Looking at buying a Samsung 50" tv and was wondering if anyone here has one? I have read that some guys are having a lag effect on the video when used with a receiver and surround speakers apposed to the tv speakers. BB has the tv and receiver purchaces @ 30 months no interest. My time has come as will pics of my "excuse" for not working on the Z. The new living room.

My wife and I have the 46". I did notice the delay you mention, but I thought it was a function of my crappy DVD player. Sometimes it's noticeable, other times not. The only other problem I have is that you can sometimes get trails when you have a really jerky action scene going on. My sis-in-law says she can see the trails more often than I can, her eyeballs must have a higher refresh rate than mine. Supposedly plasma doesn't have that problem, but it was about $2000 more for a good name brand plasma TV.

I like the TV though, and the price was unbeatable. We got it on sale at BB with 18 months no interest, they gave us about $300 in rebates and BB gift cards, which we used to buy a bunch of DVDs to watch on the new TV. Worked out pretty good.

One other thing about the new TVs is that they really don't have good stands for these yet. We looked at all of the TV stands and hated them, so we went to a furniture store and found a "sofa table" which sits behind a couch. I'm not much for furniture shopping, so I had never heard of this piece of furniture before, but it fits the TV perfectly. It came with feet that we removed to bring it down about 4", but at that height it's just about perfect. I just drilled a bunch of holes so that I could hook up the stereo and DVD wires and that was it. Worked out perfect.

It seems like most of the delay issues can be worked out by settings on the TV if you want to try this.

Press Mute+1+8+2+power to get into the service mode,

select and enter option SERVICE MODE

Select SOUND DELAY and play with that number.

I am looking forward to getting the TV,as far as TV stands go, I just completed a built in ET center in my living room. I started a post with pics 3-4 months ago but I saw that my Photo bucket pics have disapeared. I am going to compile some before and after stuff once I get this all set up. I am ready!

Thanks for the input. Oh have you had alot of issues with the bulb or the color wheel noise?

I don't have the Samsung but my Marantz projector http://www.marantz.com/hifi/america/main.html uses the same Texas Instuments Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology.

I have a 104" screen and the picture is awesome! The colors are right on and it is super bright. The bulb is a bit expensive though @ $280 and has to be changed every 2000 hrs. BTW, the projector keeps track of the hours and warns you but if you don't change the bulb it shuts itself off.

The technolgy behind DLP is amazing - it's all done with mirrors - 1.3 MILLION of them! http://www.dlp.com/default.asp?bhcp=1

Wow, thanks for the tip, I'll try that!

I'm not much of a technofile, so I honestly don't know what color wheel "noise" is. I've only had the TV for ~6 months, so I've had no problems with the bulb at all. I agree with SpeedRacer, the picture is REALLY good, with the exception of the trails I described before.

When my wife and I decided to replace our 27" TV I went in SWEARING that I wouldn't get sucked into one of the new plasma or LCD TVs. Needless to say, after staring at the old style next to the HD for about 5 minutes, my TV budget sextupled and I walked away stunned at how good they've gotten, and how I fought tooth and nail for a year to get that much money to put into the Z, but we decided on that TV in under a week!!! :) Priorities! We did shop around at all the local stores, and we looked at plasma, LCD projection, DLP, everything we could find really. Of the TVs we looked at that Samsung was very clearly the best deal.

Now if only there were more HD channels...

Hey I did remember something else for you. If you turn the TV volume up over about 30 my wife can hear a high pitched whine. I can't hear it at all, it's out of my frequency range, but she can hear it and it bugs her. We have a separate volume control on the digital cable tuner, so we just crank that up and then we don't have to turn the TV volume up that high. We have the DVD player hooked up through an audio tuner so that is never an issue.

We just sent back a Mitsubishi 52" DLP because of the fan noise. Our living room has a tile floor and I removed the acoustic crap from the ceiling so the room is very "bright." The fan noise (especially the cooling fan over the bulb) in that room was louder then the refridgerator in the kitchen (54db vs. 52db). And, yes, I have a sound meter. I use it for measuring race exhausts I build for customers that autocross in San Diego and race at Laguna Seca.

We changed our TV to a Mitsubishi 50" plasma.

Well, Iv'e had the samsung for a week now and the ONLY time you can hear the colorwheel is when everything in the house is OFF, including the heater. It sounds like a itty bitty blow dryer and is not noticable, for now. The component 1 inputs are not working right now so I'll have to call about that but everything else is wonderful!

JMort, when you got to the set up screen, did you do it with the TV on or off? I couldn't get mine to come on?

Jeff, i got it open box for a hair higher than you quoted me but since i bought a new receiver as well, i got them at 30 months 0%, and that is what I was looking for, financing. Once I get the surround all tuned up you will have to come critique my 'self install' and let me know how I did. We finished up the Sub (adire 12" shiva in a ported box, w/ parts express 250W amp), It RoooooooHaaaaaCKS! and I'll give you those head light buckets! :)

Turn the TV off, then do the mute, 1, 8, 2, power and it will come on in the setup mode. When you originally posted mute+1+8+2+power I was trying to hit all those buttons at the same time. Not necessary. Just hit the right succession and you'll get it.

One thing I did notice is that mine likes to be on setting one for the TV and setting 3 for the DVD, which is kind of annoying, but worse things could happen.

This is a great thread as I have been shopping around for replacing my big screen. the negatives of the DLP types seem to be fan noise and DLP replacement bulb every two years. The design reminded me of the old type slide projectors. The picture looked real nice. I am upgrading but will stick with an LCD thin and flat-silent and lasts for 60,000 hours with no maintenance. ( dont know if pic degrades though, does anyone?) Anyway that's the current plan.

Jmortensen..thanks for the great write-up. This kind of solves the mystery. Plasma it is. DLP is really not cheaper over time, and projector technology is prone to failure. However I know that Mitsubitshi apparently is going to DLP for their rear projection screen offerings and they usually have great quality.

I am just going to throw out one more thought to ponder..

HD Plasma has the same resolution as the DLP being discussed, so that being said they should have the same res capabilities. I think if you go to a reputable store (not a box mover) you can look at Plasma and DLP together with the same signal at the same time. I know that is how we demo them, anyone who has the option of selling a customer a Plasma over a DLP is a silly man if he tells you the DLP is better ( Duh it's called commision ).. However it is just as good for HD and Standard Def signals as a Plasma.

Ok now think about this. Plasma is a phos. based tech, DLP uses a color wheel and a lamp. A Plasma has what is called a halflife which means basically after so many hrs the phos fades like a glow stick from the fair (be it much slower) usually like 30,000-50,000 hrs. Now when your DLP needs a new bulb you just replace it and you are back to the Picture that you had the day you brought it home. So 5 years from now when you have that plasma on your fav HD channel and you are thinking that it just isn't what it use to be, You are right.

I am trying to stay neutral as to the which is better argument as I make my living answering questions just like this and explaining it in both layman's terms and in depth for the tweeks out there. I have the option to buy both of the ones mentioned here at mfg cost and I chose one over the other based on the ability to produce a very high quality picture, then price is the second thing I look at.

Just my 2 cents..

Jeff
