Supercharging with n42 head

The question is has anyone done this? I know that this may not be the cheapest way but I want to keep this head and the L-6 and the V8 conversion is not possible (car must stay nissan). I've heard that knocking is a problem? Here we have 98E pump gas :D, but we also pay for it...So the gas ain't a problem. Please tell me if you have done something like this.

You should have no problems. I have run a turbo on the N42 to 21# myslef, and many of the Supercharger guys from way back ran them fine simply because P90 and P79 heads were not available.

As long as your compression ratio is manageable, it is nothing different than any other head. At worst you have to install a 1mm head gasket to drop your compression a point...

 

Ignition and fuel control is far more important than compression at the start, unless you are going to stratospheric boost pressures unintercoolled.

 

Does anybody have alink to L Burkholder's Supercharged L28 from the Ontario, Canada ZCC? That car has been running for a long time, 12 to 17# on an N42 if I recall correctly...

BernardD has a buddy with a supercharged ZX. It's a sweet setup but I believe that he is using a n/a version of the P90head/F45block. I found the link to some pics he posted a while back but looks like the pics are no longer on the server? :(

I'm sure you can do it with proper fuel control and a intercooler as you have similar compression to the setup above. However the P90 is supposed to be a more advanced head with better combustion chamber design, which helps avoid detonation. You said you want to keep a Nissan L6, any chance of finding a cheap later model L28 in Finland?

Laverne Burkhart's car has a Jim Cook unit on it, I don't think that the kit is available anymore. It's a beautiful car, and Laverne and his brother Ed have put a lot of time in it. It was also a very very expensive build. There are many turbo cars in the club that are quicker and were cheaper to build. The problem is with that supercharger, there is no way to intercool the intake charge, as the supercharger is mounted to the manifold.

 

As for the N42 - no problem. Lots of turbo cars run N42. As long as the compression is around 8.0 - 8.5:1, there shouldn't be a problem.

The JCR kit is available once again. Sandy Cook came to the Group Z meeting last year when they were ready to re-roll it out. It is now separate components: intake and supercharger with drive, and Fuel Control. The kit for the S/C was the price the complete unit sold for before: $3400.

 

Sandy realized with so many EFI systems out there, the "hard parts" were in more demand, with the customer using what system THEY were familiar with.

 

I remember Seeing Ed and Lavern at the Atlanta Convetion, then again in Denver, and once again in Thousand Islands! That car keeps going and going and going---and getting more powerful and impressive to boot! I remember his comment at Denver "We ran the 12psi pulley for this trip, we DO have to drive 3300 miles back home!" On the back straight at the Denver Stapelton Airport, the Z32TT's were hitting their rev-limiter hard at 155, and then along came Lavern whizzing by---you could hear that S/C whining away from the spectator area while he passed them on that straight!

Impressive to say the least!

True, turbo cars are easier to build but I wish the pics that I posted earlier were working so you could see the simplicity of the design. It's really quite ingenious. The car I am refering to DOES run a intercooler. All he did was use a supercharger from a GM V6 and mount it on the OPPOSITE side of the engine. He made a collector flange to direct the pressurized air past the rad support into the intercooler. The intercooler runs across to the left side and to the throttle-body. He is using the STOCK intake manifold. The supercharger gets air from a filter mounted where the battery used to be (battery re-located to the hatch) He also had to relocate the alternator to where the AC compressor would be. We both went to the race track on the same day (first time for both of us) His times were near identical to mine with a 8.3CR, 6psi and a Megasquirt with 260cc injectors. Traction was a problem for both of us.

I often have pondered what all the whining about "snow" and "cold weather and salt" was on the many forums...

I would absolutely LOVE the opportunity to take the car off the road and rip into it for 6 months straight.

 

You guys don't know what kind of hell we live in in SoCal. Always driving the cars, events this weekend, that weekend, ride to the beach, run to the mountians. Drive drive drive drive... it's incessant, and HELL I tell you!

 

I would LOVE to tear into it and not HAVE to drive it every weekend...

Funny.. I'd never heard of this 'kit' for the s/c and a few months back I was thinking of it.. all on my own I mean. heh.. First thing I thought of was a 3.8 tbird S/C on the passenger side of the engine..

Thanks! So I was concerned for nothing. For the fuel delivering I'm going to use the Megasquirt. And the aim is not up in the sky, just to have "enough" power :D !

 

GrayZee asking about cheap z; well Nissan brought about (not for sure) couple hundred Z cars here (none turboZ; do it yourself!).... So they are not very cheap, but sometimes you can find one (but always with rust).

 

And it's true that here in North winters are "quality time" for the cars and when the spring comes it's time to enjoy the ride!!!

25psi on an N42 in my 3.1L L6

 

But, the P90 is going to be completed in the next several months. I'm looking for 30+psi and the N42, even heavily worked, is not the right head for that.

What no A/C!! lol Thats cool that alternator is where the a/c goes and the power stearing pump is where the allt. was.......a picture says 1000 words:icon45:
