looking at SC's and possible Turbos for it... Lots of pros and cons going either way... Myron
HICKL
Let me know if you need some help, I have access to a low-boy trailer that I have hauled quite a few cars on. The car could stay at my house for short term but I wouldn't want it to be there for 6 months or anything like that. I'm off this weekend if you are coming down. So are you going with Johns Cars LS-1 kit or are you gonna make up the motor mounts yourself? Here is a link to Johns Cars just in case. http://www.brokenkitty.com/zcar/zcar.htm
Sparky
Hey MYRON, glad to hear that your making some progress, and basically stealing a car! thatsahellofa great deal you got! -S
MYRON
Hey Sparky, Yeah, its good to be back!... Did you make good use out of those parts yu got from me?... Sumo.. The car looks like it went through a pinball machine so the body is totally hosed.. He just need to get out from under it quick so he could fix his car... Looks like Johns Cars has some LS1 hardware... I will probably just buy what he has instead of fabbing up my own stuff... Myron
MYRON
Hey Guys, A little update!.. It took most of the weekend of shuffeling around cars, but I got my 98 donor picked up!... Talk about a beater! Man this car looked a little like Elliot Sadlers M&M's car after one of his now famous "flip and tumbles"!!!... Literally the only exterior part of the car that could be re-used is the left tail light and the passenger window!... It was FULL of water because the T-Tops were gone, The door skins were seperating from the door frames, The doors woudlnt close.. Man it was rough.. BUT... stuck a battery on it, fired right up and I drove it onto the trailer.... I am still undecided about the tranny though.... I want a stick for the fun factor, but I am also gonna drive this car daily.... Myron
