beren
I just got a L28 from a 79 280zx to swap into my Black Pearl. The engine in my 280 is not original and needs a rebuild, so I picked up this engine for $300, and will rebuild the other engine as time permits. Here's my issue. When we pulled the exhaust manifold off the "new" engine to replace the intake/exhaust manifold gasket, the lining of cylinder #3's exhaust port was white! (The pictures only show cylinders 2-5) Pic 1 Pic 2 Does this indicate that this cylinder was running lean? What's going on here? My brother-in-law was concerned when he saw it and said he wouldn't trust the engine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...
Guest Cronic
I've never seen that before... it's possible it could've been starved for fuel and running lean... I'd do a compression test for sure, and maybe replace that injector.
SHO-Z
From the looks of it the exhaust valve on that cylinder is either badly burnt or bent. Do a comperssion test on the engine.

Jolane
One more for the burnt coolant thought...I would pull the head and check things out personally... Joshua
frank280zx
+ it is the 'evil' exhaust liner, i have seen this on blownheadgaskets ( or leaking) before, or it could be really lean like i once saw on a Turbo exhasutmanifold (that xandar had) it was also allmost platinum white. On teh other hand, that engine is not the Original engine for a 79, those to my knowledge only came with the n42/n42 combo, this is a n47 witch is 81/82 and not that common ( at least not the longest used) But i would do a compression test, or better take teh head of, check it out, and maybe swap for a n42 ( since the liners are havely debated) or rebuilt the head. cause this looks like this cant have been running without doing some damge
